Do I have to re-take Chemistry? Need advice please

Published

Hello everyone!

I took 3 semesters of Chemistry as an undergrad. Fundamental Chemistry, Organic Chem 1 & 2. I took these classes in Spring '97, Fall '97 and Spring '98. By the time that I apply to BSN programs it will be more than 10 years since I took these classes. Some of the schools that I'm applying to won't accept science courses that were taken 10 years ago.

I really really do not want to take Chemistry again (I feel that I already suffered enough ).

One of the schools told me that I could write a letter asking to get this waived or something like that. I don't know what to write. Is there something that I can do (like take a challenge test, and if so..how do I go about doing that) or tell them that would convince these schools to take accept my chem courses??

Thank you all, would really appreciate some advice.

I took my Chemistry in 1979 and 1980. I didn't retake the course and I am doing fine. Unless the school requires it, I don't think I would have retaken it. The other side of that coin.....if you retake it, you could get an easy "A"!

if the school you're looking at allows waivers then that's no big deal since you qualify. i have a bachelor's degree and i've had to request a couple of waivers to community college prereqs for prenursing courses. simply email them what you just posted above and attach a copy of your transcript to verify that you took the coursework. you can also walk in to the campus advising center and do this in person for faster results. you don't have to pitch to them - if this is a state funded university - they are judged on their pass rates so they try to do what they can to make sure that people have the necessary foundation to handle courses.

If any of the schools tell you to take the CLEP test, make sure you ask them how that will be recorded on your record. My community college (not where I'm going to NS) allows you to CLEP out, but then they record a "C" as your "grade"!!!!

The nursing programs that I have been interested in had time requirements for the other science courses, not chemistry. If you are only considering a program that has this requirement for chemistry, then you will have to get the waiver or retake the classes. Maybe you should concentrate more on finding programs that do not require recent chemistry classes. Most are interested in micro, anat, and phys being recent. I can see why you wouldn't want to waste three semesters worth of hard work.

I took Chem back in 1997 and ended up getting a C or something (hated Chem in HS!) So I ended up retaking a HS level Chem class (8 weeks) at the adult ed. school around here. It was worth it once I got into A&P I because we first went over the Chem related stuff and it did help.

In Kansas, if it has been 5 years since you have taken the course, you must take it again.

Sigh. At my school Chemistry expires after only 5 years. I barely made it through the first time, and am looking at having to retake it again in the spring. However, had I been ready to apply this semester they would have granted me a waiver.

Your Chem credits are old, however you have more advanced courses then perhaps the school requires. So if I were you I would request the waiver. The worst that would happen is they would say no.

Otherwise just know that you are not alone in Chem hell.

Good luck!

you think chem is hard...try microbiology!
