Hello. I wanted to create this forum for people who are applying to Cal State Long Beach for Fall 2020. This is a place where we can compare and discuss statistics between us, as well as ask questions regarding the program.
Hi guys! This is the admin of this blog. I accepted admission to Cal State LA so I have not been following this blog anymore. But I was just curious... are you guys going to be having clinicals this Fall? Cal State LA will, (thank god) however, many of the hospitals have backed out of letting students attend clinicals (Kaiser, Cedars, etc.). I was just curious if Long Beach Memorial, as well as the other hospitals CSULB has clinicals at are continuing to have clinicals for Fall. Thank you for any info you can provide! ? and congratulations to everybody who got accepted!

Great to hear from you again! During orientation, they said Long Beach Memorial is expecting first semester students in the Fall. As for the other hospitals, they said weren't sure yet. I'm not sure if the semester students have gotten updates on that.

Well that is good to hear that Long Beach memorial is going to be holding clinicals again! It’s unfortunate there are so many uncertainties right now for all nursing schools in California. Hopefully they figure out something for the semester students! For Cal State LA, about half of the hospitals backed out... but I’m glad to know we will still be doing clinicals at a few of them. Best of luck to you all!
Hello everyone! This is the admin. As some of you know, I decided to go to CSULA. I wanted to check in and hear about you guys experience at CSULB so far? How do you guys like it?
Not gonna lie. Kinda bummed I didn’t choose to go to CSULB. ?
Pretty much the main reasons I chose CSULA was because I liked how there was less credits per semester for the nursing program, meaning it would take me a little longer to finish, but would be less stressful... however, I found out if I accept any financial aid or scholarships that I need to be enrolled in 12 credits or more if I want to keep all of the money. Meaning, I basically will be only taking SLIGHTLY less credits per semester than I would at Long Beach, but instead of taking all nursing classes, I’ll be forced to take classes I don’t even need just to fill up the credits? ? The second reason I chose CSULA was for distance. Now with the coronavirus, everything is online except for clinical once a week. So basically the main 2 reasons I chose LA are out the window. Really wishing I could go back in time and choose CSULB so I could be done with nursing school a semester faster. ? CSULA is a great school... but I had a lot of trouble choosing between LB and LA so I’m pretty upset I chose the one that takes longer and I still need 12+ credits regardless and now that distance is no longer a factor for God knows how long
@ninja1968 I'm so sorry to hear that? I'm sure next year, classes will be in-person and your choice won't all be for nothing!
Although the communication has been a bit iffy, I love CSULB so far! Classes are going well and I absolutely love the faculty. All of my classmates I've met so far have been super nice too. Everyone just helps each other and we're all learning as we go. As far as financial aid, I'm taking less than 12 units and I still received a scholarship and was offered student loans from the school as well.
Again, I'm sorry to hear that you're a bit upset with your choice but hopefully things will look up and you'll come to love CSULA. Wishing you the best! ?
Not sure if anyone will see this, but I'm currently waiting to hear back about Spring 2021 admission and would really like to know from current semester students: how are the clinicals? I've seen things here and there saying trimester cohorts are the only ones really getting time at the hospitals. That's pretty worrying/disheartening
If anyone sees this and can let me know, I'd appreciate it!
@Artemesiac I’m at cal state LA and we are doing clinicals, however out of the 68 of us, about 10 people got stuck with doing sim lab ?. Thank god I didn’t end up in that group. I’m pretty sure all of the Cal State’s in general are figuring out ways to make it work so don’t worry about that. ? hopefully someone who goes to Lb can answer your question

Yes, cal state Long Beach only cares about your pre req GPA and TEAS scores. That’s it.
@ninja1968 Stuck doing sim lab for the entire semester?! I can't imagine how awful that would feel.
Appreciate your input! I live far from CSULB so I really do not want to go trimester, but if it means the difference between hospital experience vs mostly lab sims...?

Yeah basically what had happened was, one of the hospitals decided last minute that they didn’t wanna take students anymore (messed up). So those 10 people who were assigned to that hospital ended up getting stuck with a simulation lab. But all the other students (58 people) got to go to Adventist Health Memorial and Whittier Hospital. Hopefully Spring semester will be different! I think from what I’ve heard LB is doing clinical’s like normal, but yeah, hopefully someone who is actually going to Lb can answer you :). Either way you are going to be getting credit, but I feel you on wanting the real experience rather than a simulation lab. I’m so glad I get to go to the hospital
I'm a trimester student at CSULB who transferred this fall and have been doing clinicals at Long Beach Memorial. The first semester students were all assigned clinicians at either Long Beach Memorial or at the Veterans Hospital. At the start of the semester, I know that some students (primarily 5th semester's needing preceptors) were affected since many hospitals they normally go to stopped allowing students. Not sure if things have changed on that end of things, but main impact I've noticed has been some odd schedules to avoid having too many students in one place (ie. going to the hospital on Sunday morning to preplan for Monday clinicals). Hope that info helps.

Only graduate programs such as direct entry MSN programs want letters of recommendation. There are a few BSN programs that want them, but they tend to private schools.
It's like interviews. Some graduate programs want to them and a few BSN.
Sadly, when it comes to nursing schools, there is a lot of variety on the application process. You really need to research each and every program you are interested in apply.
