I only feel valued by the patients that I care for. Not my co-workers, not the physicians, especially not the administration. It's only those who count on me to keep them clean, comfortable and secure, those are the ones who value me. Maybe we should teach the new nurses that the patients are those who can give us the most reward for our labor.

Not at all the management on the floor I work for is constantly changing policies, threatening with corrective action, and totally unflexible. For example we have a nurse on a floor who does a great job, always a teamplayer, and keeps us laughing during the night. He was rewarded for such a good job with a 49 cent raise after working for over 5 years. Another nurse when unable to work overtime was told I'll remember that when your evaluation comes. When asked for a day off to observe a religious ceremony the manager replied you are going to have to find another time to do things with your church. When the manager came in orignally she was changing times until we wrote to HR and let them know we were going to an attorney regarding this matter. The changing of the time stopped however we never saw any of the money they docked us. I am looking for a new job and would advise anyone NOT to take a job at this South Florida "Magnet" Hospital

Yes. Mostly by my patients. I still think that my co-workers are back stabbing and waiting for drama from me or from other people to give them something to talk about. It's like a soap opera on my floor. I'm not close with anyone on my floor, except one girl and she's leaving for the same reason. She doesn't like our floor or the abuse.

My patients are awesome and tell me how much they appreciate me all the time. If it weren't them, I'd probably still be looking to leave. :wink2:

By my clients and the other nurses or yes I am valued. By the management I have an definate NNNOOO!!! Someone stated earlier if we weren't happy, get another job...well I only have 5 years until retirement, don't want to lose all that state benifits by leaving and finding another job.

I applied for a nurse manager position last month and there were three people that applied. I have 16 years experience and 2+ years management experience and they told me that I couldn't have the nurse management position because right now "They needed me out there working and being positive about management," the same place that won't give me a management position and which one of them said at a staff meeting, "If you don't like it here you can go somewhere else, like nurses just fall off the cherry patch and they can be found everywhere...nurses are a dime a dozen you know.....

Anytime they have needed someone to help them out and do a "special project," who do they ask??? I am getting so tired of that and then when I am working on something that I need to do, they never have time for me to work on it. I can't quit but I have decided that when they ask me for something extra I will tell them that I am too busy.

I have got myself into the union and it will be a great way to get back at my bosses when they screw up like they do most of the time. The next time that they screw up with one of my staff....i am going to be there...with bells on...

No; currently 20 years in my position, working as a temporary nurse manager, at the top of my pay scale as staff nurse & not recieving any extra recognition.....just more work & headaches.

I went to a job interview earlier this week, where they are paying thier new grad RN's a starting wage of $33 an hour to work in Med-Surg. I have almost 15 years experience as a nurse and applied for a job in an outpatient clinic. The interviewer became upset with me, becuase I requested a salary of $36 per hour ( which is the average salary of nurses in my area). The interviewer told me they couldn't possibly pay me that much and wanted me to take a wage lower than what a new grad makes.

Obviously, 15 years of experience is worth nothing.

No :sniff: as so many others I don't feel valued, but as I became a nurse as a second career late in life I have to stay because I have to think about when I retire. Hospital nursing (med/surg) sucks but there is no $$ in office nursing in Central NY, and bottom line as much as I enjoy pts and nursing its all about the paycheck. It is only going to get worse as nursing schools aren't preparing new grads for the real world, and young people don't seem to have much desire to work....work hard anyway.

I work for a state facility so we have all the govenment bs to deal with, and a year ago they got rid of our CEO and last week it was the CNO. The new CEO has a reputation of going in and "restructuring" everything and then moving on...Phillip S. Schaengold any one ever heard of him. I'm really concerned because I'd like to get my 10 years in with the state before I move on but I don't know what is going to happen next. Our CNO was a nurses nurse and she looked out for us.

What is going to happen to healthcare if we all feel so negative about our jobs.

For the first ten years out of nursing school, I did feel valued by patients, their family members/visitors, by the staff I worked with, and for the most part by the Nurse Manager of whatever unit I happened to be working on at any given time.

During my five year medical hiatus from nursing, all I could think about was how much I missed working as a nurse, so when the time was right, I re-entered nursing.

The first year back in nursing made me question "what happened to nursing as I once knew it to be". After working at several different hospitals in four different states since 2003, I can truly say that nursing needs a serious overhaul........as do hospitals that have for far too long allowed their nursing staff to be abused by management, patients, patient family members/visitors, and doctors.

As much as I enjoyed patient care, I do NOT enjoy being abused and unappreciated wherever I might work.
