Dilemma -- any advice?

Published

Kind of a weird situation and I don't know what to do (if anything). I'm a freshman in a 4-year Nursing program. My roommate is also in the program. The rules are you must pass A&PI (lecture + lab), A&PII (lecture + lab) and Chem (lecture + lab) with at least a C (75) by May of your first year in order to continue on in the program.

Last week in conversation my roommate revealed she had gotten a C- in A&PI lecture.

Let me just say that anyone who does not pass any one science course with the required C is allowed to retake that class to get a higher grade. She chose not to do this. (She claims her advisor never said anything so she doesn't think there's a problem).

Today is course selection. She successfully signed up for all the nursing classes (intro, health assessment, clinical, labs, micro) while at least 2 other girls I know of did NOT get put in.

I feel like 1) the program should have caught her grade slip and either told her to retake or not let her sign up... and 2) I kind of want to bring this to the attention of someone but I don't want to seem like an a** or whiney student.

I'm just very frustrated at this point, because I feel that it is very unfair that she is taking up spots in the classes she technically shouldn't be in.

Any advice??

I kinda am doing something like this. Taking my college algebra before passing the remedial the school says I should have. Don't care, they are charging and holding me up with classes that don't count. I had no problem registering.

Then I don't tell everyone and my brother my business in real life so don't have to worry about someone tattling. Also don't know yet if I passed chem with a 75 which is a pre-req for A&P1 but already register for it. How do you know if you are going to pass to standard when registration is before finals and finals are 40% of your grade.

Hummm.. I'm guessing that you and your roomate are of average college age late teens, early 20's..? In this situation i would mind my own business.., maybe she will slip through the cracks.. or maybe not - fact is she knows she got a c- and she knows she needed a c and she is evidently telling people..??

It is NOT the responsibility of anyone: registar, advisor, financial services, department chairs to make sure "susie" is passing her classes... it is HER resopnsibility to be aware of what is expected and required of her - administration at the college level isn't going to hold any hands and guide you through..

maybe a friendy, - hey you might want to double check on that.. or something..? if you want to be nice. but for her - acting like it's not a big deal, or ignoring it will make it go away..it may, but i'm more than certain will com back to bite her in the a**. - they do have to verify you have completed all the necessasy course work to the state in the end.

You have spoken to your room mate about this and she has decided to do what she is going to do anyway. You should just stay out of it from now on like everyone has suggested. If your friend gets caught up in her choice, she can't say that no one tried to look out for her. If she really bothers you that much with her lazy student behavior, then simply ask the dorm manager for a new room mate.

Hi CourtneyH

Just wondered...but how good a nurse is your room mate? Is she good with patients and does she have a passion for her job? Maybe she just has some problems academically, but really blooms when it comes to client/patient care and that's what has pulled her through. I'm not sure how it works - I'm from the UK, but there must be support in place for those that don't pass what's required first time round and this MUST to be reviewed as you so rightly say....but I can't help but think there must be a reason why she's allowed to continue to carry on. Not sure that this helps - but maybe she needs some help to get through exams and tests...

Just looking on the bright side - what can be a potentially excellent nurse, may not be able to write the perfect essay or pass a test first time. Could you talk this through with her?

Wow! what a great friend/ roomate! Glad ur not my friend! If you want to do the right thing keep YOUR focus on what YOU are doing. They will figure that other stuff out. Nursing school can be challenging enough let alone when someone is trying to sabatoge you. That is a very real situation you may create for yourself by becoming the class rat! Not many people would want to be in your company and rightfully so. Besides karma can be a *****. I promise you that in the future you will find yourself at someone elses mercy at some point. When that time comes hopefully it will be a close friend. One might expect something else from a stranger but a friend!!! Remember where mercy is shown mercy is given. I also wonder what your true motives are.:down::down::down:

I have to admit I'm a little surprised at the "snitches get snitches" responses.

hi rowmi0 ... a little harsh maybe?

Hi rowmi0

For somebody that professes to have 12 years experience in the nursing profession, I find your response infuriating. This is someone that is starting out and does not need that level of criticism. Sorry everyone but let's support each other, eh?

Your absolutely right, my bad. I was writting out of pure emotion rather than my mind. Courtney, I reread what I wrote not sure exactly why it struck such a cord with me. My stuff not yours. I am very sorry that I came off the way I did, we do need to be more supportive of each other and not so willing to attack our own like I feel I just did.

I agree that you have to examine your motives. I know it's difficult not to judge people; we are all human! She definitely won't escape getting her come-uppance if that's what you are worried about. In the end, even if the administration misses this at each step, which I doubt, her "lazy" habits and inattention to detail will trip her up in her career.

This is the thing your room mate hasn't thought about: When you finish all your courses, the uni/college goes through your history to make sure you have finished all the classes, got the right grades and everything is in order according to the standards of the state/nursing board/uni. This is where she will get tripped up, and I doubt that they will let her go back and redo a first year course after she has done all the others. I mean, what does that mean for the courses that required A&P as a prerequisite? How do they know she was adequately able to engage without the knowledge base? Worst case scenario: she has to redo her whole degree. Even then, some policy could prevent her from being able to rectify the situation at all.

She seems to think that being able to enrol in the nursing classes means she is home free, but maybe you could point out that they go over all your classes/marks at the end before they recommend you to graduate. But that is as far as you should go with it. Any more would be poking your nose in where it doesn't belong and giving yourself a bad reputation (I know, it shouldn't be that way, when you are trying to do the "right thing".)

You will find there is a lot of unfairness in life; be prepared to see a LOT of it in the nursing workplace. Politics are a *****.

:up::up:;)

Not your business. You may not know all circumstances. Stay out of it....

With her attitude and grades, she may find it difficult to even graduate from a nursing program as difficult as they can be. I would let Karma decide her fate. Good luck to you and your studies.
