Do you bring your laptop to class/lecture?

how many of you use your laptop, in nursing school, like it's goin' out of style ? :monkeydance:

i should start a nursing program in the next 3-6 months, and i'm debating over whether i should use my laptop or not. i will obviously bring a binder and writing utensils..but i'm wondering if i can keep more information in my laptop. i type 65+/wpm, so i'm thinking i may be able to get more information down. plus, it seems very organized.

what do you think? how did you go about taking notes and learning in your classes?

What happens if you decided to write on normal paper? LOL. Only the pen/record function would work then I assume?

Yes, only the recording function would work. You could still write, of course, but none of that writing would be stored on your pen, nor would you be able to just tap and play from what you wrote.

When I used it in my meeting, I was writing my notes in the special notebook, and recording at the same time, but when it came time for me to sign some papers, I continued recording and went on ahead and signed those papers. When finished, I just went back to taking notes on the special paper. Of course, the signature will not be digitally recorded within the pen. That's the cool thing about this pen!

I love what I am reading about the pen but I am a little confused about how it looses link after the 1-8 go in to archives. Why would the writing and the recording break the link? Would the recording be lost?

Can the pen also keep track of all the different paper options including all the notebooks, journal and flip notes at all once?

So far I am not even in nursing program but only taking prerequsits. I have all the gadgets except the tablet. Instead I have notbook. Last semester the recorder really came in handy for micro. Had to listen to the lecture about 10 times just understand the little bugs...

THose are some really good questions! You know, I actually wondered that, myself, about if I just had one of each notebook, would they be able to hold them all? I am assuming that as long as you have ONLY one of each type of notebook, then you would be able to keep all of them without archiving andy of them. Now, depending on which type of pen you have, it only records up to 200 hours of audio (I have the 2 GB), so I'm assuming that over time, you will be forced to delete some of the audio on the pen, only. This only affects the "tap and play" feature ONLY on the pen. You would still be able to "click" and play on the computer and still listen to the audio as many times as you want (as long as you haven't archived them).

Now, about archiving, I was unable to find out if you still have the audio or not. From what I read, it stated that you only lose the "link" between the writing and the audio. So, to me, that states that you must still have both the audio and the notes written, but only just lost the "link". I haven't had to archive anything (I don't plan on it), so I am unsure, personally.

I think those minor things are too minor to make this pen anything less than awesome!

How long did you have it? I'm thinking about getting it for my AP. I blank out in class room and retain 20% but if I am listening at home I am more relaxed and can concentrate on what the instructors are saying. Maybe I have ADD

I have the pen only for almost two months, but it has already proven to me how awesome this thing is! I wouldn't try to diagnose yourself, but I think a lot of people tend to blank out during class. It's just the fact that you are not moving around, sitting at the same seat for such a long time, doing the same thing. It's only natural to sort of blank out or daze off at least one point during lecture. That's the great thing about this... You can listen to it later and "fill in the blanks" on your notes when you have the capability to move around and such, at home. Just make sure you sit relatively close to the teacher, so you can get the best recording quality.

You're welcome. I'm just like you... A research fanatic!!! Gotta research everything (how do you think I know so much about this little gadget?).

The sound will work on the computer anytime you put the pen on its cradle. As long as you don't archive the notebooks, you will always be able to play back the lectures whenever you click on the text you wrote (or just click play anytime). It's if you delete it off of the pen, you won't be able to "tap and play" from the notebook paper. You'll just have to go to yoru computer for that.

Yes, it has the basic translation dictionary and scientific calculator, too. It's pretty cool. I think you should just go out and purchase it! You'll figure it all out! Not everything is going to fit the needs of every person because everyone has their different needs.

First, the notebooks come in sets of either 1-4 or 5-8. The only time you would need to archive the notebooks is if you plan on using another #1 notebook (after going through all eight notebooks). THEN, once you archive those notebooks, you will lose that "link". But that's an awful lot of notebooks, so by then, you may not even need that "link" anymore. You'll definitely have your notes still, and I'm assuming the audio portion, too, just not the "link" in which you can "tap and play". I use about a quarter of a notebook in one whole class... so it would take a lot of notebooks for me by the time I'm done with nursing school. By the time I finish through all eight of the notebooks series, I don't think I would need the "link" anymore. I can always play the audio if I feel I need it, and of course go back and review my handwritten notes for the NCLEX exam. At least I'll know that all of my notes are safely on my computer and I don't have to worry about misplacing my notebooks.

Yes, you can print your own paper, but ONLY if you have the special printer type (I forget which printer it requires), but it only replaces the notebooks. I'd rather, personally, just purchase the notebooks then print out all this paper and figure out how to bind it. Maybe in the future, they will make more notebooks or printing easier.

I decided to finally take a moment and look up what exactly happens when you archive your notebooks. According the the Livescribe manual, it states.... Looks like you WILL NOT LOSE THE "LINK" within the computer program when you archive them. Only on the pen, will you lose that "link". Read below

When you have finished using a Livescribe dot paper product, you should archive it in Livescribe™ Desktop. Archiving a Livescribe dot paper product does the following:



frees up storage space on your Pulse™smartpen



enables you to use another Livescribe dot paper product that has the same dot pattern as the one you archived. Livescribe dot paper products with the same dot pattern have the same name.



moves your notes and audio for a Livescribe dot paper product into an Archived Notebooks folder in the Library Pane of the Navigation Window. This distinguishes Livescribe dot paper products you are currently using from those you have archived. Your notes and audio remain interactive in Livescribe Desktop, just like non-archived Livescribe dot paper products.



deletes your notes (ink data) and audio from your Pulse™ smartpen. Because of this, your Pulse™ smartpen will no longer interact with the physical Livescribe™ dot paper product that you archived. That is, when you tap the notes in your archived physical notebook, they will not play back any audio.

I hope that answers those questions (it sure clarified things up for me and makes it even better knowing that it is still interactive on my computer, so I can ALWAYS click and play whenever needed... SWEET!).
