CSU Los Angeles School of Nursing (CSULA Fall 2011)

Published

How many here has applied for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at CSULA?

I know it is a little bit early to talk about this, but I just submitted all of my grades, TEAS scores (ATI sends them to CSULA SON for you), and notification of health care work experience (dental assistant) from an employer.

It has been a long and anxious wait till April/May for letters of acceptance to come in, so I hope this thread can help everyone who is dealing with the same anxiety and stress that we are all dealing with.

So If anyone would like to share their overall "points" score, or questions regarding pre-reqs TEAS etc. I would be alright to share all of you mine, and answer some questions that I might know.

Thanks and godspeed everyone!

yes but alas, i did not apply....

for all you who applied last (oct? i know it needs to be in before dec 1) any application tips? how did you condense all your stuff and send it in? or did you do it by hand?

do you just send a big yellow envelope with the application, transcripts, volunteer/healthcare exp and cert. mail it?

I cannot wait till result for CSULA comes out! Good luck to everyone here!

BeachBedhead, for CSULA yes I put everything in that big yellow envelop and mailed it out..Application, Transcript, Healthcare experience. Then I had to send out my transcript to CSULA admission when they asked me.

Whoa, I discovered this site way too late.... You see I don't understand this: Microbiology and Speech are called "prerequisites" to the SON, but they are not counted in the selection ranking. Does this mean if I already completed both courses they won't count towards my prerequisite GPA (a maximum of 10 points) but they will count towards my overall GPA (a maximum of 5 points)? That's not fair

So what if.... One takes the 6 prerequisite courses and gets an overall GPA of 3.73 for a total of 8 points out of 10 with an overall GPA of 3.65 for a total of 4 points out of 5 and the typical TEAS test of 9 out of 12. That's a total of 21 points not counting volunteer work. According to this site, that score won't cut it.

Now, same scenario but add Micro and Speech with A's in both.... That only adds one more point for a total of 22 points (still too low to qualify). But if they were counted, the overall score would boost to 24 (Prerequisite GPA of 3.8 plus overall GPA of 3.71). Huge difference there....

And what about after the selection process. If someone is accepted and their Micro and Speech grades are passing but not great (hurting their overall GPA) does the school then revoke the admission and give it to someone else? Seems messy to me.

All other schools count Micro and Speech in their GPA criteria. Why not CSULA??? Fortunately for me, this is NOT my predicament, but it could so easily have been.

yeah I definitely see where you are coming from, But rules are there for a reason.

in your scenario 1, if that ever happened, I'm sure that it would be a "waitlist" case (if they are doing a wait list this year), and if the person does volunteer work, it would be a 23 (which is a competitive standing).

I think the reason why they have that rule, if it so happens that they fail either course, their admission would be revoked and the position would be given to someone on a wait list.

Again, this is only my speculation, I can't prove that it is a fact. But if I was admissions committee, and I want to find a way to utilize a waitlist, I would do so this way.

Also, having this rule, it gives an "equal playing field" for CSULA students to compete equally to transfer students, because micro on this campus is proctored by one of the hardest instructors; there was a 60% fail rate (c- and below) this year out of 200 students.

And yes, because of this, and along with the "GPA CC vs CSU factor" there was a discrepancy last year in the number of transfer students to CSULA student ratio accepted.

35 CC:15 CSULA!

Being a CSULA student, that is not fair, it would be "just" for CSULA to have consideration over their students, due to the fact that the GPA scale is different in community colleges vs CSU and UCs

(in community colleges, a 90-100% in a course is a 4.0 and CSU's 90-93 is a 3.7 and 94-100% is a 4.0).

so if a person in a community college gets 90's in all pre reqs, that person would get a 4.0; but if a person in CSULA or any CSU or UC get the same grades (all 90's) in all pre-reqs, that person would get a 3.7

So if you want an answer in why they don't count micro as a "selecting" factor, it is because the proctor at our campus does not grade on the same terms as other instructors at other schools.

Transfers who apply to the CSULA SON generic BSN program are lucky- transfer students STILL are eligible to apply.

other CSU's like CSU Fullterton, the school did not even accept transfer student applications this term!

So I hope that answers all of your questions- it might not seem fair for a transfer, but I see to it as CSULA's way of taking into consideration of their students.

An A is an A whether it is 93 or 90

I attended a Csu and got a 92 and received an 4.0

So, I highly doubt a 92 at CSULA is not a 4.0

That is unfair and lame lol

it depends on the teacher, but most instructors who teach these pre requisite classes a 94 is an A and a 90-93 is an A-

and your right it is unfair.

Oh. That helped clear it up lol. Yea the science pre req only is 88%-100% is an A.

We don't get pulses or minus. That is science only though

It depends on the school and also the instructor. At UCI the scale is + and - but for the CC I'm also taking classes at, I got a 89% in Physio and OChem (taken at the same time too last semester) and got a B for both courses. Blah. It was the policy of the CC to not have a +/- scale and there is nothing the instructors could do.

For CSULB they actually calculate your Microbio grade as a "C" if you are in-progress. It really hurt my points since I'm taking it now and probably got denied due to my GPA for it. It assumes you will get at least a "C" and if you don't, they revoke your admission status as well/waitlist position. I assume that's the same idea for CSULA but more so as another factor on who is on the wait list and who doesn't get in and so forth.

I'm always anxious to check the mail! Anyone get anything so far from CSULA?

hahaha, no, nothing in the mail.

I know it can come any day, since last year, people posted up their results on the late teens early 20's of april!

No letters on anything like turning in grades, teas scores and such?

Back in February I received a letter of rejection due to low TEAS score (I scored a 39 in the Math on my first try because I didn't think Math/Science counted, so I goofed on those sections). But realizing later that a score below 40 in any section would disqualify me, I retook it a month later at Rio Hondo College. They told me that my scores would be sent directly to CSULA and not to worry about it.

Well, I got the rejection letter and as you can imagine I was shocked; I realized that the SON did not receive my second TEAS scores. So I came personally to the Advisement Office and handed my latest TEAS scores to Monica Ling, who apologized for the mix up and promptly put me back in the pile. At that time she told me that accepted candidates should hear something around mid April. So I'm guessing NEXT WEEK will be D-DAY....

thank you for the valuable information.

I guess there is no word on how many people will be selected until the letters of acceptance are sent?

I am a student at CSULA, since ,07...I applied to the Basic Generic Program in the Fall '09 and recieved a rejection Letter at the begining of July. I spoke to the dept. & found out that I was 1 point away from being on a "wait-list". It was ok because I didnt pass MICRO that year, but i have since taken it again and recieved a B. (I applied for academic renewal which erases the previous score and replaces it with the new grade) I would not agree she is the hardest teacher, she just requires alot of work and you must put in time to recieve a good grade, the class is actually pretty interesting. I am applying in the Fall 2011, for the Fall 2012 class. ( I did temporarily changed my major to Rehab. Services in order to not waste time& now before i graduate i am trying one last time&hopefully will get in to the program with a double major...)....My points had been 19, but now i am applying with a 26.

I have met with people in the nursing department and last year the lowest score accepted was a 20. Anyways good luck&dont be discouraged, you can always apply again....especially since CSULA is the hardest school to get into for nursing and is the top 10 in the country ... =)

I am pretty well informed of the nursing program so if u have any questions go for it...
