Denver School of Nursing

U.S.A. Colorado

Anyone out there going to or planning on going to the Denver School of Nursing ... particularly their "upper division" RN program?

Just wondering your thoughts, esp. on the fact that they are not yet accredited as a baccalaureate program. Is that a concern for anyone who is a student or soon-to-be student?

Hi Summer! I'm planning on testing out of the English and Math (pretty sure I can, I tested out of them at CCD (then decided not to go there) and I passed the NET at Concorde (then decided not to go there either :chuckle ) - so assuming I do test out of those, I will be taking the medical terminology and the basic A&P with you. My work schedule is so busy right now that I haven't had the time to schedule the testing yet but will get it done soon I hope. :)

Haven't gotten the CPR cert yet either. In the Admission packet, they mention the American Heart Association "Healthcare Provider" CPR Course. The Colorado CPR location is: 7550 W. Yale #A-220 in Denver. Call them at (303) 980-1015. They should be able to take care of that part.

No I have not taken the A&P 1or2 or the Psych 235. If I recall, we will have to take these before entering the RN portion right? I'm really looking forward to October. Its been a while since I've been in a school setting and the normal nerves go along with that, but I am really excited!

See you soon.

Dana

Dana, so you'll be there in October too? Yeah, we'll see you then. What prereqs do you still need to take? I will be taking Med. Term. and Basic A&P. And that will be also at night. I am pretty much done with all the requirements except for the CPR cert. that i don't have yet. I still need to find out where i can take that. BTW, are you done with A&P 1 and 2 and Psych 235? Let me know. Thanks!

Hi Dana,

I will check that ph # that you gave me. It's not until January that we will need it but just want to finish the requirements before January whenever i have time now. I am pretty busy with work too at this point so we'll see when i can do that maybe on a weekend if they're open. Yes, you're right the A&P 1 and 2 and Psych 235, we won't need it not until after LPN. I just thought I would ask you about that. I also need to take that before i can continue with my RN. Anyway, thanks for the info and I will just see you on October. It's been a while since the last time I went to school so hopefully I can easily adjust again to studying every night. :)

Hi Summer. Just wanted to let you know that I signed up for the CPR "Healthcare Provider" course on Saturday, August 13th. Holy Cow! The manual they sent me is 250+ pages long!! The course is geared for those who already have a "medical education" (which I do NOT) but it states on there that it's also for students. You have to read the book before you attend class and you must get at least an 84% on the written to pass. I'm through the 6th Chapter and feeling much better than I did when the book first came in the mail, but I am wondering if it would have been better to have waited til after med terminology and A & P 1??? On top of that, I also registered for an online English 121 course that starts in August too (thought I'd take care of that before the second year program starts.)

Haven't heard from you guys at DSON (or Summer39) in a few so I thought I'd just check in. How ya doing??

Are you talking abou the BLS for healthcare Providers book? I had to do that too. I don't know where you are doing your CPR course, I did it through the American Heart Association. You really only need to skim that book and get the key stuff -- like how to do CPR in general, how to do it on a baby, techniques, really only the stuff you will need to know when at the scene. They show a video in the class which covers pretty much everything and they stop it every few minutes to discuss what you just saw. Then you do the practice on the dummies under supervision and they tell you everything you need to know. It's really very easy. The written test is a breeze, I don't know anyone that failed it and it just asks stuff about what you've done in class. And if you do happen to fail, they will let you take it again right then and there. :)

they have applied through the commission of higher ed and i received email back from the office that is handling it. i'm told it takes 2-4 years to become accredited to grant degrees, though they are accredited as a private occupational school

[color=#99cc33]what type of school is the denver school of nursing?

denver school of nursing is a private, postsecondary educational institution that is dedicated to providing educational programs and training in nursing, health science and allied health career fields

http://www.denverschoolofnursing.org/faqs.html

[color=#99cc33]is the denver school of nursing approved?

all nursing programs are approved by the colorado state board of nursing.

the denver school of nursing is approved and regulated by the colorado department of higher education, private occupational school board.

i am concerned about this program listing courses as "upper division". occupational schools do not have the licensure to grant college degrees. degree awarded will be a diploma in nursing at the current time. none of it's credits will be transferable to a college program as equal college credits.

this school will need to be approved as college something that takes several years to occur after successful high rate on students passing nclex.

i've seen very few programs acheive college status.

you can check out this info by contacting the colorado department of education. karen

Hey Dana, sorry for not replying to your email right away. just got busy with a lot of things here and at work. anyway, thanks for letting me know the information about the CPR class. haven't had a chance to call the # yet but i will do that later. Let me know what happens to your CPR class. Have you started reviewing or done reading the book? Looks like there are more people going to DSON. I am looking forward to meeting you all.

As a recent nsg school grad (FRCC) I would seriously caution anyone thinking of spending $30,000 on nursing school. Even though there are no wait lists, I still don't see how it can be a financially sound decision, unless you don't care at all about standard of living, living costs, ect (most RN's care quite a bit about this). When you finish and have to start paying back the loan, on a new grad salary, (I make 23.00) that would put you in line making little over what CNA's do for several years. And I don't know what would be making this program superior to FRCC, whose students spend around $6,000 on tuition.

Nsg school is a game of chance right now all over colorado, b/c of so many people trying to get in and there not being enough instructors, not enough clinical sites, the list goes on. FRCC is nothing to brag about, but I guess it was good enough that I passed the NCLEX, which is really all that matters in the end when you go to get a job - at least that was my experience.

Sorry to be cynical, but as one that has "been there and done that" I am wondering if it was really worth it, considering what I had to go through to get through the program. I can make a good argument that nsg school is overrated. I like the human caring aspect of nursing, but I got the same sense of accomplishment working as a CNA.

There are other career choices out there, many in health care. Before I spent 30,000 on nsg school tuition, I would consider them.

Hello again! thought you disappeared there for a minute! So glad things are working out for you and that you will be at DSON!! I can't wait til October. I'm already buying books and stuff (I know I'm probably buying the wrong ones but I just can't help it - the urge is overwhelming! :chuckle ) We should be getting our schedules and book lists by the end of August. Woo Hoo!! I feel like a little kid. :)

See everyone soon!!!

Yes, that is the book. I think I spoke too soon about it being so scary looking. I have read it - front to back - and you're right. Its not at all that bad. I am taking my course at the American Heart Assoc. as well (Yale and Wadsworth approximately). I appreciate the feedback. Wasn't sure what to expect at the course. Thanks!!!
