oh yeah. just in the nick of time. finished my ceus. all in one fell swoop, one test, one subject/module, all 30 ceus done.
i liked the site i used (taylor college), i think it was set up nicely and actually offered something to learn. i picked the "diagnostic testing" module.
it went so well, i am going to wait until i can start taking my ceus for my renewal two years from now and do it. imagine, two years of knowing you already have it all done. sweet.
i'm so glad i paid to do them all at one time instead of fishing/searching through site after site for free ceus. i've heard horror stories from other nurses who did it that way and it took them multiple days.............all day. me, total time spent was about 4 hrs reading and

I look at ceu's as a way to maintain & increase my knowledge, not as punishment. I do about 30 hours a year. Plus my hospital provides us with free access to spectrum and also requires about 15 hours of mandatory classes (cardiac, cva, trauma). Also need 100 hours to renew my cen, so I'm going at it anyway.
I firmly believe in 1 and/or more of the following:
"knowledge is power"
"my cat's name is mittens"
"the more i learn the less i know"

Although it may seem like a hassle I am so thankful for required CEU's. I have been licensed in a state that does not require any continuing education, and to me that is a bit scary. CE is only for our benefit, things are constantly changing and it only helps our profession as a whole if we are knowledgeable and up to date on current practices. I have found medscape to have really good articles that are relevant to our current practice, and it is a nice resource to have if you find yourself 1 or 2 hours short.
I'm glad you got all your CEU's done in time, but definately check out some classes that maybe your hospital offers, it will only benefit you and your patients.

LOL :)
I had to open this thread...the title caught my eye. Aside from my CEU's, we have mandatory learning plans to complete before they will renew our license. Not fun.

You say tomato...............I say tomatoe, let's just call the whole thing off. lol
I don't see it as "a way to increase my knowledge". I don't see it as a punishment. I see it as............the "non-medical" authorities way of having some say in..........something/anything. Politicians want to look involved in/aware of/passionate about healthcare but...........ha ha, they are not for the most part. They just need to look like it for votes. Soooooo.......part of their "disguise" is to come up with things like CEUs. They mandate learning (you can't mandate learning any more than you can require compassion) and then sign off healthcare as "done" and move on to more important things...........like if their golf swing is better/worse than last year.
Can't think of a single politician that has any place telling me what I need to read up on/study/learn. Can't imagine I ever will. They need to worry about things they can actually initiate change in (read on, the responses below) and learn their place. They have a long way to go before they can tell me anything about my practice.

Actually, said state you mention above is not different than the states that do require CEUs. Google it, go to your BON with the question.........do w/e ever research you please: YOU WILL NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT SUPPORTS MANDATED CEUs AND BETTER PT OUTCOMES. PERIOD.
Why? Like I said, you can't mandate certain things. Its up to the individual to either display/practice said quality or not to. Compassion/caring/willingness to learn can't be mandated. There may be rules in place to attempt to mandate such things (CEUs), but really...................how many nurses really go into it as an opportunity to learn? Here, I'll give you a clue:
Where I am at, there is a loop hole for getting 30 CEUs. You sent, oh. about $15 to a company that sends you a book of about, oh........150pgs...........and you "review" said book. NO TEST. Just an opinion/review CARD (yes, card, not even a whole form, a post card) and you get a cert. for 30 CEUs. Wanna know how many people I know personally that went this route? I lost count months ago........months.
In short, even in places where its mandated............people just drive around it.
Learning/willingness to apply yourself to education can't be mandated. I explore things in my own time as things crop up in my professional life. I continue to add to my knowledge base and try to see how it can improve my practice. I did this before CEUs were mandated. Now, with mandated CEUs in place, I have to waste time and money documenting that I did so. Not the end of the world, but it is a waste.
And the people who didn't care to "expand their knowledge base" before CEUs...........still don't do it, even with the mandate in place.

Right. And that brings us to the next point about CEUs I don't like. I don't know of any hospital that doesn't already have "learning modules" that it makes its nurses do. But, the hitch is: They don't count as CEUs. Why? Cause there is no way to collect a fee on top of the license fee you already pay.............so its no good, even if you are already learning.
So, now the true colors of CEUs are exposed. Since what they are proposing we do is already in place.............why do it? Oh right.............there are fees associated with it..............fines if you don't complete it. Money. Money for the politicians. Oh, I am so surprised, I'm like totally beside myself (valley girl accent). Who ever heard of politicians masquerading around as protectors of the public when really they just want to make money? (sarcasm, in case you didn't get that)

CEUs? Cant remember the last time I did one of those...I think I got a slip at a nursing conference once with those letters on it. I just threw it away though.
They are accepted in every state. Perfect.

And here I thought you were going to tell me that my manager had done us all a favor and resigned.
Ummm, welll.............excuse me Ms. Presumptuous, but you don't know who you are talking to..............do you?
"DeLanaHarvickWannabe, I AM YOUR MANAGER, search your feelings and you'll know it to be true."
All kidding aside, I am your manager and I don't appreciate you coming on here talking about me, as if you were perfect and everything is always my fault. And BTW, while I was at that meeting I heard you and Theresa were talking about me..............................
(pauses a moment)
Hey, your manager is a dude right? If not, disregard the above as a joke. If yes......................hmmmm, you'll have to guess what the truth is.
