Deaf Nurses or Student Nurses

Nurses Disabilities

Published

Hi

I am hard of hearing and student nurse from Illinois. I had experinced hardships with nurse educ.instruction. They are having a hard time believing that deaf or hard of hearing can have access or professional careers in nursing or medicine. I tried to explained to them there are deaf/hard of hearing nurses and doctors out there.

My questions to those who are working as a nurse or student nurse, how did you overcome this type of barrier and What resource did you use while in school..i.e for example did you uses CART captioning or interpreters? If you did uses interpreters what level were they and were they familiar with medicine/nursing content and terminology?

Also how well did each of you did on tests? Did you have the interpreters interpret the questions to you or were you able to understand the material the way they worded the test?

Thanks

Abby

Thank you, Your word mean lots to me and I wont give up. I was wonder do you have to mark check when application ask you such as mine in virginia "Do u have a mental, physical, chemical dependency condition which could interfere with your current ability to practice as a nurse aide?" I'm tried to take my first time NNAPP written and skills examnation to get my certification nurse aide but they never make a decision to approved yet

Hi!

You know what, I can't seem to remember the application. I filled it out around the end of August to early September. Our director of nursing had us all fill it out at the same time to assure it has been filled out appropriately and accurately (to avoid any errors). Although I didn't do anything differently than my other classmates. Perhaps I didn't mark that category or it wasn't on the application.

I would ask a local vocational rehabilitation if you need to mark it or not. What your rights may be. Et cetera.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

I have been completion nurse aide a course approved by Virginia Board of Nursing as meet all requirements for a nurse aide course, that making me eligible to take national certification exam but that will be 2 years this summer since they have not approve my application for certification by examination bec of my deaf I feel this is all waste but I am not give up. I already show up for a informal conference with board of nursing they couldn't make decision if I can take a examination so there will be formal meeting with board of nursing coming soon; I feel this is so unfair and I did nothing wrong.:o

:nurse:

GOOD NEWS! March 20 I went to my formal hearing and Board of Nursing approved that I can take my national certification exam for CNA about the time after almost 2 year! YEAH!!! I am so happy!:yeah:

Hi deafies,

Hmm.. I just registered for Pre-Nursing Assoicate Degree. (I have to take CNA then put on one year wait list for AAS in Nursing program...) I am VERY Pro-found deaf and I am so glad they are letting me in nursing program because last year I tried to enter EMT program. I got denied due to my deafness:banghead:. (Allied Health claimed that came from the Illinois Dept of Public Health) But they allow me to take nursing with understanding that I can use automatic blood pressure cuff and they are still debate to see if they can allow me to use that pilot palm stethscope) :bowingpur Hope so!

Deaf MALE to be Nurse...

Deaf male nurse 2b.. congrats on the acceptance into the nursing program!! I once was in the RN program at a CC and all I can say is I wish I wasn't in so much denial for asking for help about my hearing impairment. I always would say to people I got it and can handle it myself. So please get all the help you need to excel to become a Rn. U will do fine and u will also face struggles just like the hearing student too. I did not complete my program only because of being too immature at that time and not studying enough and also working long hours ..so i failed the lecture part. But again if you study and ask for any help you should be fine.

I am looking to start the LPN program after 10 yrs ago of putting my nursing aside. I want to try again but I will start off as a LPN student. Just some advice and encouragement. I wish you luck and keep us HOH/ deaf nurses posted.

:yeah: Congratulations on winning your right to take a bloody exam! My goodness, you would think after the Americans with Disability Act (1990) we would be so beyond this silliness. But so many hearies have such misunderstandings when it comes to hearing loss and deafness.

Anyway enjoy your work. Good Luck with whatever decision you make regarding your educational career. Theodore Roosevelt once said "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are" Never stop learning. Be the best human being that YOU can be.

Yeah! I know but thank you so much!! I can't wait to find a job and I hope that I will get hiring much faster.

This is meant as a random entry, the general idea of significant hard of hearing issues. Shyness will cost you. Ask for accommodation if needed. Get a THICK skin. Get hearing aids and any items for hearing impaired medical providers. Sit up front, ask questions and do everything you are supposed to do. Research help from government agencies or from the appropriate school department.

People who are impatient with you, or rude to you, are that way with everyone. ALWAYS be polite, Always accommodate other's impairments, cultures or different points of view. Keep extra batteries and other items that you need to hear as close to mainstream levels as possible. :clown: Get over the idea that others often define you by your hearing loss, too bad, move on.

I have serious conversation limitations, am also very myopic, so having glasses on when I hear is critical for me.

Know your limitations, learn of others similar to you, who have excelled in nursing, do what they do. Thank you for this forum, I can hear about others views on how the world can interact with hearing impaired people.

Hello all,

what kind of stethoscopes does everyone have? Do you have to have an electronic one if you have hearing loss? Not sure if i will need an electronic one, but won't know until its too late? Anyone HOH that does not wear hearing aids and uses a regular scope?

We have a large deaf community where I work, so I am exposed to it more and more. I've met a gorgeous little 3 year old who switches between signing and speaking without turning a hair- her parents are deaf, but somehow have kept her right on track. It's wonderful that HOH are getting into the nursing profession. We need a real variety of abilities in nursing since we deal with so many different people.

Can someone tell me what CART services are?

Hello, my name is Jacob and I am doing basics course and am fixing to get my Associate's in General Studies from South Plains College in December. I plan to relocate to Houston end of December to go to nursing school. I want to get my RN license. I will be taking a CNA class to get my CNA this fall. I was wondering what should I do for nursing school? I am profoundly deaf but wear a cochlear implant in my left ear. I have excellent speech and listening skills and do not require an interpreter but TDD or TTY (Phones for the hearing-impaired) may be required for me. I don't know what to do about stethoscopes for cochlear implants or how to answer any concerns about how I can be a nurse with selective hearing? I am relocating due to discrimination from two advisers at my current school. I want to make the right choices of school in Houston. I do not want to move 800 miles away from my family and friends to make a mistake. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated, thank you.
