CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

Published

How many here has applied for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at CSULA?

I know it is a little bit early to talk about this, but I just submitted all of my grades, TEAS scores (ATI sends them to CSULA SON for you), and notification of health care work experience (dental assistant) from an employer.

It has been a long and anxious wait till April/May for letters of acceptance to come in, so I hope this thread can help everyone who is dealing with the same anxiety and stress that we are all dealing with.

So If anyone would like to share their overall "points" score, or questions regarding pre-reqs TEAS etc. I would be alright to share all of you mine, and answer some questions that I might know.

Thanks and godspeed everyone!

Ms.chia...I recieved that info from CSULA....All stats are available in the nursing department office...Some websites may not be reliable, hopefuly the info CSULA gives their students is accurate... =)

Hey csulagirl07, do you have the stats from the nursing office? I would call, but it's Saturday and they're closed. =/

I actually find it somewhat surprising that ADN programs at the Community College require you to have completed ALL prerequisites whereas BSN programs like CSULA and LB allows an "in-progress" course...

...No I don't...I have only spoke to them, but as far as a paper or a listing no sorry....Your best bet would be to call monday Sorry I wish I could be of more help...

@ Krazy, I applaud you for your efforts describing the advantages/disadvantages of the BSN/ADN programs. I like how you set the foundation of the ADN practically going through critical thinking, college math, then the Accelerated BSN year. Because, what's more important than money is time. Time is such a valuable resource as you get older, so thank you for your emphasized input. In all honesty, I just want the social life that's associated with the 4-year instead of just commuting to college.

It's funny that you mentioned the accelerated nursing program that require no pre-requisites. A couple of my friends labeled it as "buying your way in," then for the school to churn out as much graduates for profit (a.k.a diploma mill). I'm seeing all of these "for profit/private" colleges opening up offering nursing degrees and I'm beginning to believe that a nursing degree is not valuable as it used to because of the education inflation. Of course, I'm generalizing, but I've seen some nursing students who do not know the simple concepts of math (multiplication). As long as you have the money, your able to get in. I could be wrong in my statements and just criticizing based on my own opinion, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

About the person you know going into $60,000 worth of debt. I think it's a ridiculous price to pay to become a nurse. I would rather just study Accounting at USC for that price and begin working at a big four accounting firm.

I'm also fearful of new grads not finding any jobs due to the economic decline and hospitals wanting experienced nurses. I've heard numerous stories of new grads relocating to Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona etc. to seek out work due to the fact that the state of California wants experience. I seriously considered about the military, but I'm not so sure.

I am a student at CSULA, since ,07...I applied to the Basic Generic Program in the Fall '09 and recieved a rejection Letter at the begining of July. I spoke to the dept. & found out that I was 1 point away from being on a "wait-list". It was ok because I didnt pass MICRO that year, but i have since taken it again and recieved a B. (I applied for academic renewal which erases the previous score and replaces it with the new grade) I would not agree she is the hardest teacher, she just requires alot of work and you must put in time to recieve a good grade, the class is actually pretty interesting. I am applying in the Fall 2011, for the Fall 2012 class. ( I did temporarily changed my major to Rehab. Services in order to not waste time& now before i graduate i am trying one last time&hopefully will get in to the program with a double major...)....My points had been 19, but now i am applying with a 26.

I have met with people in the nursing department and last year the lowest score accepted was a 20. Anyways good luck&dont be discouraged, you can always apply again....especially since CSULA is the hardest school to get into for nursing and is the top 10 in the country ... =)

I am pretty well informed of the nursing program so if u have any questions go for it...

Definitely not the hardest the nursing program!

They allow volunteer/healthcare experience to make up for points you would have obtained by doing better in classes or whatever.

I think harder schools that go off academics (i.e. CSULB) are harder to get into. IF you do bad in a class or get a C, well guess what? you better have all A's lol. Where as if you apply to CSULA, if you get a couple of C's healthcare exp will save you. plus oddly enough, there is no math req. at least not for admission. Plus micro, which is one of the "big 3" is not considered science/pre req GPA, only overall...weird. So no i think, that people who have extra-circular activities will make up for points lost in the academic portion of the application. Not that its bad, but I would put more emphasis on academics over, lets just say volunteering or being a CNA (i know it becomes handy later on, i too am a CNA)

As far as them being top 10 in the country, um, no lol. Maybe the masters program but not their BSN program!

Well I am with you (or against you LOL:p) as I am applying this Fall 2011 for a spot in fall 2012.

As for statistics, do they post them up at the nursing office and not online? ugh what about all of us transfer students that can't get over there? Oh well I have plenty of time til application time, plus I don't know if you guys know but if i have EVERYTHING done (micro and speech plus all the other crap) does it look better? they don't have to wait for any grades the only "in progress" stuff will be o-chem (i am applying to CSULB and CSUSB for fall 2012 as well) and a math course.

thanks for listening to my rant:yawn:

any info is welcomed. just pm me!

Minnie02...you can apply as long as english is completed by the deadline(sometime at the end of winter qtr I believe. Applications should comeout first week in september&due dec 1st usually or 2nd (not sure)

make sure you READ the application very carefully and stay on top of deadlines... =)

we should start a new thread once we apply in Fall 11

BeachBeadhead....we can go back and forth on this all day....but at the end all that matters if we get into the program....the only points where I will definitely disagree with u is CNA wont necessarily save us if we have C's in classes & Academics make up 27 of the possible points if you count the TEAS, also I know that other schools that base of Nacademics" will accept students with good letters of recomendation....but enough of that...honestly none of it matters...we just need to get accepted LOL...

ok sooo you being done doesn't really do anything since they don't check until the deadline...Also I HIGHLY reccomend you walk in your app. Many students mail them and the SON NEVER RECEIVE THEM....better to be safe than sorry....Also don't forget to submit transcripts after you take chem.....As far as stats call the office I have not found them online... GooD Luck to the 3 of us Applying in Fall 11... =)

on another note have any of you received an acceptance letter yet?

Hello! Thank you so much. For the work experience, I have worked in a healthcare company for 3.5 years and also I have had direct patient care for Dialysis patients. I have 200 + hours dealing with dialysis patients. Rite now preparing to the State exam of the dialysis technician. Would this help as healthcare experience/voluntering? After i get my license I m planning to work as a dialysis technician.

One more question, for this nursing program, how long is the program for?

I am not sure if your work experience will count because it has tobe direct contact with patients I believe...As far as working with patients since you were not actually employed yet you will definitely get volunteer credit for that..... =)...any questions about that section call the SON Advisement office and they can give you a more accurate answer. The program itself is about 3years.

I just got word from ---- at the Advisement Office that the letters of acceptance will go out next week. That's really cutting it close to the enrollment confirmation deadline of May 2nd. Anyway, wait another week :-(

Thanks! Yeah those hours would go voluntering as i m not a dialysis tech yet. But, once i get my license, I will be working as Dialysis tech, so that would help. But I m working in a health care company for 3.5 yr ( employed in that company). I will def ask them about the credits.

thank you!

BeachBedHead...I wasn't arguing either&not upset.(thats what i hate about message boards; it has to be carely written and even then the interpretation of the other person may be not at all what the writer wanted to relay)...anyways..I just hope the best for everyone...&i just think that none of the small details of opinion really matter.....All that matters is a successfull application.!...good luck to all of you...& thats great hopefully you all get good news in the mail next week... =)
