Denied employment without checking excellent references!!!!

Published

:oMy dilemma is that I applied for a prn position as a LPN at a convenient care/occupational medication clinic. I initially had the interview with the HR person on friday1/25/08, who made me take a typing test (which I aced), took a copy of my license and CPR card, and a copy of my last years evaluation from my present employer. After the interview, which I thought went really well, she told me to interview with conv. care manager on monday 1/28/08. I went to that interview which I thought went really well. The manager talked about when I could do orientation (which lasts for a week) and we tentatively set up a week. Today I get a message on my cell phone voicemail saying that they were not interested and that if I had any questions to give them a call. So I proceeded to try and call HR and only got the voicemail which I left no message, then I called the Conv. care manager and asked her what happened and her first response was that maybe my references didn't check out. Needless to say I have EXCELLENT references. I had 3 great professional and 3 great personal. I told her it couldn't be my references, so she told me that she would make a few calls and for me to call her on Wednesday. I then called HR again, mostly because the conv. care manager seemed to have no idea that I was not the chosen employee even though I say I have great references and she even gave the okay for HR to check them all out after our interview. HR told me that the reason they were not offering me the job was "confidential". What the hell is confidential? I asked her was it so confidential that I could never apply at this facility again or what? She said yes I could reapply in the future, which I will not. During all this I remember the HR lady asking me if I knew anyone at any of the clinics and I proceeded to say yes. That was my first mistake (being honest). I told her that one of the nurses that works at another conv. care clinic was a former nurse at the clinic that I worked at. So my guess is she went to her which is a classic BI---!!!, instead of calling any of my references. I called my references after all of this and not one of them including my HR had received a call in regards to me. What the He!! is wrong with this picture? I'm hurt and angry. How can someone who noone liked at her previous job be the deciding factor in a job that I applied for? I guess my question is, WHAT THE HECK DO I DO NOW!!!!! I'm more than qualified and feel that I would've been an excellent asset to the clinic. Please help me not lose my cool and go off on someone. HR didn't do there job appropriately and took the deciding factor from a non-management ex-coworker. I'm stumped and feeling really betrayed right now. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Sorry this is so long.

The odd part about this is that I contacted the manager and she told me that she gave HR the okay to check my references. When I called HR today to talk to someone other than the one that interviewed me. I asked her what was the "confidential reason", and she told me they didn't have to say. She then called me back alittle later to tell me she talked to the lady in HR that interviewed me and said it's documented that the manager said "NO" to me and that is why they didn't check my references. But yet on Monday when I talked to the manager she said she gave them the okay to check my references and the only reason she could figure out why they denied me is because of a bad reference. I told her I had no bad references. She was going to make a few calls to see what happened. So I figure either HR is lying(checking with the inside former employee) or the manager is lying. Politics suck and it stinks to get stuck in the middle of it. Yes I will continue to raise a stink because I was honest and someone there was not.

This is not a case of miscommunication. Like you said, someone lied. Do you really want to work at such a place? Imagine what it will be like down the road. You'll have to second guess everything that is told you, try to figure out who to deal with, who to avoid, bring a lawyer with you every time you put in a request for time off, ad infinitum. Just concentrate your efforts on finding a place where they have a better idea of who's on first and who's on second. Believe me, you'll most likely be glad you did. Be thankful these dolts are showing their colors during the hiring process and not four months later, when you need something important done for you.

To what purpose? Seriously.

since working (in nsg and non-nsg jobs), i have come to realize that human resources people can be quite an unscrupulous bunch...

actually, not just in human resources.

you didn't get the job:

and you're not going to.

you really need to accept this and move on.

unless you signed a contract, they are not under any legal obligation to check references or even give you a reason.

was it moral what they did?

obviously not.

other than mere convenience, why would you want to work for these people?

trust me, they would screw you over in a heartbeat.

i can't count how many wonderful, competent nurses i personally know, who have been fired and blackballed, all in the name of filthy, rotten politics.

none of us enjoys rejection.

but once we put our emotions aside, we can usually dust ourselves off and move on.

i'm concerned you are having so much difficulty in doing this.

please be careful in proceeding w/these people.

they might even accuse you of stalking or harrassing them.

truly, i'm sure they wouldn't hesitate in trying to make you 'go away'.

if you think they played dirty before?

wait until you really tick them off...

please, just let it go.

wishing you the best.

Good points all, but this is something the OP needs to seriously consider before continuing to press this issue.

In this day and age, companies are on guard for this sort of behaviour. Not saying that kstec has crossed that line yet, but she doesn't know what their history is in dealing with these sort of problems. If they've had issues with harassment or stalking behaviour in the past, their threshold for tolerating this is going to be pretty low. I'm not accusing her of stalking, but she needs to look at it objectively from their point of view.

You are spot ON, with your observations (as usual), Leslie.

And, the sad part is, whether or not one possesses the necessary qualifications for a position and has the references to support them doesn't matter in the LEAST to these individuals.

I understand what you are saying. Similar to you I had been working for a Hospital, wanted to go to another hospital (same company different location) was denied employment. I was told after many, many calls asking why.....it was a complaint issue. No one would even tell me what, why, when, who anything. I was told because it was the same company that supervisor to supervisor was all that was needed for a reference. I pursued it for a long time, in that state you do not have a legal right to see your personnel file. But, months before I was given a glowing reference by the same people who now denied me employment. Guess I upset someone.........am although I will never work there again and it was a blow to my self esteem, I am a good nurse and will continue to be a good nurse and too bad for them. There are a lot of good people, employers and honest people out there. hang in there and life goes on, making us stronger........love, laugh and LIVE.............

I just was looking for another job closer to home that might pay a little better and the job I was denied met that criteria. The pay where I work now is low and it's a heck of a commute. Good Evening to All!!!!

This sounds SO MUCH like me it's freaky!

I second this. I live in a state where employers can fire you for no reason.

Even if they are required to have a reason they can create a good enough one if they want.

You are only adding more fuel to their fire and giving them more satisfaction in knowing they have a hold over you. I hate it when I'm treated unfairly, too, but you just have to let it go.

As they say, you can't fight city hall, and there is really no difference here.

To all that replied in reference to being a stalker, no I am not. I just don't like in when the right hand doesn't know when the left hand is doing as in this company. When you're a honest, trustworthy person I guess you expect the same out of a hospital. But boy was I wrong. No I haven't contacted them again, and at this point it's a done deal. There loss, but somehow it would've been nice to let them know what they lost. Thanks again for the replies.

i'm sorry you're just learning about the immorality of man.

yes it is, their loss...

but somehow, i don't think the likes of them, would appreciate this concept.

you will be much happier when you are employed w/a facility that truly embraces pt advocacy and honor.

i really do wish you the best, kstec.
