  1. Hi Marvie, Thanks for the response and advice to my post... :) Just thought that was so ignorant on their part to write one sentence to say they dont make provisions. I am gonna look further into this. I do read time to time many posts here about aspiring Rn like yourself who are hearing impaired and do the career thing. Thank you for you kinds and encouraging words to us students or nurses to not give up..
  2. Hi, Im a hard of hearing individual who wears two Bte aides. I have completed my associateds degree at my local community college with the help of nobody. But today 10yrs later my hearing has dropped to where I do miss some parts of conversations but Im not afraid to check myself and say repeat. So anyways, I sent a email to one of those private career schools for the lpn program that Im interested in since I use to work as a CNA, ...asking if that make provisions for me for a note taker and that my teachers speak loud and face me. I use an amplified phone and stethocope to accomdate my needs. My reply after two weeks was that they wont make provisions. So my guess is to apply back into a community college or university where they offer help to people with disabilities. Just sharing my story. the allycat
  3. Hi, just wanted to say I commend your courageou efforts going to nursing school. The attitude of there is no stopping you is awesome!! I know when I work as a CNA and I would answer the phone there were times I didn't understand, so I would just say hold on one moment please and ask the nurse to take the call. They were understanding. I mean if your doing everything else then it wouldn't hurt to get help and then return that help in some way also. I don't have suggestions on this type of situation but i am guessing that is something you need to work with your employer about this and maybe they can make some accomodations for you. Don't know what to say but I wish you the best of only the best.
  4. I think that is a yes and no question. Some colleges like UIC that I have read in past posts stressed that its not easy getting into the nursing program. Need high GPA than other universities or even differ Prereqs...Like at Trinity I was surprised that the Science prereqs didn't need to be up to date verses at most others univer that is recommended. I saw at West Suburb college that you need speech as a prereq which was another I didn't see at other colleges. So every university is different. But if you had to compare a university to an ADN program ...well most people can't or don't want that tuition burden. They may want to start working in two years vs. four years. Can be many different reasons. But its mostly true that at some universities that you can get in quick than your local community college. Take most of your prereqs at a community college and transfer out to a university to save money... Whatever works for you!! Good luck. You will be fine
  5. thanks.. i did check the site out and saw the listings of clinical sites.
  6. Hi..just reading these posts to get an idea of WS Nursing Program. Sounds like a great flexible program. Just one question about clinical sites. Do you u choose the site of hospital? What hospitals are the clinicals sites done at? Evanston is a far commute for me so wanted to know how this clinical pick works out at this school. Thanks and Best of luck to all in the Nursing Program!!
  7. oh thanks for the info.. that is great to hear you are anxious to begin the program Good luck!
  8. What do u mean u have to take a nursing class first? What is this class about? I called too about the program and they were pretty laid back about not renewing my prereqs that were over five yrs old...AP courses and micorbiology. But they did say that when they see the transcripts they will determine by grade..Hmmm. I like to hear from students who are in this program or graduated from this program.
  9. tmwhalens, Very sorry to hear your story about your mom. I was touched by it. Do you wear aides? two of them? You sound confident in yourself so you should start off by sitting down with an advisor at a community college or university and see what help they will offer if you apply for the nursing program. I am aware of myself that I used a notetaker in some of my classes. They have interpreters and other services to offer at the disabilties office in all schools. Maybe this can be some help that if they explain how they will accomodate you then that will push you to pursue your nursing career. If you read in some of the other threads here, many HOH nurses have bought special stethocopes for their clinicals and jobs. So there is hope and you can do it. I hope I helped ease a little and but go ahead and make that phone call to your school that your interested in. Talk to couselors and advisors and the disablities office and show them that you want this dream. Good Luck.
  10. burn vict. rn... its true...bte aides are bigger and carry more power. you can't built lot of power in the ite aides. they are made for patients with mild - begin moderate loss. when u hit moderate to severe..u definitely need bte aides type of power to keep listening skills intact and those nerves stimulating in the ears. I have met at a cochlear conference where people like you and i who wear aides eventually get cochlears because they don't benefit from aides at all. They are working people just like yourself who just don't give up. They really do fine at their jobs also. Its nice to meet people like that. They inspire me and give me hope to keep on going despite our hearing problems. Glad you found your steth and good luck. Stay strong.
  11. babyscanner what school are you going to apply at coming summer 09? I was seeing some jobs in hospitals but they did ask for at least 2 yrs experience. So I am guessing most lpn have to start off at the long term care. I agree if MA's arent paid well enough they should lower the cost of their tuition and raise the salary. That even goes for CNA's... Everyone works hard in the medical field whether its mentally or physically. They should get decent pay!! Lpn is a start of a career and hopefully for many to become a RN.Check out the lpn schools about bridging over to RN because I am reading in some past posts here that you need lpn experience for a year or two before you even begin taking RN classses. Or something about ADN trying to get their BSN even need experience also.Ask those questions. Ma's or Lpn's... either way its a start for people who need to see if they want to pursue their career in the medical field.
  12. INsurance for aids?/ I am waiting for the day to happen!!I pay out of my pocket. It depends where u go. Some places may offer payment plans with a initial down payment. Others like most hospitals won't. There are progams out there like DSCC which are funded by the state where they offer financial assistance fully or partially based on your income. But if I am not mistaken its mostly for children. Or pay on ur credit card where its mostly accepted anywhere. Its tough cuz they are expensive. I do know that public aid pays for them to people who don't work but they are restricted to certain places to go and how much to spend.
  13. hahah..that is what I was exactly thinking when I typed susan...me like a ding dongput deep instead of desparate...funny. u read my mind and yes a madonna fan! That is awesome that things are moving along well at school with you. You and I both know many hospitals don't hire lpn too much these days. Another hospital to look at is Christ in Oak Lawn. I have seen a few post like months ago.As for myself..well to be honest no I havent enrolled to do the AP course. What am I waiting for??? UHHH couldn't answer that either. I am more like afraid to go back to school cuz I have been stay home mom for 5ys. I feel like if I fail I will lose all the money at PCCTi....I know I need to work on my inner confidence. But first I need to get over this and take the AP class...and if I do well then maybe I will feel more confident in myself...baby steps.Take care and I will check on u time to time. Hope u dn't mind.
  14. OH sorry about the name Susan......but that was a reply for DeepSeekingNursing...
  15. Hey Susan, I remember u taking the class at Pccti for your lpn. how is that going? There was many threads posted the good and bad of the school. Yeah whatever...I saw on Macneal's hospital website they were looking for lpn but don't know exactly for what. Its located in Berwyn. Check it out and do a all jobs search when u get to MacNeal hospitals website. Good luck and hope to hear from you!!
