DNP programs- University of South Alabama vs University of Alabama Huntsville

Published

Does anyone have any information of University of South alabama's DNP program or University of Alabama Huntsville? I'm in the process of applying for both but I wanted to see if anyone was a current DNP student at either of these places and had any opinions on how the programs were. Thanks!

Keep in mind that USA requires that some of your clinical hours be from a PMHNP. This can be a challenge where there are relatively few PMHNP's like Florida (and those who are here work for MD's who may or may not let them precept students). One of my fellow clinical students who goes to USA may have to quit the program because she is struggling to find a preceptor who is a PMHNP with at least a years experience. Other schools like the University of Southern Indiana (and I believe Frontier) will let you use psychiatrists for all of your hours.

Thats really great to hear about the program and its even better to hear you are getting back on it! Are there are shorter options than 16 semesters?

Thanks again. I am finishing the application now as the cut-off is next week.

I will be starting the 11 semester option come August and I am doing the MSN-DNP route.

Is that because you are pursuing a new specialty?

I would be applying for the FNP program as my MSN has the concentration in FNP.

Are there only 2 semesters per year? So it is a 5 year program?

Sorry for all the questions but I really appreciate the quick responses.

USA's FNP MSN program is a little over 2 years.

Thank you. Yes there are shorter options to chose from. When you get accepted the College of Nursing will email you several courses of study to choose from and it maps out what classes you will take in certain semesters. I think the 9 semester is the shortest. Also, I forgot to mention is that they have specialty add on courses you can do, such as nurse educator ( which I am doing) and think cardiology and lipidology.

I'm currently in the MSN to DNP program at USA. I'm loving it so far.

I'm currently in the process of applying for the DNP prom. Can you share your experience with the program thus far? How are the classes aligned throughout the semester? How may are required each semester? TIA

I was really looking forward to pursuing a degree through South alabama and I applied before the cutoff of July 2019.

Honestly whether or not I get accepted it does not matter too much at this point as I was accepted at Touro University. I was notified I was accepted rather shortly after applying which Is nice.

Although it would be cool to attend Alabama, the Touro program is only 12 months and will be completed by November 2020.

Good luck and let me know how it goes

Yes, I was also interested in Touro but got shot down due to residency requirements. I live in VA and they cannot teach VA students. So, I have to look elsewhere for a DNP prgm. My top choices right now are Univ. of South AL,Univ. of AL Huntsville and Chatham Univ. (most expensive, but shortest).

Sent you a DM.

I recently finished my MSN-FNP and am looking into various programs to continue on for my DNP. What has your experience been like at USA? Did you also do your MSN online? Is the coursework/load about the same? I am currently filling out my paperwork and would love any tips or nuggets of knowledge for the application. How long is the total program? I see there are a couple completions options on their site. Thanks~

Hello,

I literally am in my 3rd week so far, a lot of papers and forum discussions. It is too early to tell. Good luck!

Hello CANNUNURSE999,

Thank you for your response. I am interested in starting a DNP program with USA. Do we have to do a project at the end of the program? Do we have to present the project in the school? or with our preceptor?

Thanks for your response.
