Did anyone apply to UCLA's MECN Program for Fall 2009?

Published

Just wondering if anyone else applied to this program. I went to UCLA for undergrad but I pretty much think I have no shot of getting into this grad program.

Does anyone know anything about how many people they admit? What they are looking for?

Where'd you read that?

I'm not sure, I think it was somewhere on this forum in a previous year thread.

I wonder how many guys applied to the program?

I wonder how many guys applied to the program?

I'm hoping only you did! ;)

well that is not the case!!! I wish it was. there is mateo and mnguy016 too.

well sarah, you could improve your exoticness by being the only female-to-male transsexul applicant. I guess that wouldn't work...seeing as they've already made the decisions. There's always next year...

I don't think gender makes a difference, do y'all think so?

Well, I think there's a medium here between them going for 50-50 and gender not making ANY difference. It may be kind of an affirmative action thing, as in, all other things being equal, maybe they'd choose the guy because they want to increase diversity in nursing and in their program. I have trouble believing that they would go 50-50 though (although stranger things have happened). That would mean that a guy applying would have a ridiculously disproportionate chance of getting in. I can't believe they'd want to have a two-tiered class where the standards are much lower for men. Not only would that be bad for the program, but it might cause resentment. Martini, I'm sure if you make it in, you'll be deserving. And, given the number of applicants, if you DON'T make it in, you may well be deserving also.

Okay guys, I have to clarify a few things that were mentioned above in your postings. First, there is a 3.0 minimum GPA to be accepted into the Graduate Division of UCLA, so while a few students may not have met the minimum, there would have to be other circumstances that would be explained for the lowered academic performance required. I don't know the avg but it's around 3.3-3.5 CUM (not sure if this is last 60 quarter units). Also, the school DOES want to diversify its class and is focused on increasing its enrollment of males and minorities. However, there are no rules of 50/50 or whatever, we have 7 males in our current class of 53 and the class of 2009 has 3. So, don't read into things that you may have read on previous threads, there are no lowering of standards for any applicants. Everyone that I am in class with deserves to be there and we all work hard to succeed and make the program better for future students. I'm only saying this because you should take others' opinions on these boards with a grain of salt. A lot of the info in past threads are incorrect, outdated and hearsay. If you really want to know the truth, wait until you receive your admissions/denial letter and then make an appointment with our asst dean Dr. Cardin. She will be more than happy to honestly review with any candidate what was factored into the applicant's qualifications and denial/acceptance. I'm only sharing this because it's not going to do you any good conjecturing as to why or how until you receive your decision letter.

Thank you for clearing that up Berry!

I thought mnguy016 was a girl. I'm chinese/viet and "nguy" is a common last name. Could be wrong though. :D

Thanks for clearing that up. Thank you Berrygood for your advice.
