Discrimination?

No it is not discrimination..They prefered a certain type of person...Some places dont hire older workers or people of different nationalities..Just let it go..You would not want to work there anyway in stating it has to be a female RN..

I think it's clearly discriminatory and I'm just surprised they gave you that honest answer upfront.

It frankly caught me by suprise also. The good news was that it kept me from getting tied up and was available when a previous ER co-worker offered a position at a refinery in the OCC Health arena at a signigicantly higher salary.

It did burn me though about the previous job, and I had to do some venting.

Hey H60, there's no question that is discrimination. I'm an administrative resident in healthcare and I've spent significant time in Human Resources dealing with legal aspects. According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), when interviewing you cannot even ask questions that deal with gender, age, race, country of origin, etc., only questions that deal with specifically with the job (i.e. can you lift 30 lbs, can you work weekends). Obviously, discrimination happens, and if the MD wants a female, s/he is going to get one, but that office could get in a bunch of trouble if someone took the time to file a complaint. They shouldn't be admitting to looking for a female.

it was discrimination, employers are supposed to employ people if they are right for the job, and not on the basis of race,gender,sex orientation,creed etc. Obviously he was right for the job so yes it was discrimination

It clearly is discriminatory. However, the fact remains that neither the Courts, the governmental agcencies through the executive branch, nor the legislature at all levels of government have done anything to address the pervasive problem of reverse discrimination in either tradtionally male or female employment.

It can and cannot be discrimination. There are certain jobs where the HR department can hire based on sex. I have a BS in HR Management and this stuff has become second nature. For example, a female only gym. It is not discrimination to hire only women to work in the locker rooms cleaning up after everyone. There are guidelines to each job, and for this specific example with the woman's gym, the job would require this employee to constantly upkeep the locker room. Now most women would not want a male in their locker room picking up towels and cleaning up spills. Due to the nature of the job description, an HR Dept can specify females only. The same logic may be the reasonong behind wanting to hire a female. Like I said, there is a lot that you have to consider.

I agree. I was once told that I would have been hired if I wasn't pregnant at the time (this was for a receptionist job)! If'd I'd only known way back then that THAT was discrimination. Look into it my friend.

I would be bothered if i walked into a hospital and wanted to apply for a job, only to be told that we do not hire male nurses, this is just how we choose people. They can have a preference on what kind of training they want in a individual to have, how much experience, education etc. these are things people can help, but being male isn't, and not being hired because you are male in a hospital is discrimination. If the hospitals around your area are doing this then i would move far away.

I am yet to fathom the rationale behind this argument:

Discrimination based on race (for example: "We only hire Hispanics") is clearly considered negetive (and "bad").

Discrimination based on gender (for example: "We only hire males") is considered positive/acceptable?

Pray tell why?
