Hi I am a new grad LPN that moved from Florida to Virginia to live with my husband. I have been putting in applications from the time I got here which was in December 2010 to the present day. I have recieved 2 interviews and no calls from the rest. I have let other nurses look over my resume and they say that there is nothing wrong with it and I have practiced mock interviews to make sure that I make a good impression. But so far no luck my qualifications didnt meet the companies need on one job and the other job didnt even call me back. I'm just tired of being out of a job and feeling like a bum. I joined this career because I love helping ppl and know there are a huge demand for nurses. But where is the huge demand? I feel some of the companies are wrong for not even letting you know if you are considered or not. All I get is a if we you are considered for the position we will call you line. Shaking my head.....I am about done with this game I feel like a fool wasting all that time and money I have to pay back in school loans:jester::jester: I just feel so discouraged right now and have no other ideas. I'm tired of calling and going to facilities and practically begging for a job. If they needed someone so badly for a position then why have it opened for months on end???? I dont get it you have ppl coming to you for this position, at least hire someone qualified for the position and put the rest of us out of our misery!!!! Sorry if I have depressed you but thats how I feel now :crying2: This nurse is going to blow out her nurses candle and take off her nurses hat. This career is obviously not where its at for me......

How new of a grad are you? If you have NO experience, have you considered corrections it's not for everyone but they are usually hiring. Have you tried a "Tech" job (basically a cna at a hospital) position? The pay is less but it gets your foot in the door. How about a doctor's office? Facility nursing is the best place to get started because of the rigorous rules and variety of patients, so I think you are looking in the right places. Don't forget to look on SimplyHired, Indeed, and go ahead and Cold Call ALF's and LTC's.
There are SO many possibilities for we nurses PLEASE try to stick it out! Once you get started, you will love nursing and nursing will love you. I cannot think of ANY OTHER career that I would or could replace with nursing.
Good luck!

Try to make yourself stand out. Send thank you cards after interviews. Take extra training classes. Get your IV certification. It took me over 8 months to finally get my first RN job and it was 130 mile from home. Jobs are out there, it just takes time.
Thanks for all the encouragement and I will try sending a Thank You card. I am just going to keep praying to God. Darlink if you can wait 8 months and drive 130 miles to go to work then I can wait this storm out a little longer. Please pray for me and these school loan bills.
You can defer the student loans usually for hardship. Check with your student loan company.

hang in there, it's hard at first, work with patients as a caregiver or an assistant.
It's looking like I will have to take a job as a caregiver.

I am sorry you have to go through this. time has changed. Nursing is not what it used to be. I know the feeling. I lost my LVN job when i became an RN and could not find a Job. Ironic!!!!!I look for six months and had to move out of states. You will be in my prayers. do not give up. Try some nursing Home Or LTC. Good luck

there is no huge demand for nurses at the present time because nursing is not a recession-proof job. please don't be fooled into believing the myths about the so-called 'nursing shortage.' when the economy tanked two or three years ago, the nursing job market became tougher and more competitive in many regions across the u.s.

I'm considering leaving nursing too. There are a few jobs out there, but it seems you have to have the right connections or just get lucky to land a full-time position even in ltc. I'm finding that most places are starting to hire multiple part-time people rather than hire one full-time person so they don't have to provide benefits and occasional overtime. Its a sad state this country is in right now. Nursing "should" be one of those jobs that are recession-proof with the aging and increasing population, but it just is not so. Most jobs are under-staffed and stressful and you have to worry about losing your job if you make a mistake with the at-will employers. I'm going to be paying back student loans for the next 18+ years for what? I can't even afford my bills right now and deferring them is'nt an option as they just add the interest on top of the balance and your payment goes up. I think I'm good at helping people, but you have to pay the bills in the meantime. Don't know what to do...

Curious about what your future plans are outside of nursing.
If you're referring to me, honestly I don't know. I've been applying for everything from grocery to auto parts store assistant managers and I may apply to any production job that may pay enough. What really has me interested right now though is a new company that came into the area that does IT stuff. They have a program at the local community college for computer programming that they hire from if you pass their interview and aptitude tests and pass the program. It will be a lot of work, but sounds like a very good place to get into. I have practically no knowledge of IT right now, but it sounds like it will soon be in all areas of life including health care. I'm pretty good with computers and something like this could'nt hurt, but then again my accounting degree went nowhere and now possibly nursing may be a dead end also.
