CSN RN program

I tried very hard to meet with an advisor and all i got was that weirdo guy who stands in the lobby and deals out advise to pre rn students- he said he could answer all my questions but most of what he told me was hearsay. i honestly am beginning to think that no one there knows what they are doing. or else they just think that students are idiots and when they have questions it's because they have dumb questions that anyone can answer. (good thing i've been told VERY good things about the program itself) when i went into the building the other day for whatever reason i forget why - well there was a woman there instead of that guy and she told me to register for an advisment session. however - all the advisement sessions are booked till september at this point so i just kinda snuck in and asked a few questions anyhow. (ask the woman in the office that's across the desk from where u pick up flyers for program requirements. she's a blonde haired lady - she knows what's up). so maybe just try and sneak in and ask her like on monday. but no, to my knowledge, u do not HAVE to have an advisement session - or else i'm not getting in cuz i havn't had one. which is why i have all these questions on this board :). - but also if u do want to register for advisement sessions all u have to have is that like hour or so long orientation program completed - and they offer that every week.

Thanks. I don't really have any questions to ask anybody I just wanted to make sure you didn't HAVE to see somebody and yeah I did that health orientation program like a year ago since I had to do that before I was allowed to register for any classes. I agree with you about it seems no one there knows what they are doing. I continually get the run around by the staff and no one will answer my questions when I do have them. I emailed the director of the RN program asking for some kind of guide as to the scores of people that get accepted in the RN program and she was just like sorry I don't know as it changes every time. I was lucky to get to even take the NLN because originally I was simply told it was full, nobody mentioned anything about being a standby, I found that out weeks later and then only had a week to study, I was pretty annoyed especially when I only have 1 pre-req left to take, the nevada politics course so I was really wanting to apply in September.

i think though that they kind of have to be that way because they get SO many students who say they want to do the RN program and i think seriously, maybe 1 of every 10 students who goes to an orientation for nursing actually ends up even applying. so it's hard for them to know who to take seriously and with budget cuts there is probably a shortage of admin in the program. thank goodness they are not cutting seats for students. so i forgive them for that kinda thing. cuz actually i've looked at it and when u consider how much money UNLV gets for it's nursing program and their graduation rates are not the best...i mean it's pretty awesome that this school is able to maintain the state highest NCLEX pass rates. so yeah i forgive then for their poor admin. i also was really suprised at how many standbys they let in on Aug 2nd. i think i got the 2nd to last spot for the test when i registered. it was a pretty packed room. and the guy sitting at the front kept putting his head in front of the clock so i couldn't see the time left. that drove me nuts!

Yeah that's great they aren't cutting seats in the program. I actually moved to Vegas less than a year ago so I really don't know that much about the program but after what you say it seems like its a good program. I just recently found this site and not knowing many other students at CSN its hard with the sucky admin since I had nobody else to ask questions lol. But that's kinda what i've been heard the admin don't tell you anything as a way of weeding out the non serious applicants.

I was surprised I got in to take the NLN as well. I arrived at 6.30am and there was already two people who got there before me and then ended up letting in all of the standbys anyway so I don't know if lots of people didn't show up or they ordered extra exams since it's the last time they are going to offer the NLN.

well welcome to vegas! i take it from your name u moved here from austrailia? when i took the CNA course there were RN students at my clinical sight and there were 3 aussies in that clinical out of the 8 students - which is kinda a lot considering i've never met an austrailian here in the states. are aussies really big into nursing or something?

i actually just moved back to las vegas - it's not so bad here. not the best but if u graduated a las vegas high school its really easy to get grants, scholarships etc here in nevada. i initially thought for sure i would go to UNLV but after meeting with their advisors and talking to some of their nursing students it just seemed like a really bad idea. CSN has quite possibly some of the dumbest people i've ever met in it's student body - that being said - it also has a lot of hard working and very bright students. and to my understanding it's the staple school for vegas nurses. so yeah...hopefully i'll get in and not have to apply out of state. and so long as they get your math credits transfered in time - maybe i'll see ya next spring! (fingers crossed) :up:

Wow 3 aussies?? i never find any aussies over here. I don't know if we're big on nursing. I got accepted into the nursing program in australia a couple of years ago but at that point it wasn't something I wanted to do so i turned it down. if i had accepted it i wouldn't be living here and would have had to give up my residency. Lets just say i'm glad i didn't accept lol.

Glad to know CSN is a great program, I had heard some good things about it from my step dad who is the new ER Director at Sunrise hospital so he talks to current students/new grads from the CSN program.

Yes I'm keeping my fingers crossed about my transcript. Getting very nervous it's not going to get done in time. Might have to check up on it next week if i don't hear anything.

Hey all:::

WOW! 30 points total, eh?? that's a guaranteed seat! the first & last time I saw an actual advisor was feb. '08, we talked for about 20 minutes (i think)... anyway, she told me if u want a guaranteed seat, u need at least between 28-30 points total, but this is BASED on the "safe side", 'coz a lot of people were/are applying w/ 4.0 GPA's, have done the extra point courses AND have fairly scored well on the NLN. The highest total points one can score is 35 (it's on that one sheet u can download from the CSN nursing website page). She (advisor) said that, no one scores a perfect 35, so in reality, highest would be 30. It really depends on how many people apply for the program and what the average total points are (meaning the cutoff # does change), but CSN nursing dept. do favor ----->>> The higher the points, the better (as a rule of thumb). Also, if u get accepted and for some reason u back out or don't reply, then they go to their "Alternate list". Whoever's name on that list that gets picked and accepts the spot, gets in. It's not a waiting list, it's more like a safety net for them, so that, they have a close total # of accepted applicants to the # of nurses they're suppose to accept every semester.

By the way, got my NLN results friday... I've got 26 points total, I do hope I get in.... (fingers crossing)... congrats to everyone who did well on the NLN... goodluck everyone!! :wink2: :nurse:

Man now i'm really worried about my transcript coming through in time if 30 points guarantees a seat. Congrats on having 26 points though that's pretty good.

i graduated from CCSN now CSN , and i can tell you all .. it's worth all the admin troubles you go through... it is a awesome program , i just loved it ,,

i went through the bridge program and loved the teachers and clincals ,, they are really the best teachers you could have to become a RN... there are many programs in las vegas.. but CSN is tried and true for boards ,,,

i passed boards first time w/ 75 questions... so did many of my classmates..... our class nailed boards .. because of the way the program is structured,,, you will be a awesome RN if you take this program....

i recommend this program to anyone who wants to be a RN..

i hope you all get in and keep me posted on how your schooling is going....

Question...for those of you who took Micro at CSN. My DARS form is saying my science portion isn't complete because i have no grade for the micro lab. I assumed you just got the one grade. Did you get a separate grade listed on csn site for both lecture and lab??

Don't worry about that, mine still says in progress for Micro and I took it 3 or 4 semester ago!! I was still accepted in the program for Fall 08. Your transcript, which you have to submit with the DARS, will have your completed grade for the class.

Alright thank you. I have to go and talk to somebody anyway about a different class so i'll probably just print everything out and take it along to make sure it's all ok.
