Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

My guess is that they’re predicting that the virus will slow down by the end of April, as we transition into the hotter temps of the Summer. The latest august..

Hi one day_nursepoundcake

You were definitely right about not being able to keep an annual visit in order to obtain the immunizations And bloodwork needed for this schools semester. It just happened to me as well. I was called by my actual primary care physician and told do not come in whatsoever and that she can’t help me. she can’t tell me anything past this because she honestly didn’t have any indication of when things would go back to normal. She also stated how she had hoped I would get to reschedule the visit in August. When I explained the purpose for this visit was for school she kept reiterating “she just didn’t know “. My primary care doctor then asked me how soon did I need the visit and immunization for and when I told her in June she responded with well I don’t foresee you getting a visit anytime soon for this matter. she kept reiterating how things were out of her hands and that she MUST CANCEL this upcoming visit that I had. I explained that I understood wished her well and hung up the phone.
There are a lot more cases than when we last discussed this matter. This is definitely coming to be a critical time and is very scary Thr uncertainty. My heart goes out to everyone right now.

Stay safe!!

Yikes! But this all makes sense given that NYC hospitals don't even have enough masks/PPE to keep healthcare workers safe right now -- which is a crime really. DeBlasio has likened the situation to a "war zone" so I'm trying to prepare myself for my nursing education being a low priority in this current climate.

Meanwhile, if any local folks are getting antsy -- Phillips School of Nursing at Mount Sinai just sent out an email that they are extending their application deadline for the fall ABSN program to May (I'm planning to stick with Columbia, but I did apply there as well).

I'm planning to email my primary care doctor soon and see what her thoughts are on getting any appointments/vaccinations in the near future (I've only heard from the practice as a whole, but not sure about her take). Will let you know if I hear anything interesting.

WOW! Yeah you’re absolutely right! Also heard some hospitals didn’t care for their employees to wear masks with shields for concerns of scaring patients.

So it seems like our school plans to have us start on time although my primary care didn’t sound promising. I hope I have enough time to get everything in order because I know we need to have certain vaccines or bloodwork spaced a month apart. However the schools sounds very confident we will be there and able to tackle anything like this come next year. I love the positive vibes and the positive message they’re sending.

Yes please keep me posted and I will do the same for you. I really appreciate it! Thanks so much!

Hi everyone!
like someone else mentioned earlier in the thread, I’m also struggling to get my vaccinations and physician completed. I’m very worried about losing my spot in the program due to it. On the paperwork, it even says that some of the vaccinations/titers may take about 2 months to be read/completed.

I’ve emailed Columbia but no response yet. I’m just hoping there will be accommodations for this. ?

honestly, I don’t think you’ll lose your spot because of this. as long as you do your due diligence. but I’m pretty sure they’ll expect a lot of delays. we’re all on the same boat with the same concerns.

I am almost certain that you will not lose your spot over this. From my understanding, we need to be assigned our Columbia ID before we are able to enter in our health info/physical exam info/immunization records. Considering we do not even have access to the Web Portal or have a Columbia ID yet, everything is likely to be pushed back. I personally haven't even tried to schedule my physical yet because of everything that is going on.

Thank you @Gmilitar and @J_future_PNP-PC. I guess I’m just concerned because of their email saying they planned to move forward with having orientation in May and class starting June 1st. I’m not so sure that’s possible at all anymore so I hope they’ll send an email update soon

yeah. I mean everything right now is pretty much tentative. Hopefully everything goes back to normal by then. Hospitals and clinics are understaffed and they’re providing medical care to pts by triage. I’m pretty sure our medical/physical exam will be the last one on the list LOL. CU will def understand if our medical stuff are submitted late. I’m more curious about how our class is gonna be, whether online or in person. A lot of schools have transitioned their classes to online up until august. But, for columbia, I’m getting the vibe that they expect for everything to be back to normal by the start date, late May, of our program.

During my MDE year, there were students still getting immunizations and requirements completed during the first week of classes. So I’m sure you’ll get plenty of flexibility considering the circumstances, but also, don’t worry too much because student health can help you once you’re there.

Hi All- when/where is the paperwork you received regarding vaccinations? I never received anything of that nature... any way you could post a picture or screen grab? Thanks so much!
