Hi, just curious, for those of you in Michigan, do you know of hospitals that run a credit check on you prior to employment? This is quite a while away for me, just curiuos though because my credit isn't very good....

I think this is different from company to company. I know more and more places are using this to weed out people.
i really dont think that is fair when i know many people are not able to work while in nursing school and in fact most of our instructors told us not to work while in school; if they do run a credit check they should let people know.

I do not know about that state specifically.
But as a traveler, I can tell you that the vast majority of hospitals that I have worked for do credit checks on employees.

angela,
just playing the "devil's advocate" here. just because you are not working doesn't mean it is acceptable to have bad credit. unfortunately, "life" isn't fair. just my $0.02.
best,

No one is saying it is acceptable to have bad credit. I just think its difficult...a lot of times people have bad credit because they don't have enough money to pay their bills. That is why they are looking to get a job to pay off debt. That's all i'm saying. Ofcourse it's my own fault for having debt in the first place. If it is difficult to get a job because of the debt...it's just a catch 22.

Most employers will do a credit check as part of the application process. However, the current economy has negatively impacted such large numbers of people across the nation, so the stigma of a shaky credit report may not be as severe as it was in the past.
It's even possible that any negative information acquired during this recession/depression will hold less importance than the info before and after.

I've worked at Beaumont and HFH and I've not had my credit checked....that I know of. Anyhow, I worked through nursing school, part time, every weekend. I know someone who had two jobs and worked through nursing school so having one job can't be that bad.
some people can work others can't; i feel i had a much easier time not working through nursing school. i went to hfcc and it's a pretty tough program. if you could work im happy for you. i did what was best for me and i finished and passed nclex and didn't fail once. as for the credit thing; i'm not a criminal for having bad credit. i do my best to pay bills as soon as i have the money to pay them, and i know i'm not the only one out there in this crazy economy with bad credit. i don't think credit should have any say on how i will be as a nurse.

you are preaching to the choir. i'm an hfcc grad. i know how tough that program is. my credit is probably as bad as your's. i recently filed bankruptcy so i'm sure mine is down the drain. oh well, live and learn, that is life. having bad credit is not a sin or a crime, it happens.
