Hello Everyone, The applications for June 2020 at Columbia University has now opened. I haven't seen any new threads for this year so I wanted to start one. I am in the process of applying and half way done! References already sent their recommendations!! and an upside to this year is that Columbia University is no longer requiring the GRE. SO I am pretty happy about that!!
Good Luck!
Great question largar
aksea thank you your prompt responses and being very detailed.
would say that from what I’ve heard from my coworkers, none of them learned to start IV’s or do blood draws in school. It’s just not something most nursing schools do anymore. That said, even as a nurse in a hospital, I still don’t draw blood or start IV’s. There are teams who do those things. If your job requires it, they will train you to do it, and they’ll understand that you have no experience. If you are able to do a global integration, you may get that experience at some sites, but not all. So don’t feel like you’re starting out behind anyone. You’ll have the same experience as those around you. By and large, I feel that my education prepared me extremely well for my position as a nurse, and I am thankful for how thorough the education I received at Columbia was.
It’s great to know you received what you paid in referring back to being well prepared in your position. Did you proceed with Columbia’s DNP program or did you stop at the mde? How soon after graduation ? with your mde did it take for you to find a job? Was job search here in nyc or elsewhere ? My apologies if you answered this question already!

Oh heck yeah. Been watching DeBlasio's NYC "state of emergency" press conference and it's reminding me of a lot of issues beyond just illness/overwhelmed hospitals that could complicate things (e.g. economically speaking). Stay well, everyone!

The school is probably prioritizing dealing with their current students right now. I have confidence that they will make an announcement when they are ready. I'm going to give them some space to do what they need to do and wait until closer to June to start worrying.
I Imagine that Columbia will try not to postpone the start date but will continue with distance learning (online classes) - another school I interviewed for said if it gets to the point where students cannot participate in in-person clinicals that we will learn everything via simulation. So potentially small groups in the simulation labs for clinicals and classes from home ??♀️It’s a weird time. Most schools in nyc are transitioning to distance learning right now, including all SUNYs and CUNYs.

That's what I was thinking. Things are pretty bonkers for all big organizations in NYC right now.

Why would they reduce tuition? Are you expecting your professors won’t be lecturing online? Are you expecting they won’t answer your questions and clarify things for you? A zoom/online classroom can also be engaging, and you can sit in your pajamas and participate. Just as it would be in the classroom, it’s up to each student to make the most of it.

R.E.L.A.X. @aksea.....Although there are many uncertainty right now and just have to take it day by day, I do think it's a valid case in regards to online classes (tuition reduction). And you been passive aggressive with your respond to @Aw1992 comment is unnecessary. LOL Just because you preferred online classroom does not necessary mean everyone else does. Most students preferred face to face lecture rather than online. And I'm pretty sure if folks wanted online classes then they would have applied to an online program. I think it's all about the experience. That been said, the situation at hand is beyond all of our control (including Columbia) and we just have to hope for the best.
