Do your ancillary depts annoy you (security, transport)?

Published

Just asking because we have one security guard who is alarmingly obese, he can walk a few steps before leaning against the wall huffing and catching his breath. I'm concerned he'll code some day. but he will go between departments on rounds and just walk up to the secretary, lean over her counter to within a foot from her face, huff and talk and puff and talk.

Our transporters are younger and slimmer but do the same thing, parking their gurneys or wheelchairs and rounding on the nurses to sit next to them while they're working and gab. I'm sure the guys are single and trying to get these nurses interested, but they're obviously not and just as obviously too nice to say anything.

Our Director has emailed the heads of each department to no avail. So my question: do any of you have the same kind of ancillary departments? Time bandits?

Nope they don't annoy me one bit. In fact, I love them because they make my job a little but easier!

I have to admit that they do annoy me at times, but I'm just as sure that nurses annoy them at times too, so we're even. I just keep in mind that we're all here to do a job and they're just trying to get theirs done. Now, if its a situation of them just sitting around goofing off, I will jokingly say something to them and they almost always get the hint that they need to get back to work. There was a few times that I had to notify their supervisors though. I can't really point fingers at them alone, though, because I've seen many a nurse sitting around gabbing or surfing the net, too.

We had a transporter whose time was more valuable than anybody else's. Brought a patient back from xray and because nobody rushed to the room immediately to take the patient off the stretcher for her, she pushed the blue button. Yep, called herself a code! That wasn't what got her fired though. Two days later she forced her way into a celebrity patient's room for an autograph. Got herself hauled out of there and pinned against the wall by patient's 2 security guards.

Sorry about no.2 above. Hit enter accidentally when GB scored!!

As a night shifter having any ancillary staff is amazing. Although I'll admit I get annoyed when we call security to help with an out of control patient and they walk into the room and just stare at the 4 nurses practically laying on top of the patient.

Most of our ancillary staff rocks! There are bad apples in every department, but on the whole there is very little interdepartmental friction that I'm aware of.

I get sort of annoyed with our case managers. They have their own office, but instead they like to sit at our station (where we only have four chairs/computers to sit and chart).

They sit there and gab on and on about their weight watchers diet and what they ate for dinner. One is a smoker and hacks and coughs all over the station as her long fake nails "tap tap tap" on the keyboard.

Our security officer annoys me. We have to park in no man's land and he always says we can ask for an escort out to our cars, but he is so creepy, it would be someone like him I would need an escort for.

Our transporters are wonderful. However there was one who asked for my phone number to get some help with his nursing program. To get him away from me I just gave him my number and left it at that. A few days later I got pictures of him naked- I am sure he even went as far as to um how do I say prepare for the picture he took. I told management and turns out he sent other nurses pictures like that- he wasn't even in a nursing program- ewww!

The only department I've ever really gotten a problem from was dietary. Some of the workers(not all..) in that department are lazy, and just don't care.

I'm not asking them to pass trays or feed residents but, pretend to care.

What really gets my goat is when we call for something for a resident, they just put it on the nurses station and not tell us what it is or who its for. Once I was I was having a night from hell and I snapped at the guy, he put it on the desk, and walked away I said to him, "Um excuse me, come back here.. who is this for?"

At the hospital I used to work at there was a transporter there who was awesome! I called him "Flash" cause he was so fast! I never had to wait more than 5 minutes for him. And for scheduled AM head CTs, he was the only one ever on time. He was strong and could handle running with a big critical care bed around corners without banging the walls or running me over! Yeah, Flash rocked.
