Desperately in need of advice before school!!!!

Published

Hello all. I am a 22 year old who loves the health world. I really want to work in a hospital, but I have no idea what to be. I have looked into phlebotomy, medical assisting, LPN, RN, X-ray tech, respiratory therapy, and clinical lab tech. I love it all!!! I want to start working asap, but I don't know what to be! What healthcare job will take the shortest amount of time schooling wise? What jobs could also lead into a nursing job/RN bridgepprogram?

Specializes in L&D, infusion, urology.

The only one that bridges to RN is LPN. You'll have to look at the market in your area to see what is worth doing. CNA is always a good start if nursing is your interest.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Certified nursing assistant (CNA) training only takes a few weeks to a couple of months, so it is the quickest route into healthcare.

The LPN and the paramedic are the only two roles that will render you eligible to apply to RN bridge programs.

Thank you guys so very much!!! I think I will be looking into EMS!!!

That's a good idea in my opinion, like people have said before me the only two route to bridge over to RN is from paramedic or LPN/LVN programs. However, when you bridge from paramedic it does take a little longer compared to LPN. RN is a great field imo there is many different areas you can work, and the diversity of jobs I love!

Just to be clear. Paramedic is the only form of EMT that bridges. To become a Paramedic it is a 2 year degree after prerequisites. If your end goal is RN it would take less time to just go straight to RN. Also look into the ambulance services in your area. Many areas do not hire EMT-Basics or AEMT's. You may only be able to get volunteer experience as a BLS provider. You may be able to get a paying gig with a metro transport agency or, depending on experience, you may be able to land an ER Tech position or a position doing transports within the facility.

Good luck with what ever you choose, but make sure you really look into the job market and work environment.

Be mindful that paramedic-to-RN bridge programs are not very numerous and may be hard to find, whereas LPN-to-RN bridge programs are numerous. Also, as a previous poster mentioned, becoming a paramedic takes two years, while becoming an LPN takes 12 months.
