Direct Entry MSN 2020 at Columbia University

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!

Good Luck!

anyone else here , who went to the visiting day, felt like columbia accepted way more students than they usually do?

I think I heard on their Instagram story that there were 250 accepted students at visiting day but I could be wrong ??‍♀️

Does anyone know if we will be drug tested in May? I have a medical card for health issues but worried that I should quit before school begins. Thanks!

This is where I saw it as well. My group was discussing this during visiting day. Some said they might be trying to compensate for ppl who may not accept the offer thats why they accepted more than 200. If this is the case I think its really messed up because they also have ppl on the waitlist.

Definitely is wrong and the fact that they won’t tell those waitlisted what rank they are. I assume they are expecting that not everyone will be able to stomach paying the tuition cost, especially if their accepted to other schools that are a lot cheaper. Hopefully those on the waitlist will be lucky enough to get into other places if not Columbia.
What will this mean for those that aren’t accepted in the DNP already? Will there not be enough space for the students that were not accepted into the DNP once the DNP is completed.

Not sure if I understand your question about the DNP. But ill take a shot at it. I’d say that the DNP and MDE are still two separate programs. Although you can directly enter the DNP program, there are still separate limitations for each program. But from what I hear, not a lot of ppl apply to the DNP program (I think only half of the MDE cohort go directly into the DNP program). In fact, they actually encourage current MDE students to apply and go directly into the DNP program. With that being said, Columbia actually favors MDE graduate applicants over students who received their bachelors degree from another school.

Sorry, I meant to phrase it once the mde student completed the mde portion and they decided they would want to proceed with the DNP, how would that be possible? How could there be any space left for them to pursue the DNP? I raise the question because after discovering that there could in fact, be 250 students accepted and there seems to be such limited slots in each DNP program as was mentioned, hypothetically if all of the mde students wanted to be DNP students then how would there be enough available slots for them? (Keep in mind I’m very aware that not everyone will choose to stay for the DNP but I was just asking because maybe this cohort everyone decides to do exactly that for whatever reason) And to reiterate I thought there was only like a certain number of slots for each program for example, Psych DNP has 20 or 25 slots as does maybe Acute care DNP, then the phd program may only have 10 and so on.

But thank you @Gmilitar for taking a shot at my question even though I made it very confusing!

My understanding is that this is why they strongly recommend that if you have even a passing interest in the DNP, that you apply to both as you can always opt-out of the DNP but it is harder to opt-in, especially if the track that you're interested in is already full. Having said that the DNP is totally separate so there must be some room for those with BSN/Master's Entry degrees from elsewhere to apply to the Columbia DNP and I think they do try to accommodate their own students as best as possible over outside applicants. There is also always a range with the cohort size of MDE and DNP tracks, so my guess is that if they get 4 or 5 stellar applicants and it means there would be 25 Pediatric DNP students instead of 20, they can accommodate, they just can't do 30 or 40 when they only have "space" for 20.

One of the students that I met at visiting day suggested that anyone interested in DNP who hadn't already applied try to get mostly As and Bs in the MDE classes and do well in/make good impressions during clinicals for the best chance at getting one of the remaining spots for the DNP. The faculty definitely made it seem super possible and that the application process is relatively easy and different from what outside applicants will have to do.

See this is my main worry. As someone on the waitlist, not knowing my rank as well as knowing that they over accepted is making me antsy. The only factor that's even giving me hope is that admissions are telling those that called that waitlisters should hear back by tomorrow, while in previous years they said nothing (at least to my knowledge). It gives me hope that at least some people will get off the list so fingers crossed ?

Yes I am on the waist list too. I have been calling them and received no information except that we would be contacted mid March. And finally one woman said March 16. But with the current global crisis who knows anymore? CU hasn’t really been that forthcoming considering it’s not going to kill them to let someone know their rank. It’s literally a guessing game with them at this point and I have to pray for the best !
