Curious. How many "older" students

It seems that alot of people are doing nursing for a second career. Just curious. How old is everyone? Who has kids? Is it a mixed group in the professional part of the nursing program (I am still doing pre-reqs)? Where are you living and what school do you plan on going to. BSN or ADN? What area of nursing do you want to go into?

I am 32, will be 33 in August. I am married with 3 kids. I live in Phoenix and will be going to Arizona State University for my BSN. I am doing the BSN rather than the ADN because I would like to be a CNM. Although I am also interested in ICU too.

I turned 50 in Jan and I'm almost finished with my first year of my ASN. I hope to continue on to get my ACNP (acute care np), by the time I'm 54!!

At 53, I am the oldest in my nursing class. I have three grown children, 3 grandchildren (my eldest is a physician). Some think I'm a bit off to be doing this but most show real support. I decided to become a nurse after a nasty divorce (I was married 30 years).

I was one of 8 children and but for two of the siblings, they are all in the medical field (as were my parents). The divorce released me to chase the dream of my life . . .anything in medicine. I have a previous non-medical degree and so that helped a bit. I have 14 months left and in total this

RN will have taken me 3 years. That's alot of time at my age. So far, so good. I do plan on going on to further medical studies post-grad but now I'm just concentrating on accomplishing this task. I guess this proves that no one is really "too old" to go after their heart's desire. Good Luck to everyone. :balloons:

I'll be 36 in August. I am the mother of a 10, 8,6 and 4 year old. The college I attend the RN program is set up in quarters. After a two year wait I am now in my first quarter of clinicals. Close to 50% of our class is over 30.

This is a great thread! I love hearing about others....I am 37, engaged and have 2 cats and 2 dogs...have developed some serious allergies! I have been a Flight Attendant for 13 years. We have medical and emergency training, I feel as it is a good path into nursing. I start class May 10 for PN. Am extremely excited, although a bit NERVOUS............................Dawn

I'm 25.....got my 1st BS at 21, now I'm back at the same university getting my BSN. Who would have thought? I'll graduate in May of 2006....6 years later than my 1st degree! :p

Specializes in emergency, psych, ortho, med/surg.
:p undefinedundefined Im 40 and done with pre reqs-waiting on clinicals in Tampa FL

I am 36, getting ready to start pre-req's at Montgomery Community College in The Woodlands, Texas. I have 2 daughters, 14 and 11 1/2. Currently working full time in the corporate world. I am going for the ADN program.

I'm 32, and a displaced homemaker now divorced and in school. I guess that counts as a second career. Either way, I'm definately in the non-tradition student arena. In my program it seems the majority of the students are in their late 20s-late 30s range oddly enough. Perhaps in a BSN program it would be different. I'm on the ADN route though since my sponsor wants me in and out fast. Their money!

I'm 36 years old and I have 4 children (2, 3, 4, & 6). I have 2 prereq's to complete. I'll be eligible for a BSN program at University of Akron (Ohio) in Fall 2005 and ALSO will be eligible for the ADN program at Stark State College (Canton, Ohio) in Fall 2005. I'm still debating which program I will attend.
