CSUSM ABSN Spring 2012

Published

Has anyone applied for spring 2012 ABSN program at CSU San Marcos? I applied back in june and now that I have seen the average scores for the Fall 2011 program I am in a state of panic. Sure I meet the average for the other cohorts, but I am definately at the low end of the fall 2011.

I just wanted to know if anyone had applied for the spring 2012 ABSN program and how do you feel about your chances.

@USMC: My TEAS was slightly higher than the average, but not by much!

@rpelayo: My advising worksheet is like yours in that there isn't a total point value for TEAS, GPA, etc. So this also means it doesn't specify my rank among other applicants. (I don't think they would be able to specify a "rank" value on the worksheet because where one ranks probably changes as new applicants apply. Hope that makes sense.)

I can't recall the rules about repeated courses. I know if you take a different course that fulfills the same requirement, they will fully accept the better grade, not average the two. For example: Let's say for the Math requirement you received a "C" in Calculus, but then took Trigonometry and received an "A". I believe EL will use the better grade, your Trig grade, to calculate your pre-nursing GPA. I don't think they would average the Trig & Calc grade into one.

However, the circumstances may be different if you've repeated the same exact course? I don't know... I would definitely ask though! I know for some colleges grade replacements are valid, while other colleges don't consider them to be replaced, they average the two grades. For example, let's say a person fails bio at a community college, but then retakes the same exact bio course and receives an "A". The community college then replaces the "F" with the "A" and the new GPA reflects the "A" grade only. However, if the same person applies to medical school, the "F" and "A" grades will be averaged, regardless of the fact that the CC replaced the grade. Personally I think that part of the system STINKS!!!

As for the adjustment process, I had my pre-nursing GPA adjusted once before; it was an easy and quick fix! I hope the adjustment is easy for you too! It’s definitely worth talking to your advisor about. Good luck and I hope this info was useful! :)

amyca: yes my university replaced my grade it was the same exact course and it was a FLUKE! totaly not my fault! our whole class failed! and we actually got the professor pushed into retirement because of it. I didn't even think other colleges would use the first score since it is not factored into the GPA very strange, and annoying!

What do you mean by adjusting your pre-nursing? how do you do this adjustment?

I have been trying to get ahold of my advisor I sent an email last week....and yesturday...and today...I guess they are busy.

@rpelayo:

Grrr... That stinks! It's tough to do our part as a student when our the professor doesn't teach well.

As for the adjustment made to my advising worksheet, I emailed one of the advisors for the ABSN. I had 2 courses that fulfilled the Oral Communication section. In one course I earned an "A" and the other a "B". I requested the course in which I received the "A" to be used for my pre-nursing GPA. I did all of this via email over the middle of the summer. I'm sure you've probably already taken the same steps... I've heard they're pretty busy, but I'm sure they'll get to you soon!

Is there another class you can use to fulfill that particular section? I know there are a few different Math, Oral/Written Communication, and Critical Thinking classes that would fulfill each section.

Wow I'm really hoping that they'll start getting back to me soon. I feel so far behind since I don't even have the pre-advising worksheet lol.

I'm trying to calculate my gpa for the last 60 units. I was just counting backwards from all my classes I've taken since undergrad and then counting backwards for the classes I took from senior year-junior year to get the 60 units. I was wondering, once I get to my junior year I have about 5ish classes....On my transcript everything is just listed alphabetically by semester. Do I continue to the count the classes backwards or in that semester just choose the classes with the higher grades? (I really hope this makes sense.. I don't know how else to word it lol!)

UCMC: Yes you count back the last 60 units on your transcript however if you out back and you only need 3 or 4 units to be 60 units, I read that they include the WHOLE semester/quarter. Which is very annoying to be because that last quarter that I have is TERRIBLE!!!!! ugh!

I should have been a liberal arts major gotten a 4.0 then gone back and took my science courses slowly to ensure an A....but noooooooooooooo I wanted to be a Zoology major and take insane courses like ornathology, and herpatology which made my GPA suffffffeeeeerr they should be called GPA decreasers.

@USMC: I've heard the same thing Rpelayo mentioned; the ABSN considers the entire quarter/semester.

@Rpelayo: I bet zoology was a killer! I almost think they should give extra points to those who've taken additional science courses w/labs.

Is there anyone out there who has been accepted for Spring 2012?!?! If so please share!!! :)

Yes please share!! I am hoping that maybe there will not be as many applicants this year so we can all get in lol. Wishful thinking I know.

I wish they gave more points to science majors! And patient care experience!

I heard back from Jay and you guys were right. I do need to include the entire semester! This sux cos I did horrible in an accounting class. I re-took it the following semester so I'm not sure if that replaces the grade or what. I emailed Jay.. so now its time to wait again lol.

And yes I agree I REALLY REALLY hope that there aren't as many people applying this cohort either! I hope there's enough space for me by the time I'm done with my class in December!!

I got an email confirming they recieved my TEAs score.. then they mentioned this

"Dear applicant, this e-mail confirms receipt of your TEAS scores. We will add these scores to your file. If you have not done so already, please submit your Pre-Admission Advising application, pay your Pre-Admission Advising fee and send all official transcripts. Once we have received all required documents we will review your file and send you your Education Plan."

I just wanted to make sure that they meant the application fee of $50 and the ABSN application itself right? Or did you guys have a separate fee to pay after you got your advising worksheet? I emailed them back, but of course I need to wait a week for an answer lol.

@USMC: Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "Pre-Admission Advising application and Pre-Admission Advising fee" is the $50 fee and the ABSN application itself. :o)

@UCSM: Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "Pre-Admission Advising application and Pre-Admission Advising fee" is the $50 fee and ABSN application. :D I didn't have to fill-out another application of pay another fee.
