Just wondering if anyone else applied to this program. I went to UCLA for undergrad but I pretty much think I have no shot of getting into this grad program.
Does anyone know anything about how many people they admit? What they are looking for?
IMO, I think it is one factor in consideration of the whole application. It is one way to increase diversity but it doesn't just automatically grant you admission. Other factors are considered including grades, volunteer experience, community involvement, leadership positions, recommendations, personal statement, etc. That being said, some may have everything and still not be admitted. So I'm sure the admissions committee had a hard time selecting. After reading some of the great experiences on the thread I'm not sure what they were looking for.

I agree it must be very hard for the admission committee. It seems to me that most, if not all of us have all of those things, so I'm feeling pretty discouraged. I know if I get in it will be a pleasant surprise, but not expecting it. I'm starting to feel really good about going to USD if not accepted because this competition thing is a bit too much for me if I re-apply.
BTW, Martinosa, I'm so sorry to hear that it didn't work out for you Best of luck to you!!
I'm glad to hear that... it would really suck to be admitted just because of SE. I would totally rather get admitted on my merits.
Doesn't anyone think its weird that we've gotten several rejections but no acceptances at all? I wonder if those DO come out later because earlier posts had mentioned that some of the final decisions were made last minute (e.g. last week).
I wouldn't read too much into that. There's a very few number of acceptances to go around, so the fact that we've heard no acceptances isn't all that strange. I'm up after my bedtime wrestling with my feelings about SE admissions. I've so often argued to friends that this is important, but it's totally different when you're in the situation and you might get passed over for this reason.
Yea, I've talked to people about the same issues. It's funny because I've never thought of it in terms of how it could benefit me in situations like this. I just think in terms of grades, experience and hard work and the like. It's a hard situation to start factoring all the other stuff in. I rather not think about it, to be honest.
Anyhooooo, whatever situation I'm in, someone else is in one much worse. So I try to stay positive. And I've applied to several more schools, so we'll see how that goes. Grim but possibly promising. Anyone heard anything about Loma Linda?
Well, based on the admission evaluation criteria, GPA and academic performance are the most important, followed by life/volunteer experience and then statement of purpose. I was trying to think if I had almost 500 applications to go through, I would probably try to narrow it down by this criteria, so wouldn't that mean that SE would be toward the bottom since that's in your statement of purpose. I'm just thinking that you guys shouldn't worry too much about not including that information because really, if everyone included that then it would make it even harder to choose for the committee. I would think as far as the SE thing, they would select someone that really stood out. I mean, let's face it, we all have some sort of thing to say. I have been working since I've been 13 with a single mom and I supported myself through college and still do without any financial support from my family, and have been through a lot of challenges, but I don't think they should select me based on that. But that's just my opinion.
It's useless but here you go.

Wow, you all sound like way more than worthy candidates. I can't believe that you would be rejected! This is shocking. So, MECN2009 is the only admit so far?
Wait, I'm kinda confused. You guys are saying they selected people based on their socioeconomic status?
