CSN RN Program Details. Spring 09 Beyound!

U.S.A. Nevada

Published

I wanted to start a thread that would give general info for those interested in the RN program at CSN in Nevada. I got some good info from reading peoples posts here at allnurses.com and thought since that I have put in an application I could post on here and help people in the future who have questions.

Starters...People who are interested in the program starting from scratch.

I would definetly recommend going to one of the orientations first off. It is about an hour they go over the details and they get you in the system. This will be important when you decide to set up a meeting to meet with an advisor at the K building later on, you cannot set one up without attending the orientation.

Course requirements. Although i have no experiance as an advisor i could say get one of the program packets that state what is required. I can say right off bat that the GPA requirement is based off those classes listed in the pre-requisets and do not include the othe general requirements although you do get points off of some of those.(Science classes allowed three tries passing or highest of the three!). Points are given for certain classes the most of which is ten for Bio 224 ANP II. Please get a packet though available at the K building Charleston campus not sure about Cheyenne.

Third at some point better sooner then later sign up for the TEAS examination. if you are not happy with your score you can retake it after a certain number of months. Taking this early while you are working on course requirements will give you time to retake it and possibly get a better score. Also this test is used at some other universities take it you want to pursue a bachelors somewhere else. You have to pay in order to sign up for a date to be tested. This is Part of acceptance into program and you also get points for this. Same test they have in California and I guess other places here in the states.(like 30 dollars sign up at the cashier, and yes they have review books for this one!)

Application process there are deadlines and as for right now they are twice a year. They have full-time and part time schedules and accept 125 for the full-time track. I wouldn't recommend applying until you have done some of the stuff listed before hand i.e talking to a counselor taking the examination completed classes listed in the requirements packet. You can download the app on the schools website , go find it there.

I am hoping this info will be helpfull to others well basically because its the kinda info I was interested in and had to gather myself least I could do is take this info and help others like me.

Further info I have applied and am also waiting for the call on the 29th like many others I am applying with 28 points to elliminate other questions here after because I know how curious everyone can be after all we are all human right.

Good luck on your phone call on the 29th.... that was nice of you to do this for everyone applying..... hopefully soon you'll be signing RN after your name....

this is a awesome program and i loved it..... it is worth the wait...

thanks kizzy... one thing I have learned is that there are other decent people out there working on bettering themselves. for the most part these people have been there for me as well and it's part of the whole deal to give back and be useful for others.

A little more info for the education requirements.

Biol 189 difficult to sign up for. Find out when your day for priority registration online is before hand so you get a spot. Also taking ANP along with micro is very difficult unless you manage your time. Consider that before doing such a thing. Anp alone can be very demanding along with micro it will be hard to balance. I had to make some changes in my life to get a handle on a lot of the classes. personal stuff work etc etc can hinder your study time but then again there are those few who can manage, just some advice from my end!

Also upon applying you will need both a limited entry application and the nursing program app. both available on the schools website. please find that on your own not hard to look on the site. Make sure you include all documents(transcripts, dars evaluations, liscences , teas scores, proof of work in a hospital etc etc.) when you turn them into the limited entry office also in building k. make sure you sign all areas need to be signed read the applications carefully. meeting with the health program adviser is also a good idea when you feel confident you have completed many of the requirements. she will evaluate your transcripts answer additional questions and let you know what you have to do to get in!!!

please keep me posted on when you recieve the phone call... it's worth it...

yeah i also applied for the spring with 27 points. kinda nervous to find out if i got in or not. if i dont so be it, if i do great! also AP1 and Micro was not that difficult taking together. it all depends on your professors and what they want out of each student. well good luck to all the applied.

Update: Orientation Before/After

As for being accepted, I recieved a call sometime on the day they said they would call. The lady only gave limited information(the day to pick up the packet and the day of orientation!). When you get the packet you have to sign a paper that says you accept the offer. There are a few counselors on hand that give you a quick rundown on dates deadlines and whats needed. The most important of which was to bring reciept of payment from the d building for drug testing. The packet must be completed right before we start clinicals at the begining of the semester. Some of the things that are required are..Immunizations,proof of insurance, cpr cert(american heart ass.),drug test, physical and BG check!

Orientation, was a really hectic day. Teachers come in discuss topics, go over curriculum, text books, vaccs, financial aide, uniform req. etc etc. Honestly I could not pay a minutes attention the whole day I was really distracted despite being in the front row. At the begining you have to sign in and get another packet also select a number for scheduling purposes from a ceramic bunny. The most important and hectic thing about this day is selecting your schedule. Schedules are pre-sorted into groups on sheets of paper on a wall with just call numbers. I ran down the wall writting down the corresponding numbers for each class in each group to see if i could get the teachers i wanted!I didnt even pay attention to class times as i was more concerned with getting good picks. Each pre arranched schedule has a sign up sheet and as your number is called you sign up for the schedule you want. As the numbers progress each group will fill up so I would hope to get good number on this day! Also you have to get your form somewhere in between for the drug screening at quest and sign upo to visit your counselor to make sure you have completed your packet! For orientation bring h20 and a sandwich!!!

ya it was pretty crazy yesterday with a lot of info, but the wayi look at things are if i pass, i pass if i fail, i fail. really not to worried about the work that is needed to be done either. only thing i didnt like is how all the teachers looked at me weird cuz i have tattoos on my body. just because i have tattoos doesnt mean im a moron. its like they were watching me more and sizing me up in a matter of hours and thinking this guy wont last. oh well goodluck to all.

Sorry you felt that way, you shouldn't feel like you were being judged on your appearance. It should motivate you to prove them wrong!! I was a little disappointed they weren't more specific about uniforms, it seems they gave us such few details that we'd be forced to go that place they mentioned.

People are probally more curious then anything. As far as people go that can be an advantage because once they see what a great person you are they realize how stupid they where to assume. Peeps do me like that also. Plus think of how far you come we all deserve are time here and by the end of the program our lives will be different and we will become completely different people.

that orientation was crazy!!... it was too long for me . . . the whole time that i was there made me think about food and sleep. i think i'm a little addish, 'coz the orientation made me restless. . . although, i appreciate the info they gave us, but they should've given us more detail and direct to the point. the speakers should have given more instructions on how high/low the patches should be put on the sleeves, there's also some type of glue on the back of those patches (what's the purpose, since they're going to be sewed on the left sleeve anyway, right?)... on immunizations, i'm a little fuzzy on it (hepa vaccines do affect the tb skin results and there's some kind of time frame?) and those people who spoke about e-books/e-select or something, spoke too much and all the computer thing sounded more complicated than it really is. personally, i've done and used software (that came w/ books) and online classes on my pre-reqs and they're not that hard. speakers probably scared some people off?? .....

on the option (schedule we signed up for), we're pretty much stuck with it 'til may next year, right? we can't change or trade w/ anyone? just wonderin.... i wished i got the course catalog before i signed up for anything, geez.... and i really wish i had a sandwich from subway! sigh....

Yeah I agree with you, I felt a few of the speakers went on for far too long and the the stuff I felt was important they barely even touched on.

I believe those uniform patches are meant to be ironed on which kind of sucks because then you can't bleach those white uniforms if they get dirty.

As for immunizations: the immunizations that interfere with the TB skin test are MMR and Varicella. You can get Hep B vaccine anytime without it interfering. So what I did was get my first hep b shot and then the TB skin tests and now that i've completed that i'm going to go ahead with the mmr and varicella. if you get the mmr and varicalla before you have a tb skin test you have to wait a minimum of 28 days before doing the tb skin test so to make things easier it's best to do the tb skin test first. I hope that helped.

Yeah I didn't look at the schedule beforehand either but it wouldn't really have helped me since i was number 108 and by the time it was my turn there was only like 4 options left.

Unfortunately you are stuck with the schedule and can't trade with anyone. Sew the patches on, the sticky backing doesn't work too good. I set the patches in place by ironing first and then sewed them on from there. My patches are placed about 1 inch from the top of the arm and they look good there. Good luck!!! How exciting!!!
