I was looking through my Doenges nursing dx book, and there is a NANDA dx of Disturbed Energy Field as evidenced by objective things like waves, spikes, color changes, or holes in the pt energy flow. What the heck?! :icon_roll I wrote it in as a possible dx on my final care plan, my teacher was cracking up.
There is undoubtedly an electromagnetic field around each neuron because current is flowing... wherever current is flowing there is a related field. Now given the very, very low amperage, the fields are very weak... given that their power dissipates with the square of the distance, they're probably approaching zero within just a few microns from the neuron itself.Beyond that, I'm with you.
I don't deny that humans emit or reflect various electromagnetic energy wavelengths. The most obvious being visible light.
OK - so I guess you'll have to put me in the crackpot group.I was a 100% if-we-can't-measure-it-it-doesn't-exist type of nurse myself... until I actually experienced therapeutic touch as an alternative therapy for back pain that had not responded to traditional methods. I felt the very real effects - underwent multiple sessions after being dragged (kicking and screaming) into the first one. It worked. I am a convert - and now absolutely believe that the human body doesn't end with our skin.
I was curious enough to learn more about it - and had the opportunity to experience just a touch (pun intended) of what it feels like to apply this technique. I didn't follow through to complete the training, but I respect and value the nurses who have done so.
It's always easy to disparage things we don't understand - cultures, religious beliefs, technology, mind-body connections... - I think I will continue to maintain an open mind.
I dont think you are nuts. There actually is some science behind this. I vaguely remember it from NS. Something about the pain and pleasure receptors in the brain are the same ones. If you are touching a patient, the pleasureable sensation of the warmth of your hand displaces the pain sensation. Keeps the brain from feeling it for the moment you are touching them not permanently. Over time this can probably help relieve stress which would also help. I believe these things can be helpful if you are open to them. Some people definitely over do it though. I don't know anything about energy fields or chakras.

I believe that you are describing the gate control theory of pain management.
I don't doubt that patients experience a feeling of well-being when under the care and attention of a TT practitioner.
Nothing like the undivided attention of, and hands-on contact of a professional to make a patient feel better. Sort of like the days when staffing allows us to do complete physical assessments of our patients, practice primary nursing in which we address their every physical and psycho-social need and then top it off with a back rub. I'd like to compare that to these completely unvalidated treatment modalities in a study.
Actually the electron field is around the electrons and the atom as a whole.Neurons don't carry any charge.
Around the electrons because they are spinning and around the atom because the electrons are flying around the atom......
Do you mean neutrons don't carry a charge? Because we know neurons transmit electrical impulses.

I meant neutrons. I lost the T somewhere!
And actually, they are trying to say that the eMF is causing supernatural events....
Wrong...
The EMF's are more likely to be causing perfectly explainable SCIENTIFIC conditions.

no doubt that humans emit different electromagnetic fields. however thats not whats decribed in the NANDA diagnosis. at all.
I'm going to agree with hypocaffeine......if there are "plenty of people with positive results" then there should be no problem doing controlled double blind studies to validate the results. If it is a genuine phenomenon then it would manifest itself.
Of course, the results don't speak to cause, which could be a whole host of things, including 1) legitimate energy field manipulation (whatever that means) or 2) placebo effect
Oh. no doubt, I agree with hypo.
I have little tolerance for mumbo jumbo like this.
If there is a manipulatable energy field then it would be able to be quantified AND tested. Period...
The fact that scientists can CREATE anti-matter and no one can detect these 'energy fields' goes to show how silly they really are.
I mean come on. Anti-matter? Yet no chakras are visible...
Tells us a lot.
