Hi,
I just got my acceptance letter for Daytona State (formerly DBCC) for January YEA!! This was my second time applying, I am so thankful I got in and so excited to get started.
So, is anyone else out there starting in January in Daytona?
Great. Thanks for the reply. I'm really looking forward to this semester. I definitely will need to alter my study habits to fit what Nursing school needs. I never really do well with study groups. My experience is that people end up chatting most of the time. I guess I'll have to try to give them a shot again.
Hey Nick,
No, I didn't go today, how was it? I am one of those non-traditional students and had way to much life going on preparing for the start, so I missed the "jump" as it were.
I am mostly ready otherwise, I am still waiting on one book and I haven't bought a stethoscope yet. I also haven't started my hep B sequence yet, I will probably sign the form declining it but I am definately going to do it, I surely don't want hep B.
Were you in that huge CPR class the night after orientation or did you go to the Winter park one?
The jump start was ok. I can see how it would be helpful to some, but I was kind of bored. I went just to make sure I didn't miss anything. I too am a non-traditional student and put myself a little behind by going, but I didn't want to miss something important. Have you never received your Hep B vaccination? If you have and just can't track down the records, you can just get your titer tested. I went to the BLS class in Winter Park on a Friday afternoon. Rest up this week. Should get interesting around here soon. I imagine we'll see a lot more new students on here soon.
First week is over, one word - BORING! OMG, Wednesday we spent 4 hours on hand washing. I am sure things will pick up, I think figuring out how the new curriculum will work is causing some turmoil/confusion. Anyway the clinicals at Rymfire Elementary sound like they will be fun but I am not sure how they will apply to "real world".
Not really what I was expecting. What did you think NickB?
Wondering if you would be around Sagan's Maid. I think nobody really knows what they are supposed to be doing. You can't blame the instructor, she's only been in town for 2 weeks. I'm concerned about testing to be honest. We've gone over 5 chapters already, but her lecture consists of a powerpoint presentation that is the main topics and subtopics directly out of the text book. She may say about a sentence or two about each subtopic and that's it. I just don't really know what she is going to want us to study. I guess after the first test we'll have a better idea. I certainly know how to wash my hands now.
You are nights right? In days we have yet to have a lecture, it has all been orientation, introducing ourselves, and many very long breaks.
As I said, I haven't had a lecture yet but I understand your concern about testing. I think part of the problem is they haven't written the tests yet for this new curriculum so the instructor doesn't know what to concentrate on. Maybe Fuuchan or someone else can comment but I think they normally had some sort of test-prep in the lab before the tests but now there is some question about that because they don't have a test to work from.
So, from reading your posts, seems like you guys are having 'fun' already. Nick, hey weren't you going nights? What happened to one of the instructors? I heard she got booted down to LPN instructor. I'm not sure what your schedule is going to be like (we have yet to see a child in the 'real world' let alone read up on them). But the basics still seem the same, read your chapters prior to class and ask your professor to elaborate on what you're not understanding. Last semester they didn't give us orientation on test taking until after the 1st test. My suggestion is to 1. Buy and NCLEX review book (especially NCLEX Review Made Especially Easy), it will really help orient you to the types of questions and how they're asked. 2. ABC - airway, breathing, circulation. These are the most crucial and take top priority. 3. Refer to Maslow's heirarchy of needs when answering a question. If you guys haven't gone over that yet, google it. It will help, trust me. Good luck!!:redpinkhe
This semester is obviously drastically different than previous. We aren't doing anything with sick people. This whole semester is about healthy people and how to teach them to maintain their health. Our first clinical is in a preschool. It seems like it will be an easier transition into the program.

Hey Sagans Maid,
Did you go to the jump start today? I thought it was an ok thing to go to.
