Nurses General Nursing

I am doing a presentation to a class of ADN students about nurses furthering their education. I would love feedback on how many nurses plan on continuing their education. If not, I would like to know why? Do you plan on being at the same job in 5 years, 10 years, and do you think furthering your education is worth it?

Hello Sunni LPN,

I am an associate degree LPN and I am currently going back into nursing after a 9 month hiatus.

I am starting a pysch position this month. If I like it, I plan on going on for my RN. I only have 3 semesters to get my Associate degree RN. Again, if I like this position I do plan on staying for the long term.

Specializes in Med/Surg and Wound Care, PACU.

I've been an LVN for 2 years, and I have accrued 38 credit hours worth of prerequisite classes at my local community college toward local LVN-to-RN bridge programs in my area. My goal is to earn the RN licensure, although I might attend an expensive trade school ADN fast-track program within the next year to meet my objective. Either way, I'm going to turn this goal into a reality!

I fell in love with the environment as a transportation aide in xray at a city hospital, I went back to school for med. receptioning, then became a CMA, proceeded to grad top in class with an associates in science LPN, and now have 96 credits towards my RN. I took the long road for situational expense reasons, but the craving of knowledge was and still there.;)

Planning (hopefully :)) to start an RN-BSN program this fall. And, although I'm not too keen on going back to school (I graduated last May), I expect I'll end up with at least a masters.

More education never hurts and it certainly gives you more options.

Specializes in CNA, Surgical, Pediatrics, SDS, ER.

Graduated w/ ADN in 06' and I have been thinking about getting my BSN, even though where I live ADN & BSN make the same amt hourly. I feel like I will have more opportunities in my future if I persue my BSN. It's definatly a goal of mine to complete my BSN. I have also thought about CRNA still deciding on where the rest of my nursing future lies.

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I'm really undecided. I planned when I started school to further my degree within a few years, but things have changed a lot in my life. I meet a wonderful man, and we are married, and I really do feel very secure in our marriage. So, now my long term goals are more family related. I don't want to give up my career, but I don't see if beleiving the main focus of my life.

I think I would any advance to a BSN if I were committed to going on to a master's level at least. To me, I don't see to many benefits of a BSN over an ASN in the area we live. Regular ol' RN's are still DON's and in management. Very few positions require BSN here, and this time. I would love to have wound care certification, and I would have to have a BSN for that.

I don't know...I am very undecided, as you can see. :thnkg:

I think in our job we are always learning, keeping up to date, learning from other staff, patients, new situations etc. I have just completed my ENs and am now starting my RNs. Later I'll do FLEC training ( for ED). Maybe do my masters, do some midi or psych.I donn't know but whatever comes up I'll be learning. Good luck with your presentation.

I graduated from my LPN program and went on immediately for my associates degree. I received my associates degree 27 years ago and have started 3 different BSN programs since. I am now in the process of enrolling in hopefully my last BSN program. I tried twice to go on for my BSN before the ease of online education but my schedules conflicted. I have been interested in a few jobs that I could not apply for without a BSN. I plan to be with the same company for the rest of my career and plan to get my BSN for further advancement.

Specializes in Community Health, Med-Surg, Home Health.

While I do not intend to become an RN, I do plan to expand my role to gain more work experience. I have taken several continuing education courses, including EKG and wound care. Plan to vary my per diem experiences so that I can pad my resume. I think that all nurses should expand on their knowledge and stay current with trends. What has happened for me since my collagues see my interest in learning new things is that they see me as a resource and come to me all the time with questions, even the senior nurses. I do not have their years of experiences, and count on them to teach me; but they also know that I use technology to obtain information that they are afraid of doing -such as using the computers, PDAs, etc... (many of my co-workers are not computer savvy)
