Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

Any of you fellow waitlisters get any news? NYC is pretty much shut down right now so I’d assume most of the staff isn’t in the office if no one has heard anything

Haven't heard anything- Only places that I know are still open are grocery stores and pharmacies. Everything else is closed cause of the lockdown.

The most recent messages from the school seem to indicate they are struggling to just deal with the situation for current students -- especially since all clinicals have just been cancelled.

It is super frustrating to be in a limbo, but NYC is also in a situation where hospital staff don't even have adequate PPE, so definitely crisis level and challenges no one has faced before.

Hmmm I’m not sure. I work at a pharmacy and everything is still open just limiting hours. I work in several locations in nyc and everything is still open. The only things I have seen fully closed are gyms and movie theaters. but as far as food places and other shops they are still open. I haven’t heard anything from CU and during this time I’m in a huge limbo. I don’t even want to reach out in fears that it might be rude and I’m sure they are adjusting to online classes and clinicals. As for us that have been waitlisted I guess our lives are one big question mark right now.

I work in the hospital so I will tell you we are open even the outpatient areas are open too. The school is open also but everyone here at CU are practicing “social distance” so folk are honoring this by rotating staff, meaning one person or two in an office area or space at a time and maybe the next team comes in the following week, we all take turns. What this means is a decrease in staff which means they’re stretched so thin from all calls or emails. I assume once things calm down a bit then they will eventually get to those who are waitlisted. I’m sure accepted students aren’t getting much information at this time either. We are definitely struggling here as like everyone said this is never been dealt with on this level. We are canceling unnecessary surgeries and visits in order to limit patient contact. Physicians are not even going into rooms with patients if they don’t have to tell them anything of concern. Right now telehealth virtual visits are being opted and phone calls if essential.
And now with recent news of healthcare workers having to be tested this is going to be very tricky because we need as many healthcare professionals on top of this but they’re definitely in jeopardy and we don’t want to exhaust all of our hospitals ERs and their workers and so on.

please remain to stay safe everyone sending out positive vibes “this too we shall overcome.”

Thanks for this update from the front lines! Wishing you much safety and health right now. Yes, I'm an accepted MDE student and we have not been getting much info either, except that orientation/June school start are still on -- but things are changing every day. For me, much of the preparatory work that can be done (e.g. physical at doctor) seems kinda on hold at the moment due to circumstances, and I haven't wanted to bug the office right now regarding my student loan app status.

Tuition for the whole mde program is around 115-120k

Thanks! Do you happen to know (or anyone) what the estimated total cost is for the 15 months? Not just the tuition, but for everything? First year is $132K but I don't know about the other 3 months..

Also, is anyone else apprehensive that we will indeed begin in June? I know they sent out an email telling us they anticipated continuing with that time frame, but I'm still not convinced. If anyone else has some insight on this, please share! In the meantime, be safe everyone. ?

Thank you @oneday_nursepoundcake!!

Wait nursepoundcake, so your appt got rescheduled with your primary care physician or no? Honestly, I received the same email saying that we will still start in June and have orientation at the end of May, but I don’t know nor do I feel confident with the way things are going. I’m beginning to wonder how will we even race to make the deadlines for vaccines ? with all that’s going on in the world right now. Hope they will give us an extension, and like @mrisajne states I’m just not convinced either.

Also with all of this social distancing I really wonder what the plan will be for the upcoming mde students who are supposed to have their graduation ? at the end of May 2020.

This is just my opinion (nothing factual).... I’m 99.9% believe the Summer program will start as plan or no later than mid June. There’s no way the Govt will continue to shut things down pass 3-4weeks simply because of the ramifications to the economic. It’s only been approx one week of almost complete shut down and the economic already tanked. You might call me naive or delusional but I guarantee that govt will lift off most of the bans by mid April because most businesses and ppl in the country will start taking their chances because like everyone else, the bills still gotta be pay.

As for vacinnation/physical clearance - if it comes down to it, Columbia will probably have students go through Columbia university health center.

I used to think the same. but if the fatality rate becomes high enough or if the spread of the virus doesn’t slow down until then, then concerns about the economy will have to come secondary. especially if most working ppl become too ill and unable to work. let’s just hope for the best and help in anyway that we can.

I’m also curious about the clinicals.

Hi @nursepoundcake you can contact the financial aid office regarding your loan application status. I emailed them yesterday and they responded relatively quick. I felt emailing was an easier way to sift through and communicate I almo made sure to just apologize for bombarding them with an email when I’m sure they had other things to focus on but I made sure to title my email as loan app status still pending , and I explained how I wanted to know how go forward.

yes I wonder about this too. just speaking from people in my neighborhood which is low income, people will go to work they do not care about govt shut down. unless jobs are closed down, there is no way. most people dont have the luxury of not going into work and this is very scary bc the virus is really contagious. I am also really worried about the elderly at this point.
