Crazy Tampon Commercial

Published

Has anyone seen the new Tampax commercial where it tells women to "use your period for good"? :uhoh3: If you buy Tampax they will provide young girls in Africa with sanitary products and help them go to school.

Where to these marketers come up with these crazy slogans? I thought the Benefiber commercial where it suggests that drinking fiber is sexy was crazy, but this one is a step beyond that.

They could have at least said if you buy Tampax we will donate xxxx amt of money to provide young African girls sanitary products so they can go to school.

Are the condom companies going to provide free condoms and education to males if we buy their brand of condom? After all, a man can be good for change.

It is my understanding that a number of organizations are working worldwide to distribute condoms and encourage their use, but there are numerous cultural roadblocks associated with that goal. I have no idea whether condom manufacturers actually contribute, though.

However, I don't think condom use is an apt comparison here. Lack of condoms isn't keeping boys or men from going about their lives (ironically, it is women that are most impacted by a lack of condoms, since they bear and raise the resulting children and are just as likely as men to contract the diseases that could've been prevented). Both causes are good, but we're talking apples and orange.

I think it's a really bad idea. Once the girls get the tampons and pad, where will they dispose of them?

I'm thinking about this because about 20 or so years ago there was brand of disposable diapers who sent diapers to a third world country for every box of diapers you bought. The country in question wound up with huge mounds of used diapers everywhere with no way to dispose of them. They don't have the same sanitation systems we do here; no regular trash pick up. When I heard this commercial I envision mounds of used pads and tampons lying around and......well.......ewwww!

Addendum: As an alternative, I think menstrual cups would be a better idea. Something like The Keeper or Diva.

Doesn't this remind you of the "Growing Up and Liking It" and "Very Personally Yours" menstuation booklets of the 1950s-1970s from Modess and Kotex? Brainwashing girls into thinking it was going to be so cool to be grown up? Er, I mean pointing to all the positive sides of being mature, lol.

Enjoyed the letter!

Yes it does!

Oh, good Lord, there's something I could've gone forever without remembering! I do recall those booklets! "Liking it" my fat Aunt Fanny. Thirty years of my life consumed with this miserable blessed event. Egads.

I don't know what their trash options are but I think the divacup is a far worse idea for young school girls. :uhoh3: Unsanitary at best in an unsanitary enviroment. Although Tampax/Always has this campaign they are talking about napkins not tampax for these young school girls.

I hear you!

Every month that goes by and I still haven't hit menopause, I'm so bummed.

People keep telling me "no, you don't want menopause." I say "Oh yes, honey, yes I definitely want menopause."

I have a friend who tells me the truth. She says "I LOOOOOVE menopause! I'm so much happier now. It's awesome."

*sigh*

I always buy the generic feminine products (budgeting). I wonder why Tampax/Always can't just donate sanitary products to the young ladies? They can always do a tax write off.

I bet it is that they want people to buy their products. they figure that if someone thinks that they are doing good if they buy this particular product that it will do good and they will feel good. Thus they will buy it.

I would bet the bank on it. The selfish company spends their money advertising to pull our heart strings and quilt us into buying their product. I think I'll change from Always to Kotex. Now, that wouldn't help the young girls so I suppose I'll stay quilt ridden and buy their products for awhile longer.

Why can't they just spend those big bucks to send the products over and then have a short commercial with just the words. "No advertising for now ~ our money/product has been sent to Africa to help the young girls so that they can attend school while on their periods".

Excellent idea, and that they come up with a green way to dispose said products. Call Oprah?

Considering the number of vulgar, tasteless, and/or obscene things I've seen on tee-shirts, I would not be the least surprised to run into that one.

The ads struck me as a little bizarre. And I do think they could've donated a lot of products for what the ads cost to produce and air.

I don't use that particular product anyway, it never worked well for me.

I thought the commercial was funny.. but then I wasn't so sure about the concept. It may be culturally inappropriate, depending on where in Africa they are sending these Tampons. Virginity is very important in these cultures, and they determine that by the presence of a hymen--- women avoid athletic activity for this reason! It can be life threatening if they don't have an intact hymen when they get married. Also, with the occurance of Female Genital Mutilation I wonder if the women can even utilize them. There are also many cultural and religous attitudes about mensturation that should probably be considered on a regional basis.I don't trust they have done their investigatory work.

---- Sort of reminds me of the Nestle project in the 1970's... When thousands of containers of formula were distributed to women throughout Africa-- African's, thinking that Westernized products are better, utilized these products with out the knowledge that their breast milk will dry up over time... when the formula ran out, children starved due to the food scarcity. Trying to do good, but hurting the people in the long run.

:chuckle:chuckle:chuckle:chuckle This all reminds me of the recent "Have a Happy Period" commercials for pads. (can't remember which brand)
