Curious. How many "older" students

Nursing Students General Students

It seems that alot of people are doing nursing for a second career. Just curious. How old is everyone? Who has kids? Is it a mixed group in the professional part of the nursing program (I am still doing pre-reqs)? Where are you living and what school do you plan on going to. BSN or ADN? What area of nursing do you want to go into?

I am 32, will be 33 in August. I am married with 3 kids. I live in Phoenix and will be going to Arizona State University for my BSN. I am doing the BSN rather than the ADN because I would like to be a CNM. Although I am also interested in ICU too.

beat everybody so far. in second semester RN program at community college. have two masters. was a pathologists' assistant for five years. got tired of the human parts assembly line. (although i have some good medical examiner stories). getting killed this semester. taking 15 credits. tired all the time. im 52. :rotfl:

I'm probably the oldest student our nursing program has seen for a while. Still, there were probably a third of the students in my graduating class that were over thirty.

I'm 25 and have 4 kids (9, 7, 4, 2). I live in southern Wyoming and am attending Western Wyoming Community College. I have just started my prereqs. I plan to transfer to the University of Wyoming for my BSN.

I am a 47-year-old mother of 3 sons who are 17, 12 and 9. This is my first time in college.

I'm midway through my second semester of nursing school. It's a distance ed program through Weber State University (nursing classes on line with clinicals at our local hospital). It's a great opportunity since University of Alaska does not yet have a nursing program in our small community. It's an ADN program and we'll graduate in spring 2005, ready to sit for our RN boards.

I am a single parent and had to quit my job and take out loans to go to nursing school and to support us. I had to do all the prerequisites, plus all the general ed stuff (I'm getting an Associate of Science degree as well). I'm doing 15 credits per semester including summers.

Obviously I'm motivated, but I am so energized intellectually and excited about nursing. I was in the right place at the right time to get into this program. Good luck to all of you who are wanting to get into nursing school. It's not easy, but I know it's gonna be worth it!

I'm 34, married, mother of 10 y/o daughter, 9 and 2.5 y/o sons living in Southwestern PA. I'm in my second semester of clinicals at WCCC. Only one fifth of my classmates are under 21. I am in an LPN/ADN program. I will have my LPN this summer ('04) and my RN in May '05. I love the coursework (demanding that it is!) and the staff that I have worked with on clinicals have been wonderful. I have a BS in Education degree and a Master's of Arts in Adult and Community Education. After working in jobs supported by grant funding and getting laid off twice in three years, I decided it was time to go into a field that I had considered since high school but had been afraid to take the chance. I don't think that I could have done this then but with life experience, I am loving it!

I'm 40, married and live in SE, TX. I'm in my second semester of clinicals at Lamar University. Only 5 more semesters to go till I get my BSN. I left working for the US Postal Service to go into Nursing.

Hi, I'm 46 years young, a career changer, and going to school full time to do my general education requirements and have been accepted into an ADN program for September 2004. I'm glad I'll have all of my pre-reqs done beforehand!

I have two sons, 13 and 10 and they think it's fun to see me color in my A&P Color book...;-) Me too!

Good luck to everyone!

Hi everyone- have been reading your posts for a while now and thought i'd join in.I'm a newbie-to computers, chatrooms and full on studying. ive just commenced a 3yr undergrad uni degree in bachelor of nursing- oh yeah, i'm an aussie and some of these abbreviations are esoterical, for example: - what does ADN, CNM mean? I too am older (40....aaaah!) with hubby and kids and there are quite a few of us in the class. mostly E.N's (enrolled nurses- a 1yr diploma couse) which I did year before last- prior to that i've been a carer in nursinghomes for 22 years- what a leap of faith hey?

Hi,

I need some advice. (I'm a 49yr. old mother of two sons 19 and 23,and caregiver for my 90 year old mother.) I've been enrolled in a 3 year ADN program and had to withdrawl this week. :crying2: I was failing the lecture portion of the med/surg class although I have an "A" in the clinical and lab portions. Anyway I withdrew because I didn't want to ruin my GPA and will return in spring of 05 to retake this class. (The only time it is offered).

Instead of sitting around for a year, I was wondering if maybe I should look into a Surgical Technologist Diploma? I'm so down on myself from doing so bad on the N-CLEX style exams that I'm not even sure if I could possibly survive the Surg Tech courses either. All I know is that I want to work in a health profession. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi! Im 38 now, married with 2 -11 yr old girls, and 1 -15 yr old boy. Who by- the -way is teaching me algebra!! Ya know whats funny is...I went to the CC when my son was 6 months old wanting a nursing degree back then...the counciler looked at me and said "your alittle older than the other students, are you sure this is right for you?" I was 24 then, and that stuck in my head..I never enrolled. Now I know I am not too old, and its time to get this done!! I am hoping to work in med/surd or orthopedics when I AM A NURSE!!! And dont listen to anyone who can not support you, if this is what you want dont let anything or anyone get in your way. :coollook:

I am also in Phoenix, I am attending GCC and Rio Salado colleges. Just finishing with my prereq's and will attend the nurse assisting program in the fall at Glendale Community College. Then hopefully, be in the spring 2005 nurse program. I am 40 and have 4 kids. 16, 14, 11, 2. I started my prereq's 2 yrs. ago. I am only taking 1 or 2 classes a semester. I am planning on becoming an RN and would like to work in the Labor and Delivery or the NICU. We will see. Would like to go on to become an xray tech or something in that field eventually. Will have to see. :balloons:

And, am I the only older student who gets asked if he's the instructor??

I was asked by another (young) student if I had any kids.

I said no and asked why? "Because you look like a mom."

The guy next to her moved to the other side of the lab

table. LOL!

I'm 45 years young. My friends have been supportive.

The few people that don't get it, I don't care about.

If they can't handle me going back to school, that's

their problem - NOT MINE.
