Did everyone have a 4.0?

Hi everyone,

I have been on this site for a while and see that many people had a perfect 4.0 going into nursing school and its making me nervous because I am suppose to start in Aug. and dont have a 4.0 (its a 3.7). Does this mean that I wont do well in nursing school? Is there anyone out there that has done well in nursing school with a gpa lower than a 4.0?

Thanks for your replies

Your req gpa does not mean u will do well or bad... Nursing is a whole different animal... I'm a first semester ADN student, I went In thinking I would have no life etc... Honestly I did very well with little studying.. 3.7 gpa, imagine if i would have studied ! Its all about putting together what u are reading and learning, good luck. I know people with masters and bachelors that barely made it thru the program.

I had a 3.5 going into BSN school.

Thanks or all the replies!!! I think I was just getting discouraged because it seems like EVERYONE on this site had a 4.0 going into nursing school and are always complainin about how hard it is. I know nursing school will be different than the prereqs and am feeling better today.

I got accepted to Union University in the Memphis area with a 3.8 GPA (as a 2nd bachelor's degree) and I am pretty proud of it because I worked hard to get it! Sure I wish I had a 4.0. I can always push myself harder. BUT... my goal is to become a competent nurse to my future patients.

I plan to review all of my A&P materials this summer prior to the fall semester (I take patho and pharm). I think being prepared for these classes will help. And if you set your mind to it you will do it. Think positive thoughts. Give yourself credit for how far you have come.

AND remember, the GPA doesn't make the future nurse... the person makes the nurse. Also, we will get more exposure and experience when we get a nursing position.

I had not even close to a 4.0 as an undergrad....and just finished my first semester of my ABSN program with a 3.82. I think I just do better with this because I truly do love it and "get it". So obviously, my undergrad GPA is not indicative of my nursing school GPA.

WOW! That's really good! YAY:cat:

Lets me honest though.

being a nurse takes decent intelligence but your intelligence doesnt mean anything if you cannot connect with the patient or critically think while under stress. Some of the smartest people in class can also be the most socially retarded people out there. Thinking on your feet is another issue.

Nursing school is different than pre-reqs.

it is very gray. It isnt black and white like A&P and patho.

I miss black and white

Your GPA actually is really good. My school looks at a GPA of 3.0 in overall science classes and a GPA 3.0 total for all classes of pre-reqs (BSN | University of Maryland School of Nursing). I entered with a 3.65 and i remember my advisor telling me i had nothing to worry about. I believe i heard our lowest GPA accepted in my class was a 3.0. Don't worry, as my professors preach to us every day "it doesn't matter if you are a straight A student or barley passing. When you graduate your job will not care what your GPA was. A good nurse does not come from good grades but from experience". Nursing is not always by the book. Its a good reference but not a concrete method. As most of us know nursing is always changing.

I didn't have a 4.0 going into nursing school either. I had a 3.68. I was happy with that. i got the grades I deserved early on in my college career (never studied, got C's in a few of my classes). After I started taking school more seriously I got mostly A's and a few B's. Our school goes by a point system and only a partial GPA is factored into that (Math, psychology, Bio, A&P, english). I will finish nursing school with somewhere around a 3.4. I'm still happy about that. I KNOW that I am an intelligent person and I KNOW that I will make a darn good nurse. Cocky? Maybe, but just going by what others have said!

Bottom Line: How well you do in nursing school has everything to do with how badly you want it, staying organized, and taking extra time to learn new things every day. I am in my 4th quarter of an accelerated ADN program and I have a 4.0. However, this is coming from a person who was always smart but played around in high school never taking it seriously...my GPA was terrible like a 2.8. Fast forward 8 years later... now I am 26 years old, this is my first time attending college but now I actually take it seriously. Prior to this I didn't even have any medical experience. However, I am putting all my focus now on my schoolwork and actually enjoy learning. However, I will not stress this enough... your social life needs to be put on the back burner, you need to stay SUPER organized, and do not procrastinate! How can you get a 4.0? Keep on top of your assignments and your grades so that there are no surprises. When your friends call you to go drinking till 2am, say no. Any questions that are asked on assignments...never just give the minimum...you will not be given 90s or 100s for one or two sentence "simple answers". Elaborate and think outside the box. And last but not least...do not start a nursing program until you are willing to commit. if your friends and family love you they will put up with all of the craziness until you graduate. your social life will come and go...but this is your future and you need to make it count.

I had a 3.3 when I was accepted, and I just finished my first semester of nursing school with a 4.0 for the semester. Apparently this style of testing is how I think! Your prereq GPA is no kind of indicator of how you will do in nursing school. You get out of it what you put into it. :)

Esme, I was in no way implying that we're expected to regurgitate information in nursing school. If you read my post, I specifically stated that we will NOT be doing this. I know it won't be like pre-reqs and that GPA prior to nursing school isn't an indicator of how well you'll perform in nursing school. Please re-read my post and you'll see what I mean. Sorry if there was any misunderstanding, but that was not my intention :)

Apology not necessary :inlove:........I felt, my interpretation, was that it was implying that in the days gone by nursing schools only taught to regurgitate information....which is clearly NOT the case. I seldom get annoyed but that got under my skin....My bad. :shy:

You are correct what is required in nursing programs is completely different from what is required for other majors....and is completely different from what is needed for pre-reqs. Nursing requires a different more global way of assimilating all facts and knowledge to make the best decision......Critical thinking.....all answers are correct but which one is best.
