It seems that alot of people are doing nursing for a second career. Just curious. How old is everyone? Who has kids? Is it a mixed group in the professional part of the nursing program (I am still doing pre-reqs)? Where are you living and what school do you plan on going to. BSN or ADN? What area of nursing do you want to go into?
I am 32, will be 33 in August. I am married with 3 kids. I live in Phoenix and will be going to Arizona State University for my BSN. I am doing the BSN rather than the ADN because I would like to be a CNM. Although I am also interested in ICU too.

At 53, I am the oldest in my nursing class. I have three grown children, 3 grandchildren (my eldest is a physician). Some think I'm a bit off to be doing this but most show real support. I decided to become a nurse after a nasty divorce (I was married 30 years).
I was one of 8 children and but for two of the siblings, they are all in the medical field (as were my parents). The divorce released me to chase the dream of my life . . .anything in medicine. I have a previous non-medical degree and so that helped a bit. I have 14 months left and in total this
RN will have taken me 3 years. That's alot of time at my age. So far, so good. I do plan on going on to further medical studies post-grad but now I'm just concentrating on accomplishing this task. I guess this proves that no one is really "too old" to go after their heart's desire. Good Luck to everyone. :balloons:

I am 26 and feel older. I have two children and yes this will be my second career. I am currently an MT and have the itch to go back to school. I am married and my husband is currently in medical school.
This is a great thread! I love hearing about others....I am 37, engaged and have 2 cats and 2 dogs...have developed some serious allergies! I have been a Flight Attendant for 13 years. We have medical and emergency training, I feel as it is a good path into nursing. I start class May 10 for PN. Am extremely excited, although a bit NERVOUS............................Dawn
I'm 32, and a displaced homemaker now divorced and in school. I guess that counts as a second career. Either way, I'm definately in the non-tradition student arena. In my program it seems the majority of the students are in their late 20s-late 30s range oddly enough. Perhaps in a BSN program it would be different. I'm on the ADN route though since my sponsor wants me in and out fast. Their money!

I'm 36 years old and I have 4 children (2, 3, 4, & 6). I have 2 prereq's to complete. I'll be eligible for a BSN program at University of Akron (Ohio) in Fall 2005 and ALSO will be eligible for the ADN program at Stark State College (Canton, Ohio) in Fall 2005. I'm still debating which program I will attend.
