Cooling Blanket for HIE

Does anyone use a blanketrol 3 for cooling for HIE? If so, do you use developmental aids for comfort?

No, we only use a single rolled blanket under the cooling blanket to move side to side. The mushy positional devices will create to many dips and valleys to let the water circulate freely.

Same here. One blanket over the cooling blanket once it's cold, nothing else. Only term babies qualify, so I don't worry so much about truly developmental positioning for the few days they're on it.

You guys put one blanket on it? Per manufacture recommendation the baby should lay directly on the blanket as it is disposable. Just curious if it is the same blanket all of us are using?

Yeah, I'd think the blanket over the cooling blanket would lessen the efficacy of the cooling.

We don't have any kind of blanket over the cooling blanket, but we do use bendy bumpers or something to give them some boundaries. We haven't had any trouble maintaining proper esophageal temps when using them.

I think they may be talking about eggcrates or zflos.

We use these and only use a rolled blanket under the blanketrol to turn them side to side. They should be adequately sedated for the three days they're on it anyways so developmental "comfort measures" aren't as pertinent

Yes, they are allowed only under the blanketrol, and then, loosely (not tightly securing the baby). Don't really see it used much, as these babies are older in gestational age; also they are sedated.

Our policy says that one flat hospital blanket is allowed, but I've never seen it used.

Interesting. We can use one under the head but only during rewarmimg. I'm surprised that is in your protocol.
