I work in the OR. One day we were doing a routine Ureteroscopy in Cysto, and the Surgeon was having problems removing this huge stone. He throws one basket in and it gets stuck. So he puts another basket up to try and get the 1st basket and the stone that it is stuck around, out. He pulls and pulls. About a minute later the pt's URETER detached and came out of her URETHRA!! You could seriously hear a pin drop as the surgeon just stared for about 2 minutes...It was unbelieveable! (Pt lost their kidney about 2 hours later, after an unsuccessful open ureteral reimplantation!)

She didn't call for help or anything?, how unusual, wish I can have a baby so effortlessly, this story is unbelievable!, really

I would never have believed it if I wasn't there. We'd certainly have ladies with precipitous labors, but you'd always hear them screaming down the hall. She was rather obese and young (18-19). She looked a little shell-shocked. As did her friend.

I'm an agency nurse now, but when I was a staff nurse we had this odd agency nurse come in one night. She was having trouble getting a GT feeding pump to run, so she called another nurse up from a different floor to help. Well the other nurse decided that the bag was probably flawed, so she got a new one and decided to use the feeding that was in the flawed bag, so it wouldn't go to waste. She opened it up and inside were the patients meds. She goes, "....um....did you put his meds INSIDE the feeding bag???" The odd nurse goes, "I can't remember." Which of course means yes. I just don't understand why she would do that. How can anyone not know? I would say she did it out of laziness, but I don't think she would have been so quick to call another nurse up to help her with the pump, if that had been the case. Who knows.

I had another patient who accidently killed herself, as sad as that is. This was in a nursing home, but I think she really belonged on a psych floor. She was a very heavy lady, in her 60's, with a trach. VERY very demanding. If you wouldn't do things right when she wanted them, she would throw things all over the place and scream. Anyway, she always wanted trach care way more than needed. Her trach was always very clean, but she wanted trach care constantly, and would have a fit if you couldn't drop everything to come do it. Well one day she was having a fit because the daylight nurse couldn't drop everything to come immediately do trach care, so she decided to yank her whole trach out. The nurse had trouble getting it back in and on her way to the hospital the paramedics were finally able to get in it. The struggle caused some swelling around the trach, but she was sent back to the nursing home later that night. So the next day the same thing happened all over again. The daylight nurse couldn't get into the room immediately so she yanked the trach out again. Well the swelling that was caused from the day before totally shut the opening immediately, and she didn't come back from that one. How scary to die over something like that. I don't know if she just didn't care, or if she really thought she wouldn't die from it, and that it would "show" the nurse so to speak.
