Debinding books

Published

So thanks to the many suggestions about debinding books and only carrying the chapters you'll need....I went to staples yesterday, but they were only able to debind my fundamentals study guide, because its kinda flimsy and not too thick, where have you gone to get big ol' back killer books de bound? Who will do this?

We took ours to a local print shop and they did it for about $4.00.

When you say print shop, do you mean the kind where they do office supplies and print on t-shirts and various things? Or a kinko's like place?

Stupid question. When you are talking about debinding books; Are you talking about hardcover textbooks?

That's what I figured we were talking about.

With my large book, they took the covers off, then used something like a big paper cutter and cut through the glue/binding that adhered all the pages to the hard cover. They then ran it through a "hole punch" that allowed them to put the spiral binding and plastic covers in place. It's a beautiful thing!! ;)

Did you guys debind the books before you went to class or after already being in class? Like SAHstudent, I don't want to attend class and find out my instructor is the type to have the whole book in class. I want to debind but haven't been to my first nursing class yet. So should I wait till after the first week or so since I would have a gist of what the teachers like?

Also, for those who are wondering where to go to besides Fedex/Kinkos you can also try The UPS Store, Office Depot, Staples, OfficeMax, or any local print shop. I would call them and compare prices if your going to be debinding a majority of the books.

If you want to debind yourself heres a tutorial:

I would strongly recommended getting your books debinding and then 3 hole punched. I did it to my fundamental book and my med-surg book. I bought a huge binder to keep them in . Many students in my class was impressed.

I brought my to a local copy shop and they didnt charge much at all. Well they had to keep the book overnight, but well worth it.

I know with my school they sometimes didnt use the entire chapter, so I could just pull out the pages I needed and take them on the go.

Another helpful suggestion is if your school uses powerpoint presentations, you can print them out on 4x6 index cards and take them everywhere and study when you are waiting somewhere.

Good Luck!

I did mine several weeks in to the semester. I wasn't concerned about having the right chapters w/me as we had a very clear syllabus, but once my elbow started killing me, I knew something had to give. I had put it off as I hated spending the $$ and was a bit apprehensive about "tearing the book down". Now, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again!!

I mean a hometown local print shop. (Mom and Pop business) I would wait until I attended class and saw how the system worked. My school gives you a calendar of what is taught on what day and what to bring. When I would finish a test I would go to my sylabus and see what chapters we needed. I go a 4" binder and put the book in to keep up with it all.

God Bless,

Thanks for the info. The presentation on debinding a book yourself was deep.

Has anyone debinded a book and regretted it?

I think this is a great idea can't believe I never thought of it, but alittle worried about losing pages or ripping pages.

Just wanted to hear both sides.

Thanks
