Debinding books

So thanks to the many suggestions about debinding books and only carrying the chapters you'll need....I went to staples yesterday, but they were only able to debind my fundamentals study guide, because its kinda flimsy and not too thick, where have you gone to get big ol' back killer books de bound? Who will do this?

to FEDEX/KINKOS :)

To save money, I bought a used electric hole puncher on ebay, took some binder that my job did not want and debinded the books myself. I di each book very carefully and it was so worth it not to have to lug the books around everyhwere I went. I just kept the chapters grouped by unit tests.

But it costs less than $5.00 to debind a 1300 page text book. I could save the time by studying tho :)

My fundamentals book is 1700+ pages & FedEx Kinko's only charges $1.49 per cut to debind them & $2.99 to punch the holes. If you insert tab dividers, be sure to price compare before you buy, and check the dollar stores first!!! Those little tabbie thingies can add up quick!

I had 50 million page Maternity and Peds book broken down in to 4 sections at Kinko's. The smaller sections were so much easier to deal with and because they were spiral bound, I was able to lay them flat for reading or lecture.

I swear it was lifting that intact book from my bookbag for a few weeks that gave me 6 months of living with horrendous tendinitis in my right elbow!!

I called several of the Kinko's in my area(St. Louis, Mo) and they told me that they would not debind my books. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I was going to do this but I'm glad I didn't. Out readings are very rarely by Chapter. We might have chapter 33 but then a bunch of pages out of a few other chapters. So it's hard to not have the entire book if I leave the house to study.

Now I could pull out the areas I need and mark what I pulled out in the main binder so I can put them back easily but I worry that will really mess with things. Though at the same time it might really help. Guess I wouldn't really know unless I tried.

You may have to take it in person. You probably spoke to someone who does not know what you are talking about. Because it is one of the many services done at all Kinkos.

Also, let them know that you either want to debind and punch holes or spinal bind it which ever you prefer. although three hole punch is better , you can take it with you wherever you go

I had my fiance debind my huge med surg book (we use it for 2 semesters). I think he used a razor cutter of some sort:chuckle- It worked though! Then I used a hole puncher to put the book in a huge binder and then took out the pages when I needed them. I had issues with Kinkos looking at me like I was a nut for wanting them to do this.

Interesting...I had mine done at the Kinko's on Manchester Road in Ballwin, MO. It's a couple of miles west of 141, near Holloway. I took it in, explained what I wanted and it was done within an hour or so (I left it and came back for it). No problem, although it was close to $20 to have it broke in to 4 sections, with plastic covers on the front and back and spiral bound. I wished I had xeroxed the index to include with each section however as I had only one put in with the last section.

We also jumped around from chapter to chapter in class, not always in consecutive order, but using the syllabus, I was always able to ensure I had the sections I needed. Lugging that monster around was not really an option and not practical for pulling out on to a desktop. After the injury to my elbow, I was afraid I'd fracture my foot if it dropped off of the desk!!
