CPNE Questions Going to Grady in Atlanta in 2 weeks!

Do you know that you can schedule a phone call with EC for free once a week every week you became eligible for CPNE and every day on a testing week? I used that for getting all my silly questions answered :)

i took the cpne dec 2008 so take some of this with a grain of salt.

1- can i carry my own hand gel in my pocket?? no. use the hospitals sanitizer.

2- should i wear gloves for the skin assessment? i mean what if they are sweaty, thats a body fluid no? only use gloves if there is an open area or possible contamination.(ie. if your are assigned the buttocks, i would use gloves when assessing)

3- if i am assigned teaching, and i say "is this a good time to talk about ______?" and the patient says no! what do i do? i doubt they would say that. they know you are there to do the pcs. if they do, then ask them when would be a good time? if it is nearing the end of the pcs i would move on to my next assessment and ask again. if they still refuse, all you can do is document in the teaching section. you can't make them accept the teaching. in essence. they are not gonna refuse. they know that what your doing a test so they will cooperate.

4- i speak spanish. if my patient does too, can i talk to them in spanish??? has anyone ever been assigned a non-english speaking patient? i doubt they will give you a spanish speaking patient but i would speak english because you want to verbalize everything you do to the ce. they are the ones that count.

5- do we carry the mar into the patient room when giving the medications? where does it come from? do we just take it from the nurses? yesssss bring to the room! you have to compare the mar to their armband. you will fail if you don't do this before giving medication. it will probably be a paper mar. ask the ce where the mar is.

6- abdominal assessment. ist p = pee. what if the do have to pee? moving them a lot back and forth then back to bed will move all the things you want to listen too no? if i help them go pee first, should i wait a while before doing the assessment? pray that they don't have to pee! if they do, let them go to the bathroom via urinal, bedpan or ambulating to bathroom and finish doing the assessment. you can check mobility if they have to go. this can knock out two birds with one stone.

7- ivp med station: is there a clamp on the iv port to close after your 2nd flush? i am almost 100% positive there is.

8- im/sq injectable medication station: does the ce want to see the amount of air before i put it in?? i would show and verbalize everything to them. bring everything to their attention.

Most of the questions you have will be answered during the orientation for the CPNE but here we go.

Hand gel- Grady policy is you must foam every time you enter or leave a patients room, but for the PCS you must was your hands as stated in the study guide, your CE will let you know of any changes in that policy. So WASH YOUR HANDS, until CE tells you different.

Wearing gloves while you are doing a skin assessment, it doesn't hurt. I was assigned two skin assessments and both included the butt, so it didn't hurt my feelings putting on a pair of gloves.

Patient teaching, you must remember a couple of things about the PCS the patient is always right, and the patient knows you are a student, explain to the patient that you were assigned patient teaching and if they don't mind you have to teach them about their meds or what ever usually the patient will comply.

Spanish I wouldn't worry about it, the CA will ensure that the patients you are assigned to speak English of some form. I would not speak Spanish to a patient unless the CE speaks Spanish also, you are being graded or everything you do and say.

MAR At Grady the charts are in a document locker just outside the patients room, your CE should collect the patients meds from the primary nurse, bring them to the room along with the MAR then you take it from there. At Grady you can sign and initial the MAR before you give the meds, then if for some reason you can't give it you just cross it off, that will be explained during orientation, if the tell you it is allowed DO IT

If your patient has to pee so be it. You really have more then enough time to take care of everything you need to do, that and you don't want to fail for emotional jeopardy.

I don't remember a clamp on the IV push station, if there was on I didn't clamp it off and I passed

On the IM/Subq you only have to show the CE the amount you draw out.

I hope this helps you out some, on my 2/1 patient I was sitting in the break room in my planning phase a staff nurse came in and said she had done her CPNE a year ago, relax do your grid and you'll do fine.

My advice would have to be, relax as soon as you can, HAVE FUN

Fluid Management I can't seem to get it. Even with the mnemonic WIG GAS REAR. I feel that there are several critical elements that are missed. Any suggestions? I am testing in Queens on 12/02/11

What does your mnemonic stand for? I'm not even using one.

I'm testing under the 17th ed and I plan to use the PCS Recording Form Fluid management page for fluid mgmnt. Pretty much everything is on there, except maybe encourage fluids (which will be marked on the kardex). I'll have a spot on my grid for for that one. I'll highlight on the form what I'm responsible for (especially for 20 minute checks). If you have to change an IV bag that'll be mnemonics from sims lab. If I have to check patency of an intermittent venous access that'll be on the kardex and I'll make a spot on my grid for it.

Have you considered a workshop?

Also to the (OP)......you may want to consider doing a workshop too. A lot of the study guide info was not clear to me until after I took a workshop. It then became very clear and gave me some direction as to how to plan my studies and how to setup my PCS and labs. I also was given great Mneumonics from the workshop ---for every area of care (AOC). And some can be used for both labs and PCS!!! just my:twocents:!
