Do you know which area you want to work in?

Published

I'm just wondering how many people have already decided on which area you want to work in. Why? Do you already have experience there? Have you already done clinical there?

As for me, I am planning on working either as a cardiac RN or an ED RN. I LOVED the cardiac floor at our hospital. I still get the excitement of the ED, but with some stability. But, I've worked as a EMT for a year and a half, and love the ED. I am an adrenalin junkie!!! I think my decision will have to do with what hospital I end up working at. -Andrea

Never, ever, LTC....absolutely could never do it. No med/surg, either..we also worked on a neuro floor this year, and it wasnt as bad as I thought, but I want something with a little more of a challenge....

As of right now, I'm hoping to get into L&D, for someday, after my kids are in school, I want to go on to become a CNM. That's my long term goal right now, and I am also thinking about school nursing(I know, two totally unrelated fields, but I'm not sure how crazy I am about hospital nursing)...we go to LTC in the summer, but only for six weeks, so its not too bad....

I have a year and a half to make up my mind, but I'm really leaning toward L&D....

I want to work on an oncology unit. At a cancer clinic. I would also work on an oncology palliative ward. I can hardly wait! Getting closer and closer!

L & D. It's what I've ALWAYS wanted to do. Ever since high school and that was a long time ago. lol. L & D was my first clinical rotation and I also have my preceptorship in L & D this semester. Very excited!!

I had wanted to be in NICU ever since I was in LPN school 15 years ago. Then I had a preemie and spend 3 months there not by my choice, I had changed my mine. It was pretty traumatic for me. But now that my preemie is 4 years old, I think I would be a good NICU nurse. I would be able to talk to the parents, and have an idea of what they are feeling and going through.

Having done psych crisis work, I know I love psych or ED.

I am interested in learning more through school and rotations to see what else I like.

I have worked as a volunteer in ortho, OR, school nurses office, indigent clinic (general medicine), cardiovascular, neurology and have enjoyed all of the experiences and greatly admire those I worked w/.

I would like to work in a VA or underserved area...

Forgot to mention I also love working w/ the elderly...

Or hospice care...

So much to do, so little time...

After I finish my 2 year work commitment in the hospital, I was thinking of maybe going into home health. I definately don't want to work in peds or labor and delivery.

NICU. I had two preemies and that's what really pushed me into going back to school. I'm going for my NNP and can't wait to start school in the fall.

How totally coincidental that I happened upon this thread! I was just about to post something similar. The problem is, as I draw closer to graduation and starting on my RN I am becoming more and more concerned about where I want to specialize. First I thought OB, which I still like. However, I minored in criminal justice in college and my heart is in forensics. Then of course, I love computers in healthcare, I love technology and research-so I think informatics. I also have a desire to do psychiatric nursing. I am so confused, I don't know which direction to go. I really love the forensics idea, I would love to be a SANE-A and I almost feel as though that may be my calling, but I hear work is hard to come by and the pay isn't great. I dunno. I guess I'll peruse this thread until it is no longer updated and see what everyone else is considering...

My ultimate goal is to be a CRNA, but I want to work in the STICU or OR until then. I currently work in the ED as an ER-Tech and thought I would want to do that until I began working in one. I just want to have about 2-3 patients and that's it. I do understand that I will have to do some sort of Med/surg rotation about 6 mos.-1 year just to get that foundation.

Rn2b204 :) :) :)

I think I will start out in pediatrics, or obstetrics

I have no idea! But there's still time.. right? :chuckle
