Do you bring your laptop to class/lecture?

how many of you use your laptop, in nursing school, like it's goin' out of style ? :monkeydance:

i should start a nursing program in the next 3-6 months, and i'm debating over whether i should use my laptop or not. i will obviously bring a binder and writing utensils..but i'm wondering if i can keep more information in my laptop. i type 65+/wpm, so i'm thinking i may be able to get more information down. plus, it seems very organized.

what do you think? how did you go about taking notes and learning in your classes?

:smokin:

Yup thats exactly what I was talking about... thanks for the review.

YES! Use the laptop! I was the only one in my class who had one and I loved how much easier my note taking was with it. My notes were always neat & organized, and I could go back & cut & paste pictures into my notes. At one point, someone in my class asked me if she could borrow my notes from a class that she missed, and I was just able to email her the notes as a Word document. That slowly evolved into the creation of a distribution list Outlook where I would send my typed notes to any (& mostly all) of my classmates who wanted them. The noise was not a problem at all--just find a seat near an outlet! The best tip I got was to take the tape recorder with me to class & record class as well. Re-listening to the lecture while following along with my notes (we did not have Power Points until the last 2 semesters) was an excellent study tool for me. GOOD LUCK! I miss my IBM Thinkpad--it died right after nursing school...RIP

I have a problem. I have no money to buy a labtop:typing. Does anyone know if there's a company that lends them out?? Last semester my instructor would hand out outlines. It was horrible because it was not the exact outline that she used on the powerpoint. When I would take notes on the outlines I failed my exams. When I copied the outline on powerpoint using pen & paper & added a few additional notes I passed the exams. The problem is that she talks SUPER fast!

Starzburst thanks for this information! I have a question does the PP have to be a file or can you scan it and then import it. In the past our professors give us a physical copy instead of a file. Thanks

Sounds like you learn best by actually writing out your notes! I would suggest the livescribe Pulse Pen in your case. I would try to come up with the money for that AND the lectures are recorded, so you can play back the lecture and not worry about missing a word! I don't think a laptop would work in your individual case. Just my opinion.

Yea, I think definitely the pulse pen would work. The problem is that she passes through the slides too quickly. Each time she goes on to the next slide u can hear the entire class moan, groan, & grrr at her.:angthts: During 1st semester of RN school I did well w/ writing additional notes in my outlines. Does the pulse pen record even if I am not writing w/ it.

Oh yes! The pulse pen can be used as just a recorder if you really want to use it for that. It's great because you can be writing what notes you can catch and just let it continue recording (even if she's moving too fast). Later, when you go to review, just play back the recording or just TAP where you missed something and the pen will automatically jump to that part of the lecture so you can "fill in the blanks". YOu don't have to worry about having to listen to the WHOLE lecture (recorded) as you can jump around in the recording.

I've been using it in my classes and absolutely LOVE it. I'm surprised at how much it picks up! I sit clear across the room and it still picks up the instructors voice! Plus, within the computer program for the pen, you can increase the volume up to 200%! I love it!

There is now this thing called Google Wave which is a multi-user system online so many people can be logged onto one "wave" and can edit things simultaneously while everyone else is editing. I can't wait till they publish it for all google users by the time I start nursing school. It would be a great tool to take notes with fellow classmates if there was wifi around while you're in the same class in case you miss something. Imagine the possibilities!

for some reason the laptop thing doesnt work for me

You might want to consider the idea that most people remember nearly 75% of info they listen to and then write by hand, but usually less than 2% of info they listen to and then type.

I use my laptop all the time to write papers, care plans, class projects etc, but never notes.

I use a digital voice recorder to capture each lecture but listen to it only if I cannot keep up my notes during the lecture.

Yes, but some laptops let you write (as opposed to type) and record (with the audio recording integrated with the hand written notes, so each line you write has a play button next to it, that will start the recording 5 secs before you wrote that line).

So, that stat doesn't necessarily rule out laptops from being effective in the classroom.
