CRNA Hates me

Specialties Operating Room

I am a new grad (graduated and got rn in july), but I worked on the floor as an LPN for a year. My love has been OR ever since I was about 6 years old. Now I have been working in Amb Surg since August and have recently started training in OR on days that AS case load isn't too full. Anywhooo, there is a CRNA who hates me. He says he does not want me in OR because I do not have enough experience and he tries to do his best to make me feel 6 inches tall whenever he gets the chance and is trying to "run" me off. I can handle strong personalities, (I used to be a prison guard), but this guy makes me so nervous I can not even think straight. Any suggestions on how to cope? I know I do not have a lot of experience as a nurse, but I want my career to revolve around surgery, so is he right that I should give up on OR for now or am I right in that now is the best time for me to learn OR?

I think what Shodobe means is that sometimes anesthesia staff(CRNAs and docs) seem to have a superiority complex. This CRNA giving the OP a hard time should not have any say in the training/hiring/firing of new OR staff. They need to focus on their job, and let the circulator do theirs.

Most of our CRNAs are awesome, some of the anesthesiologists on the other hand are obnoxious and talk down to both the CRNAs and the OR staff. My feeling on this is that my badge does not read "Anesthesia's B**ch" :nono:and I will not allow myself to be intimidated by them.

I've found that sometimes, you just have to confront the person bullying you. Most bullies are wimps, when it comes down to it.

I completely agree....some people have a little more knowledge and/or power, and they let it get to their head. The CRNA in the OP is on a power trip, and should be put in his place. Is is not his OR, and he has no right to kick someone out who is there to learn. If you aren't endangering the patient, and it didn't sound that way at all, then I would fight it. Like Witchy says, most bullies are wimps if confronted.

Many professional nurses are trending toward BSN requirement. Maybe that's his issue, not you. Keep showing your experience...and keep your head up. During my first week in the OR I had a CRNA to tell that I "was going to be a glorified secretary. Why ever would you want to leave the ICU? You'll be taking care of doctor's instead of patients." Now I always make a point to go overboard with him. I overemphasize that I "taking care of my patient". hehe!

Ummm HI nurses in the Bay Area clear OVER 100,000 easily.....and just because one nurse makes more than another DOES NOT mean that they are unequal.

So you make over $100,000 a year as an OR nurse? Because that is what a CRNA makes. I know that from doing research on CRNA's (on this site and others) and from personally knowing a CRNA.

Also, keep in mind that the CRNA was an ICU nurse. Lots of ICU nurses are arrogant to being with.

Many nurses act like they are better than a CNA, etc. So, yes, there are some CRNA's that think they are better than us 'staff OR nurses'. :uhoh3:

I know some housekeepers who act like they are better than nurses. :lol2:

Ok I have to bed the differ, I am an CV surgical ICU nurse and I am def. not arrogant.....arrogance is scary! Confidence on the other hand makes for a good nurse!... just my take on it.

lol...very true, very true.

:nurse: G'day

We in Australia would not tolerate any type of verbal abuse and given how this person makes you feel, human resources need to deal with it.

things are a bit different in US..at least where I'm working...OR is a closed unit...it doesn't have much exposure from the outside and guys from HR are never seen there....

Surgeons are money making cows so management have their eyes wide closed when things like that happen. There is one surgeon who is exceptional SOB got fired a tech who told him to cool down when he vocalized his anger during a change of shift. That tech unscribed the nurse who was scrubed for 16 hours and the surgeon felt that she needs to finish transplant with him...............................................next day that dude (scrub tech) was fired...

The biggest thing they can do is to send abusive people to anger management classes....That doesn't work -(((((

your nervousness will easy as the experience will come....pursue your dream....even if it'll be different OR.

good luck
