I have to write a paper for school and I am stumped for ideas. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head are euthanasia and abortion- not bad topics, but I am trying to come up with something a little more original than those.
So I figured you kind folks here at allnurses might have some ideas- just a topic is all I am looking for. I wll handle the research from there.... I have to pick a topic and write a "position" paper on it.
Thanks in advance,

Look for those threads with the most replies. There is some good ones in the OB/Gyn forum.
There is a brilliant one on speaking to brain dead patients over in the neuro forum - if has a wealth of links and really highlights how little is understood by some about the term "brain dead"

There's stem cell research. I did a paper about genetic engineering using the movie Gattacca as an example but so far as I know you can't genitcally engineer a baby yet but it's an idea. Well there's cloning too. And no I'm not into all that CSI stuff! Just the idea of engineering people genitcally what can happen if we do.

Pain management...is pain really what people say it is? Do people have the right to be pain free at any cost?

Hello, all
Here are several you might want to consider.....
Drug exchange programs
Euthanasia and hospice
Fetal cells to cure parkinson
Sterilization of IV Drug user (women)
Choosing living as a vegetable or choosing death
obesity in school age children should the parents be responsible or society
Cardiovascular children should they recieve heart transplant? or Should you consider a child for heart transplant when they chose to abuse their body?
Which one do you save A minority man with no insurance and need an emergency heart surgery or a nurse who saved your mother last week and need an emergency heart surgery?
Addicted nurse who is actively using or an unethical nurse who believes in over medicating patients during third shift -which one would you have as a coworker on second shift?
Hearing a patient ask a physician to kill them quicker by using a lethal dosage of medication and the physician agrees too.....do you tell or not?
Watching a coworker still narcotics from the needle box and shoot himself...do you tell or not?
Your child was hit by a car, needs a heart and a kidney...do you go on the black market for the organs or let nature takes it toll?

the terry schaivo case (don't know if i spelled that right) was a really big ethical delimma this past year. Lots of good threads to pull different views from, argue what PVS is and who has the right to say what happens....deep stuff

we had a big issue in our local news a bit back because a couple was ordered by a judge not to have any more children because they were drug users and couldn't care for the ones they have. Like forced sterilization but without surgery.
What about teenagers obtaining reproductive care/counseling without parent's knowledge?
I heard they just approved Plan B for OTC w/ teenagers, or they are going to approve it. The FDA has articles as does AAP.
These are some great ideas!! Thanks so much everyone. :) Please add to this thread if you think of anything else. I have a little while to choose a topic so any other ideas will be appreciated as well.

There is a recent case in Corpus Christi,Texas w/13yo child removed from home because parents refused to allow tx for Hodgkin's disease. Mother could visit w/supervision not father until recently. Might focus on ethics justice, automony, nonmalefience, benefience. I think the New York Times may have something on this.
