Nurses Professionalism

Published

So I became sick (cold or god knows what-np fever but a lot of mucus, runny nose, weakness etc) yesterday. I was assigned a new patient for today (home health) at my part time job (I have two home health jobs). So I called my patient family told them that I'm too weak and dizzy to drive long distance (it is far away), the family was very understanding, then called my boss who totally ate my alive, she said that being sick is not an excuse and nurses dont get sick and that the doctor will be extremely upset, she also knows I'm three moths pregnant and I refuse to jeopardize my as well as my baby health/life. Of course I didnt tell her that, I just apologized, then she said that now she will have to go to see the patient, I wanted to tell her so badly "Excuse me s... happens and I drive long distances every day so your crown wont fall of out your head if you do this once, for you really sick and pregnant employee, who has been a loyal worker. I wanted to tell her that that my health is more important than job and the patient is not even critical, he is at home..I just dont understand lack of compassion for sick nurses.

anyway I hope for your sake you wont get sick to the point when you too afraid to drive long distance and someone will laugh at you.

Honestly, if you are not some one who abuses your call in privileges, I don't care if you were calling in because you just didn't feel like working that day, I don't think you deserve to get a guilt trip.

I never call off.

of course you have a right to call in sick.

and your boss has a legitimate right to feel irritated, too, considering you gave no notice.

hope you feel better.

I understand that but I'm upset about how she said it, she didnt say " oh I'm mad because you didnt give me a notice but nurses dont have the right to get sick, in business world no one cares if you are sick, even when I apologized she still said that apology is not enough

How many times you hear nurses are threatened or force to come in to work with fevers of 101 (!)? This is totally unacceptable, totally and I refuse to accept it.

Wait till she gets upset that your baby is sick and you have to stay home with he/she... and if you are this dramatic over a 101 fever and a cold at 3 months, I can't imagine what you will be like in July at 7 months. Just saying... hope you feel better

Never. Not once have I heard of a nurse threatened or forced to come in to work with a fever of 101. Never.

I'm not saying that never happens, but I've never seen it happen. Not even in the crappiest nursing homes I've worked in.

Besides, in your OP, you said you were afebrile.

Again, I am sorry you aren't feeling well today, and I never criticized you or anyone else for getting sick.

This comment is not just worth replying, sorry.

OP

I think you are going to have to learn that if you are going to call in you are going to upset someone. Ill calls usually mean more work for others, which of course no one is ever happy about. So I say just grow some thicker skin, call in when you absolutely have to and don't take it personally when it doesn't make others happy.

how about if I develop a fever? Did you know that overheating can cause birth defects?\

Are you joking?
