Did you always know you wanted to be a nurse?

Published

Or was this something that you eventually discovered?

I just graduated from high school and I'll be the first to say that I've gone down a list of all the possible majors I could declare.

Yes, I know most would call me fickle because I changed what I wanted to do quite frequently. I think it also gave me the opportunity to explore ALL of my options.

I entered high school and I absolutely loved graphic design. The love for that eventually went away. It's fun but it's not a passion. I also loved English. But I realized I just didn't want to be teaching grammar to students 8 times a day. I was interested in anthropology but the reality is, without a PhD. It's pretty much a worthless degree.

I wanted to be a police officer, because I have this desire to protect and help others. It's honestly what I wanted to do more than anything. Which is why right now I'm declared as Criminal Justice. But the fact is, I know that degree will serve me no purpose. I've talked to a few officers and they've told me the same thing. They don't care what degree I have.

I was interested in Athletic training so that I could be a physical therapist but that's just too many years of school and too much debt. I won't be happy. I was going to do accounting since I'm good with numbers but I know I'll want to kill myself after a few years lol

So when I really looked into nursing I saw how much I loved the idea of what I would do. And with all the information I've seen, and heard, I know this is what I want to do. Maybe if I can't get a job as a nurse I'll go for law enforcement but still. I know becoming an RN is really what I'd love to do now.

Again, these things went through my mind for years. It's not like i thought of all these things two minutes ago. High school was definitely a time where I got to think about what I wanted. And finally things are coming together.

Nope. I wanted to be a pilot first. I love flying and my grandfather (a doctor) had a plane. But I also liked field medicine after joining my county Search and Rescue Team. Fast forward 5 years, I'm on my way to being a flight nurse (a mix of aviation and medicine).

Specializes in LTC, Hospice, Case Management.

Wanted to be a nurse since I was 5 or 6 years old. Why?? Don't know. There was not one single influence in my life..heck I was the first to ever go to college on both sides of the family.

Had some career assessment test in Jr. High. Came home crying my eyes out because it said I would make an awful nurse. Dear ole Dad assured me that that test must have been made up by a stupid person. (by then, my parents were even convinced that I WOULD be a nurse someday).

Graduated and working as an LPN at the age of 19. I was a TEENAGER, in charge of 2 CNAs and 40 some patients every night. Now that I'm "old" it blows my mind that someone was stupid enough to actually me to do it.

Specializes in Endoscopy/MICU/SICU.

To answer your question, I was a bit like you. I never really knew what I wanted to do and bounced around a lot of ideas. When I was 23, I decided I needed to decide on something, and nursing sounded like a good choice.

Just wanted to tell you though, my cousin just graduated with his master's degree in criminal justice and got a job offer from the CIA to work at the white house. He can't tell us the exact position yet, but sounds pretty sweet to me. Hardly wasted. Do what you have a passion or strong interest in. Money and prestige, if that's what you're looking for, will follow.

That's awesome but I don't have a desire to go to graduate school. As excited as I am to start college. I just don't LOVE school that way. I want to get in and out. But I will not say that I'm NEVER going to go to graduate school. Why? Because situations change. So who knows. For now, it's not going to happen. But maybe it will when I'm older.

To the OP, yes, I knew I wanted to be a nurse since the age of 6.

Nope, I did not grow up wanting to be a nurse. I really had very vague plans for future mostly along the lines of "I don't wanna be a teacher, a nurse, a secretary, a babysitter..." But I came from a poor family with 4 younger kids still at home. My parents needed me to become independent ASAP. I went to college for Biology, but had a roommate in nursing. I helped her study and pretty soon I was learning more than she was. My whole motivation was that nursing would give me a suitable profession for a woman(this was the early 70s, before women were allowed to do a lot of other jobs) and would afford me the ability to support my family, should I need or want to. I graduated nursing school at the age of 20 and never looked back.

It's amazing how far we've come. Well, I'm glad you haven't looked back!

Specializes in adult ICU.

It has sort of come full circle for me. My first ambition as a very young child (4 or 5) was to be a nurse.

Throughout my school years and early college, I went through teacher, lawyer, doctor, social worker, biologist. By the age of 22, I was back to nurse. And here I am!

To answer your question, no.

The question you should be asking is: If you knew then what you know now, would you still choose nursing?

I wanted to be a nurse since I was 5. It has never left my mind ever since.:):)

Nope, I'm a late bloomer. Sometimes, I think I'm still blooming. Lol.

The list of what I wanted to be when I grow up at age:

4 - Office person (i.e., anyone working behind a desk and with a lot of paper work) seemed cool to me at the time because there was an aura of self-importance.

9 - Anthropology... more specifically Egyptology. My dad was an avid History/Discovery channel fan and I was sucked in every time Dr. Zahi Hawass would host a show on Ancient Egypt.

12 - Journalism. The only subject I did well in middle school was English.

14 - Business woman. I wanted to wear a suit and command a group of people to listen to what I have to say.

20 - Registered Nurse. Mom wanted me to be a nurse. I didn't know what I wanted at the time. I just entered nursing school just to please my Mom. After my first year of nursing school, I started thinking "Hey, I'm really liking what I'm learning." I realized that I could not picture myself doing another profession. I'm completing nursing school 2011 so I'm really excited about that. I know nursing is not a glamorous profession but I love the fact that I'm helping people. It is a privilege for me to help patients get better especially in their most vulnerable times of their lives.
