CRNA Hates me

I am a new grad (graduated and got rn in july), but I worked on the floor as an LPN for a year. My love has been OR ever since I was about 6 years old. Now I have been working in Amb Surg since August and have recently started training in OR on days that AS case load isn't too full. Anywhooo, there is a CRNA who hates me. He says he does not want me in OR because I do not have enough experience and he tries to do his best to make me feel 6 inches tall whenever he gets the chance and is trying to "run" me off. I can handle strong personalities, (I used to be a prison guard), but this guy makes me so nervous I can not even think straight. Any suggestions on how to cope? I know I do not have a lot of experience as a nurse, but I want my career to revolve around surgery, so is he right that I should give up on OR for now or am I right in that now is the best time for me to learn OR?

No, and I think you should report his behavior. You shouldn't have to put up with that!!

On another note, I'm sure there are several that feel that way about me, but I WILL NOT LET THEM RUN ME OUT OF THERE!!!! The OR is "MY" dream, just as it may have been theirs.

Stand your ground, prove your ability. It may take time, but you'll get there! :)

That is ridiculous!! I'd be going directly to my nurse manager about that behavior. It sounds like he's trying to push you until he can get you to push back. If you decide to stand up to him take the high road and do it respectfully. It will make him look like more of an a$$ than he already does.

I am very new to this forum, but I'm very sure there is a policy or process that prevents or deals with this type of behaviour. We in Australia would not tolerate any type of verbal abuse and given how this person makes you feel, human resources need to deal with it. Have you considered talking with this person? If you have the next step should be a formalcomplaint in writing to superior staff. It shold be acted on or at least a meeting will result with a mediator. We have a global shortage of nurses in general, not to mention perioperative nurses! We need to nurture those who aspire to join our ranks! Hang in there!

Looks like the anesthesia nurse thinks he's a physician. It's a shame considering most CRNA's are friendly.

The majority of CRNAs I know are very friendly and easy to get along with. Remember, they are nurses to and are not above you in any way. This is my opinion and only my opinion, CRNAs in general have never really practice nursing to a degree because most go straight out of nursing school right into anesthesia school. Most have only had real contact with patients in nsg school and had to take care of them as their nurse. Their ultimate goal right from the beginning of nsg school was to be an CRNA and nothing more. I look at CRNAs completely diferent than anesthesiologists because I am on an equal level with the CRNA. Most CRNAs I have worked with were great and knew their job extremely well. Your's has a problem, he can't remember what level he is on. Do your best and forget his surly attitude. Like one person said, stand your ground and show him you are better than him.

I think one year of critical care nursing experience is required before entering CRNA school.

Sorry, but I disagree...you are not on the same level as a CRNA. Yes they are nurses, but I beleive (am not 100% sure) that they first need a BSN. And I know that they need at least 1 year, usually more, in a CCU. They have to have experience with critically ill patients, usually cardiac, and cannot go right into CRNA school. And CRNA school is very difficult. Check out the CRNA forum on this website, I think you might have a better appreciation of what they do. Not every nurse could do it. The man's attitude is another subject though...no one should be treated the way he is treated the OP.

come on people! We are all nurses in the beginning and I am NOT going to let any CRNA run my life and the way I do my business in the OR. Too many CRNAs put themselves above others and think themselves the better person. My hats off to them if they want the extra responsibilities and they should be well compensated for it. I already probably match a lot of them in salary and that is without the added stress. Luckily I don't have to work with too many of them, but the ones I do work with are outstanding. They could put me to sleep anytime and I can't say that about too many anesthesiologists.

Also I noticed most the posters have little or no OR experience and was wondering if this is where they get their inside knowledge?

So you make over $100,000 a year as an OR nurse? Because that is what a CRNA makes. I know that from doing research on CRNA's (on this site and others) and from personally knowing a CRNA.
