CSULA Fall 2016 Nursing (BSN)

Updated:   Published

I realize it may be early, but I wanted to start a thread for the CSULA Fall 2016 nursing program hopefuls. I'm sure we will all have a lot of questions, especially because of the upcoming semester conversion. I have plenty of questions about application deadlines, volunteer hours, TEAS, etc. It will be nice to have a community where we can ask each other questions and offer advice. Eventually we can share stats, and we may even end up in the same cohort!

Haha me too, i had a really hard time deciding but i finally made my decision. CSULA is only a 7 min commute for me using Fasttrak in the morning. I picked CSULB over CSULA for multiple reasons:

1. Trimester. It isnt lottery. A lot more people want semester than trimester but if too many people want trimester, then they need to move some to semester.

2. I applied to LB my senior year in high school but I didn't make the cut since my GPA was at 3.3. Now that I have the chance to, I would love to attend LB even though it's a further commute.

3. I'm not attending CSULA because I feel like standards are too low there university wise. Not the nursing program. The nursing program is pretty much cmpetitive. But the school as a whOle has a 65% acceptance rate and I don't feel like it lives up to a "university"standard in my book. Parking is horrible as well. I am currently a student at CSULA and it would be nice to explore a whole another campus that's more competitive.

If you attend CSULB, we can always carpool, so LMK. :)

Thanks for your reply! I really want the trimester so it's good thing you mentioned it isn't lottery. I've gone to LB twice and LA once. I like the overall feel of the LB campus much better. I probably should do an extensive tour of both schools :D Regarding the acceptance rate, you make a really good pooint. I googled LB's and it was 36.1% last 2014.

Yeah, it's still arounder the 30s. Makes me more proud of myself. Plus CSULB is #5 in California.

Just to get this thread active, which science prepreqs did you guys find the easiest and the hardest? Why?

For me the easiest was Physiology because it ties everything up from Chem and Anatomy. Anatomy was a little tough because all we did was label and didn't really learn as much their function as a whole.

Hardest for me was probably Chem, I just can't stand Math. I'm currently taking Micro and I'm expecting it to be the hardest one í ½í¸‚

Any micro lovers in here, please encourage me! í ½í¸‚í ½í¸

I LOVED microbiology! I loved memorizing all of the pathogens and what diseases they caused, the immune defenses of the body, DNA and RNA stuff... every week was a new chapter that felt like it did not relate to the past lecture, like it stood on their own but once you get towards the end, they all tie together and you get this huge lightbulb in your head. At least it was like that for me. It also helped that I had a really good professor. I prefer it over physio haha

I preferred physiology over anatomy, only because I love puzzles so I looked at physio like a puzzle since one thing could be the cause of many different things. Microbiology was my absolute favorite pre req though, I loved learning about microbes, and the different types of diseases. However, I became a germaphobe after that class, and now I have to have hand sensitizer on deck lol [emoji23]

The thread's been kinda dead, right?!

Anyway, for me Anatomy was way easier than Phys. Phys wasn't my favorite. The professor had a really busy semester when I took it, and kinda slacked on our class. I feel like I didn't learn enough. Chem was easy. I kinda liked the math part. Again I had a prof. that was a little scatter-brained. I'm currently taking Micro, and so far it's my FAVORITE!!! The professor is awesome. Her teaching is very linear, and it just makes sense! And it's so interesting. Definitely my favorite of the pre-reqs. The lab part is just eh. But I really like the lecture!

@EddyJ and @FutureNurseglen ..... share your points with us! :D

I found anatomy the hardest just because we learned a lot of new terms. physio was much easier because now we are just applying our knowledge to see how things function. micro and chem was pretty easy. I guess it depends on your professor too. I took all my classes at ELAC

hmm considering that the only B I've gotten since my time at my community college was physiology, I'm going to have to say that that was he hardest for me:dead:

Anatomy was alright, juts a lot of memorization and I LOVED microbiology as well. The teacher was awesome and even recommended me for a microbiology tutoring job at my school which i did for a semester. I just enjoyed learning about different pathogens and their mechanisms.

Same! Anatomy and Phys were easily forgettable but Micro is my favorite! Almost changed my major and now I'm doing a micro internship so in the future, I'm planning on being an NP probably with HIV specialty just to ease my love for micro since I realized I don't want to be a full on Microbiologist.

I loved chemistry most, the labs were so fun! Especially the last one where we got to extract DNA from fruits and vegetables:). It also didn't hurt that I had a great professor. Microbiology was my second favorite. Learning about all the microorganisms and growing and identifying bacteria was really interesting and challenging. Anatomy was ok, just a lot of memorization. I probably liked physio the least. I found the labs kinda boring compared to the rest of them and it seemed just a lot of repeat of chemistry and anatomy, though I did enjoy learning about things like action potential and how muscles actually work, etc.

Well, I think CSULA is closed today for Cesar Chavez day, so I doubt we will hear back today lol. :)
