Do I have a chance at getting accepted?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm hoping to start a career in nursing. I initally wanted to go to medical school, but after working in a hospital I know nursing is for me. However, I didn't start off too well in school. In 2008, I started college (planning to go to med school) but flunked out after getting pregnant. I took a few years off and went back in the fall of 2011, but with working full time, I too flunked out. I am planning to start my pre-req's for nursing this upcoming fall semester at a community college. The classes I took at the other schools were geared towards medical school and won't be used as pre-req's for nursing school. Do I still have a chance at nursing school if I do very well in my pre-req's?

Depends, but most likely you still have a chance. What is your current GPA and what classes did you flunk out of?

At the other colleges, i flunked out of biology and chemistry. However, when I was in high school, I took biology at the community college I'm planning on going to so that's already out of the way. I know my ability in the sciences and I know I can pass them. Its just my past few attempts at school were overshadowed by other things which won't happen again.

Your chances might differ. Some schools look at your goal, but supposedly the goal for you nursing pre read so maybe they won't care as much if you do phenomenally well in the nursing pre requisites. Just make sure you do not overdo these and make As and you should be okay. I myself was curious how to go about my classes. I will ultimately decide after I take anatomy this summer how much I think I can handle at a time. Is rather take it slow and get in than take too mug and never get into a school. Good luck with your studies!

It depends if they count your cumulative GPA. However, there are many ways to raise a GPA. A lot of other people I know at school have 3.X GPA but they take a lot of PE/easy classes like art, because it counts toward our cumulative. At my university, they look at cumulative GPA as well as science GPA. I think you have a chance. :) Good luck, let us know how it goes!

If you're looking to raise your GPA somehow, particularly your science GPA, you could retake biology and chemistry. These won't count as prerequisites for your community college nursing program, but they will raise your overall science GPA by replacing the F grades. I think your first step needs to be setting up an appointment with a nursing advisor, not just a general advisor for the college, but someone in the nursing program. Ask them about the concerns you have and get their opinion on what steps to take.

Well personnally I would start from scratch at a community college. Don't list the old school, and it can't be held against you. Test out of whatever you can an apply to the nursing program there.

unquestionably, if you can raise your gpa it would make you out stand against the competition. undoubtedly, it seems that you're ready to give it a go this time around. therefore, after you speak to a nursing adviser which in turn can give you pointers regarding what pre-reqs you need to get out of the way first, make sure you keep a relationship with this person during the program. lastly, i have no doubt that you'll succeed getting into the program and excelling. wishing you the very best in all of your future endeavors...aloha~

Yes. Just prepare yourself to work and study hard. You need to do well in these classes for nursing school.

My story of life similar to yours. Except I didn't get pregnant or worked full-time. I just simply flunked a lot of my classes. I was also going for pre med even though I hated physics and chemistry and math. So finally I decided nursing was for me but I was terrified because at that point from screwing up so many times my GPA was a 2.1. I now have a 3.0 and am a sophomore in nursing school. It can be done :)

I would say you still have a chance! I was in the same boat as you, flunked out 2 times for various reasons. I became very ill one semester and it was too late to drop so I failed. The second time I was forced to relocate, again too late into the semester to drop. I started my nursing preques with a .75 gpa!! I now have a 3.5 cumulative, and a 4.0 for nursing prereqs :) I have applied to 3 schools for August of 2012 and have been told that "without making guarantees, because it's too early, I will most likely be accepted" to a BSN program, and just had my interview last Wednesday for a ADN program. So, although, I'm not certain what my future holds, I'd say with some hard work you have a chance. Don't give up!

P.S. It really depends on if your school looks soley at nursing prereq GPA or if they look at the cumulative, so make sure and do some research on that!:)
