Happens all the time...whatevs; it stopped bothering me when I traded my ems uniform for crocs and purple scrubs at the first ED I worked at. Street cred hit bottom :-)

I'm dreading/looking forward to this. All I've done my life is violent collision sports: rugby, submission wrestling, football, muay thai. I was a strength and conditioning coach and a teacher in one of America's worst neighborhoods. I accrued 11 major surgeries and over a hundred specialist visits. So many I learned how to help my teammates and students with theirs. At the end of the day... being the most damaging athlete I could be helped me learn how necessary and how fulfilling it is to take care of others. It's so easy to get hurt/hurt someone else. So worth while and difficult to create meaningful healing. Looking to get into programs this year. This thread is very comforting.

I'll have to second this. I mean if I even think they're being judgmental I'll just give them a quick flash of the "gun show" and problem solved.

People who have no clue are surprised when they find out that Im "just a nurse"

then they ask "why arent you a doctor?"

When I posted my acceptance letter to facebook a mutual friend (my privacy settings have long since been fixed) commented on my post saying "Good for you, f****** nancy"

True story: Best L/D nurse I EVER had was male. In a military hospital and he was a captain in the USAF and the most gentle, respectful nurse I ever had the pleasure to have take care of me. I have worked with a couple male L/D nurses who were quite frankly, amazing. I am glad in the 4 hospitals where I worked L/D, men were looked at as an asset, not a "problem". GO MEN!!!!

It sucks that L and D oftentimes refuse male student nurses in the delivery room.

i got refused for my own child and im an RN...yeah i was cranky. The call was made for an emergency section i was told i was not allowed to go into the OR with my wife. The worst part is i work for that company! lol. granted im an ED Nurse but i work in the same building lol

as for being a Male Nurse / "Murse" as by buddy calls me. i got rode much harder in school than the females in my class but it made me excell, my buddies picked on me ( Forresters, IT, Farmer, Cop, Mechanic) until i told them i had 102 females in my class and the vast majority were more fun, could drink better, and were waaaaay smarter than they were made them stop picking on me...then they saw my salary when i graduated adn they all shut their mouths

Being a Male Nurse is nothing but i thing...gender doesn't make you better in my ED. Granted i would rather not see my ugly mug walk into the room if i were the pt lol

Yes people have judged me on many occasions. I've heard people say stuff like "why don't you get a man's job" and "what you failed at becoming a doctor"

Its just part of life. Live and let live. I never let it get to me. I'm happy where I am and the choices i've made.

I got the occasional "murse" comment but never really felt like I was being negatively "judged". Nursing is one of those professional that you just can't make fun of!

My older sister - upset with me - yelled out "You nurse!!!!" at me in a derogatory angry tone one time. ?? Also had a stranger poke fun at me one time for being a male nurse. I told this clown I also carried an M-16A2 rifle and played with "toys"at my other part time job as a "nurse."

The comments on here were funny to me, I have seen some of those things myself or heard of others experiencing related things. I don't work in a hospital so hospital politics and the games played there are unknown to me, but I did get a taste while in nursing school. Me, being a bigger guy was called on constantly to move patients, pick up heavy stuff, or otherwise be physical labor on command. Not a big deal unless they were asking me to do manual labor in lieu of actually learning so I had to say no a few times. I think if you get offended easily due to being a male nurse then perhaps you should reevaluate what brought you into the field in the first place. If your passion for nursing is strong, and/or you have solid reason(s) to be a RN in the first place then any criticism you hear is simply noise. Do what you trained to do and what you believe is the right thing to do and anything else (like random sexist comments about your profession) is irrelevant and move on.
