Hi, just curious, for those of you in Michigan, do you know of hospitals that run a credit check on you prior to employment? This is quite a while away for me, just curiuos though because my credit isn't very good....
I will never get a job lol.....that being said the current economy is killing my credit. We were a one income family and dh got laid off. We have NO credit card debt but are struggling to pay bills because of him lossing his job, now I am going to be punished for that? I mean I am trying to better my family and now I have to worry about them checking my credit. How would my credit tell what kind of nurse I was or if I had the qualifcations for the job?
gentle tos reminder:
while it is important to be able to network, everyone should be mindful of the following:
- it is a small world - when we narrow it down to a state and throw in some personal info, there is actually a pretty good chance someone may recognize you if you are not careful. your privacy is paramount to us.
- while allnurses.com is a wonderful place to vent (without excess personally identifiable details) it is not the place to express why ("x" specific person, place or program) is terrible. gripe away, but since we cannot permit allegations to be made about named entities, your care in not naming them is very much appreciated.
- please do not give out personal information about others. do not name names where anyone could identify the person in any facility including your nursing programs.
some people can work others can't; i feel i had a much easier time not working through nursing school. i went to hfcc and it's a pretty tough program. if you could work im happy for you. i did what was best for me and i finished and passed nclex and didn't fail once.
i don't think credit should have any say on how i will be as a nurse.

some of us had no choice and had to work - there was no other option. and i also never failed the nclex.
you do not have to "think that credit should have any say" on how good an employee you will be. it is not up to you, as you are not hiring "you". it is the employer that makes the decision, and they do the hiring and firing so they can use any legal criteria that they wish. and unfortunately many of them have found that employees that have better credit ratings work out better than those that do not.
i can also tell you, having worked in hr - people with credit problems tended to have poorer track records and cause more hr headaches.
i know great nurses with poor credit ratings and some with excellent credit ratings that are mediocre.....it does not matter - the employer makes the rules has to how the screen you. and i have only seen a few cases of poor credit keeping a nurse from a job....generally over the top bankruptcy, repeated bounced checks, child support issues. i know plenty with minor/moderate credt issues still be able to get jobs.

by the time i got past those classes i really started applying for jobs, but unfortunately no one was really hireing, and then i found out during ob i was pregnant, and that was extremely hard for me; thank god i got through it! i probably wont looking for jobs until after i have the baby which is hopefully very soon.
